Heat Stroke

Seth Green walked down the sidewalk, reading a book. He never went anywhere without a book. Always had done things that way, always would.

He rubbed the back of his neck absently, as he trudged on. He hated walking. But, he had to if he ever wanted to make it to the high school dance in time.

Seth didn't want to go- but if he wanted to see that beautiful girl ever again he'd probably wind up seeing her there.

He just moved to the area a week ago, so he'd only seen her once, in the hallways. She was with some guy, and they seemed pretty close- so he didn't bother hitting on her.

Finally! He reached the school! Seth walked into the restroom, and looked at his reflection. His heart turned heavy in his chest. He looked like he always did.

Green eyes.

Black, unruly hair.

For the dance- white shirt, with a black tie worn loosely around his neck.

Nothing impressive.

At all.

He walked out of the bathroom and went around two corners then entered the gymnasium- his thumb acting as a bookmark in the novel he was reading.

Seth walked to the bleachers and sat. His eyes scanned for that girl, but he didn't see her anywhere.

Which meant he had come to this stupid dance for no reason whatsoever.

Hooray.

He sighed to himself, and then cracked open his book again. He felt himself calm as the story drew him in- fabricating a whole other reality into black and white.

Once again his eyes scanned the crowd. False hope, maybe? Yes must be just false hope. Or desperate hope.

But then he saw her. He didn't even know her name, but he should find that out tonight. He would find out tonight.

Seth's lips curled into a grin, as she walked gracefully. She had on a black skirt, and a red t-shirt. She had combat boots laced tightly around her calves, and her long, wavy, and unruly hair was confined by a braid that rested on her shoulder.

She sat down, and pulled something out of the satchel she wore on her other shoulder when she came in.

It was a book! She was sitting all the way on the other side of the gym- sitting in the bleachers and reading a novel!

Seth felt his heart quicken at the sight.

He looked down at his arm and saw the familiar Chi-Rho tattoo he drew on every morning in sharpie. She probably would be against that...

Seth clawed at his sleeve to lower it over the fake tattoo. It didn't cover it all the way.

Bummer.

Seth exhaled, and ran a hand through his black hair that stuck up slightly in the front.

All the gel in the world wouldn't be able to keep it down. No gel  was required to keep it up, either. That just happened naturally.

How God made him.

He shouldn't complain.

Her dark eyes darted up from the page that had arrested all of her attention beforehand.

His heart ceased in his chest the moment she looked up.

Was she looking at him?

No. That was insane.

A smile took form on her lips, and her face softened.

Seth felt  his own lips twitch into a smile in response.

He knew eye contact had not yet been made because Seth hadn't felt his soul catch on fire. Which is what would undoubtedly happen if he ever had the privilege of holding her eyes in his own.

Maybe...maybe she was looking at him!

His spine tingled at the notion.

He bit his bottom lip, and offered her a small nod of salutation.

She didn't give him a reply of any kind. And now Seth noticed to people were walking towards her.

That same guy from the other day, and another girl.

Seth gritted his teeth.

"Man, how pretty is she?" another new kid said behind him.

Seth squirmed in his seat, and looked to see none other than Caleb- who arrived at the school three days before Seth. This was Seth's third school in a matter of six months...he got expelled from the other two.

A fire sparked behind his eyes, igniting passion on his tongue.

"I was about to go and talk to her."

"So was I. Hey check it out-" Caleb said, displaying his sketchbook to Seth.

He drew the girl. Exactly how she was- sitting, cupping her face with her hands, bent over reading peacefully.

Seth blinked, thinking of how untalented he was in comparison.

And unattractive.

Caleb was your typical blond-harried blued-eyed heart throb. He seemed sensitive, humble, honest and understanding.

What was Seth, then?

What did that make him?

A black-harried, green-eyed introvert who had his nose in a book constantly who also had a lot of anger issues due to the fact he bottled up every ounce of anger every second of his life.

He shook his head, and went back to his book.

"What're you reading?" Caleb sounded monotone.

Seth didn't exactly feel like speaking, so he just closed his book and lifted it up so Caleb could read the cover himself.

"Pride and Prejudice??" Caleb asked followed by a round of dry chuckles.

"Yes," Seth breathed in reply.

"That's a girls book."

Seth calmed his ragged breathing, and slammed the hard back book closed.

He twisted int the bleachers to look Caleb in the eye.

"Do you have some kind of problem with me?" he didn't bother keeping his sarcasm in check. Didn't matter, anyway. At least not with the clown he was talking to.

"Welp, see ya!" he said, standing up and taking a few steps towards the stairs.

Seth shot up from his seat- novel hitting the ground off of his lap. "Woah, where are you going?"

"To go talk to her!"

"You can't! I was going to talk to her!"

"Man, what is your deal?" Caleb asked, making a face.

"My deal?! You've done nothing but get on me the whole time I've been here!"

Before Seth even knew what was happening, Caleb punched him right in the eye.

"Hey!!" a voice erupted across the gum and both of them looked up.

Well, no doubt about it now- the girl was definitely looking at both of them.

The entire school was!

"No roughhousing! Get out!" the principle yelled over the microphone. His voice echoed across for everyone to hear and see what a big idiot Seth was. "Both of you! You are suspended!"

Seth's eyes darted over to the girl, and she was looking in their direction. She offered a small frown, and then just looked back down the her book.

Seth turned to leave, and Caleb followed.

Seth stopped cold in front of the door and saw that it was pouring down rain.

Thunder clapped.

Lightning lashed the night skies.

Seth felt his cheeks quiver in rage. "Thanks a lot," he muttered through clenched teeth.

He pushed the door open, and cool wind rushed to meet him and it ran through his hair.

Long walk home.

Well, long walk to the place he was staying. Seth had no home.

Seth walked, keeping the classic novel under his shirt hopefully protecting it from the buckets of water that dumped desperately from the dark clouds.

He began to run, very rapidly getting soaked from head to toe.

Wet socks.

He shivered.

The faster he ran, he slipped more and more on the sidewalks. His shoe caught on a crack in the curb.

Seth hit the ground and slid. On the initial hit, he heard a crack. No, two cracks.

White hot pain coursed through his body and his heart thumped loudly in his ears.

His arm.

It was broken.

His wrist.

Most likely also broken.

The heat the pain ensued was almost unbearable. He would pass out if things got too much worse.

Seth yelled for someone- ANYONE to hear him and come to help. No reply came.

He laid on his stomach and moaned. Seth let his forehead hit the sidewalk- face down after letting out his last desperate groan; willing for relief to come- or death to take him.

A loud boom cam and he jumped.

Seth struggled to lift his head, but when he did, a light met him. He blinked and felt the rain running off his nose and onto his busted lip. The cool liquid felt like heaven on it.

He fought the screaming pain and turned on his side. Pain shot through his body and he yelped.

Four lightning bolts met above him, and swelled while spinning like a cyclone.

Seth gasped, because this was something he'd never seen before.

He was definitely not liking the look of this. "God, please!" he cried out, although it came out as more of a long moan of agony.

Something struck his body, jolting it to life.

But then everything turned black. Faded away.

"Hey, Hey- wake up! Kid, wake up!" a woman's voice called out, slapping his bruised cheeks lightly.

Seth's eyes flickered open, and he grunted.

He moved and pain flashed through his body so he stopped.

"Oh yeah, you're arm  is really broken. Wrist, too!"

"I can tell!" Seth yelled, voice hoarse. He groaned and rubbed his eyes. "Where am I exactly?"

"Well, that's complicated.

"It's okay lady. I'm pretty sharp."

"Well, first thing's first: look at your left forearm."

"I can't. It's kinda shattered."

The lady took his arm, and turned it over.

He began to curse, but then caught himself and whispered, "Sorry Lord. Trying to get better." he looked back at the woman who seemed impatient about something. "What is wrong with you- are you insane?!"

"Just look at your arm and buck up, kid."

Seth bit hard on his bottom lip, and looked at his arm. Some wacked out tattoo of a lightning bolt was etched into his skin!

"Cool! You gave me a tatt!"

"It's not exactly a tattoo."

"Seth's eye began to throb. "Ahh! My eye hurts."

"That's because it's black and puffy and gross."

"Nice," he replied, voice dripping with sarcasm.

"Here," she started. "Have a raw steak. Put that on your eye."

He looked at her skeptically. "This will help?"

"Duh!" a guy that was leaning on the wall said. "It's in all the movies so it's gotta be true!" he finished with a stupid grin.

"Worth a shot." Seth shrugged and pressed the meat against his eye.  "So uh, where am I again? And what's with this tatt?"

"Well, we have it too," she replied, as they both lifted their sleeves.

They did indeed have the same mark that he did.

"Okay, why am I here?"

"Because you've been chosen!" the guy said, seeming like he'd burst from excitement.

"Where am I??"

They exchanged a knowing glance, and the guy had a sick grin painted on his face. The woman took a step towards him and smiled warmly. "The future."

He dropped the steak.
