Chapter 4
Even Amber could tell something was off that night. Her mind drifted off from the situation at hand once again. Amber was usually quite down to earth, but today her mind kept wandering off into the wind, probing at a floating feeling, carrying her thoughts away.
Of course it didn't help that Noah was standing right next to her, in all his glory and hotness. Amber was always day-dreaming about his messy black hair and dark blue eyes.
She felt a little twinge of jealousy as she watched Noah calm Mina down, Oliver still fuming next to her. She knew full well that Mina had a crush on Noah, but that didn't stop her from liking the guy as well. Amber just tried her best to keep her feelings hidden.
Oliver's sigh brought Amber back again.
“Are you going to ask one of them to dance already Mendez? Don't hang around like you're actually a friend if you're not,” he snapped. This time Amber spoke up as well. This guy never learned.
“Oliver!” she scolded him. “There's no need to be rude!”
Oliver looked away. His cheeks were red and he looked fed up. Amber understood that they were all tense and worried, but she couldn't really sympathize with why Oliver hated Noah.
All in all, Noah was a sweetheart, who would do anything for his friends. Amber couldn't really picture Oliver doing that.
Noah coughed into his fist. “Yeah, um,” he hesitated. As if any girl would ever refuse a direct offer to dance with Noah Mendez. The thought was basically impossible with the girls who knew Noah.
“Um, well. Uh, Mina would you like to dance?”
Amber's mouth dropped open as Noah chuckled sheepishly at the shocked look on Mina's face. Amber hoped desperately that Mina would reject him. Her wishes turned out to be unsuccessful, which was to be expected.
Mina blushed and took Noah's hand, stuttering madly. In the end, she decided to just nod. Amber looked on as the Noah led Mina to the dance floor, smiling and laughing. A part of her broke, her heart tearing her inside-out.
Oliver watched her sympathetically, noting her feelings but obviously not sure what to do. Amber tried hard to hold in her tears, turning away.
“I need some air,” she mumbled. “I'll be outside in the garden if you need me.”
Thankfully, Oliver took her hint and left her be. Amber slipped through the doors, holding her breath so she wouldn't cry. When she finally got outside, she tossed her high-heels aside, running towards the back garden.
She'd seen a few Earth Users there sometimes, but she was careful to never let them see her.
This time, she let all thoughts of being careful flee from her mind, tossing the art of being cautious to the wind.
Amber plopped down on the ground. She didn't care if her dress was messed up, she just let herself cry.
It wasn't just about Noah anymore. All the stress and hurt crashed down on her, blocking out everything.
The sound of her sobs drowned out the light cackling from the bushes. The shadows and trees shifted, creating figures in the dark.
As the drama swelled around, the plan was set out from the sidelines.
