Chapter 20

Noah had arrived too late.

After all his work, he had come in just to see Karen jumping in front of Oliver to intercept the attack that was being directed towards him.

Noah slashed and hacked with all his might, letting all his anger, frustration and sadness out. Marcus was quick on his feet, bouncing around as he randomly swung at Noah.

Noah gasped for breath. He wasn't as fast as his opponent, and he also had to watch out for Marcus' lightning blasts coming from the air. Noah had quickly figured out there was absolutely no pattern to Marcus' lightning and his sword.

He gasped as he tumbled to the ground, breathing hard. Noah had almost no fight left in him and there was no water around to use to his Element advantage.

Water.

Noah's eyes widened as a wild idea flew into his head. It probably wouldn't work, but it was his best try.

Noah glanced up at the dark clouds over his head. He had little time, as Marcus was coming towards him fast. He stood up, closing his eyes and trying to remember the feel of cool water on a summer day. He tried to gather every thought of his adoration of water into his head.

A tugging sensation pulled in his stomach, as a huge rush of water came falling down on top of Marcus. Noah channelled all his emotions into the rain, hoping to turn it to acid.

Marcus screamed, letting Noah know of his success. This was the first time he had used his powers to such extent. Noah's insides felt like they were being mixed in a blender. His stomach churned and he struggled to keep the rain focused on Marcus.

Marcus' shriek cut off just as Noah lost control of his downpour. He thought for a moment he had beaten his enemy, but when he looked up, swaying on his feet, he saw a burned and scarred Marcus pinned down by Oliver.

“I'll kill you,” Oliver snarled. Marcus coughed up some blood, unable to speak. Noah could tell he was already dying fast. Amber called out behind him.

“Oliver! Leave him! That's enough!”

Oliver ignored her, raising his sharp sword into the air. Noah looked away as the dim light of the upcoming dawn flashed off his blade. He watched Amber's terrified expression as Oliver brought his weapon down, the thump telling Noah that Marcus was finally dead.

Amber pushed past him, running to Oliver. Noah stared up at the clouds as the rain started dripping from the sky. He wasn't sure if it was his doing, but he was glad for it.

When he turned back, he wasn't very shocked to see Oliver crouching in the soggy ground, the wind swirling around him furiously. Somehow, Amber had made it through that storm and was kneeling in front of him. Noah looked on as Amber raised Oliver's chin, staring into his blank eyes. She leaned her forehead on his, both of them staying like that as Oliver's mini tornado faded slowly.

Noah turned back to Karen's lifeless body. He knew Oliver must have been heartbroken and he hoped Amber would be able to help.

“Noah,” Amber's call made him turn back. Her face was emotionless, cold as ice. He didn't know what he had done wrong, but Noah made a mental note to stay on Amber's good side.

“Why are you here?” she asked. “Aren't you supposed to be with Mina?”

Noah looked down at his feet. He felt guilty about leaving Mina, but it had to be done.

“We heard,” he started, not knowing how to explain his failure. “We overheard Marcus talking about his ambush, so Mina sent me to stop him.”

Amber and Oliver stared. Noah knew what was coming next.

“You knew he was targeting Karen? If you actually left Mina behind to help us, where were you ten minutes ago?” Oliver yelled. His voice cracked and Noah was certain he had never seen anyone so angry and sad at the same time.

Noah wanted to melt into his water and slip away forever. He was half sure he would melt if Oliver's glare got any more intense.

“I'm sorry,” he mumbled. “I tried, I swear.”

Oliver opened his mouth again, but Amber restrained him, careful not to touch his back.

“Oliver, calm down. Noah, come here.” she gestured for him to come over. Noah walked over, thinking she would heal him. He hadn't realized how many wounds he had up until now. Instead, she slapped him across the face.

“I'm not blaming you for Karen's death,” she murmured. “But it was stupid of you to leave Mina on her own.” she scolded him. Noah didn't respond, holding his stinging cheek.

“Now. I'm going to heal Oliver first since he has more injuries, so I think it would be best if you could give us some time, Noah.” Amber suggested. Noah nodded, all up for the idea.

He got up and walked over a little ways away. He could still hear them, but he pretended he couldn't. Noah decided to focus on something else. His thoughts immediately turned to Mina. He knew how he felt about her. He loved her.

She was one of the most important people in Noah's life. Mina had a short temper, but he knew how sweet and gentle she could be as well. Fire was the perfect element to describe her. Mina could be fiery and loud or warm and calming. After all, everyone had two sides. Most people didn't know Mina's gentle side, and Noah thought of it as a privilege that he did.

Noah knew he had to trust her to get them through this. She had to be their saviour. Noah knew she could do it.
