August 6th, 1995

"We're going to go hiking ok Rosemary?" I jumped with glee, happiness filling my 8 year old mind. I'm not like those type of kids who have phones or game systems. I actually have never played one before, I was always the kid who would play in the woods at night, the kid who believes in ghosts, the kid kid who loved adventure, and today mommy and daddy are going to take me up to the mountains for the first time. They said that I was old enough, it even filled them with tears, but mommy and daddy's mouth was down. I didn't understand it before, but now being 10 years old, I finally realized why I went hiking, to be left in the woods for the rest of my life.

August 8th, 1995

I really miss you mommy and daddy. I don't know why they left me here. It's been so lonely and scary without them. Especially in the dark, I hear things that aren't supposed to be in the woods. Like howls and twigs breaking. I always climb into a tree to the middle and cry. I don't like it here, I love nature, but I love mommy and daddy more. Every night I would cry and cry, when it rains, I have to find a little home.

I have my book bag with me. It has all of my memories like mommy and daddy, grandpa Joe and Aunt Sarah, even Baby, my first doggie. I miss them all so much. Every night I would hold a picture to my heart. Hoping that I would once see them again.

August 29th, 1995

It's been three weeks now, and I know what and what not to eat, I know what type of tree is good to sleep on and which is not, I can pet the nice animals that come to me to help me, they are my new friends, the doggies would bring me other animals, at first I would cry because they killed a bunny, but now I know how I can eat them, God has given me something that will help me survive.

August 30th, 1995

I know how to make a fire now mommy and daddy, the nice deer showed me how. The little snakes showed me paths to the river.

September 1st, 1995

I caught my first fish mommy and daddy, I bet if you were here, you'd be so proud of me. Thank you for giving me some spare clothing. Winter is coming and the deer have to sleep soon. The nice doggies help me keep warm too. Isn't that nice? It's just like Baby. I love each and everyone of them.

September 5th, 1995

I've been keeping track of the days mommy and daddy, it's almost my birthday! I'm going to be 9 years old, but you're not going to be here to wish me a Happy Birthday or give me cake and presents.

I also saw the duckies leave to find a warmer place to stay. Wouldn't it be nice to come back to you?

September 10th, 1995

It's my Birthday today mommy and daddy. The animals stayed with me the whole day and played with me. It's nice to have friends, and the doggies are very protective of me. They are my new family, but no one will replace you. Ever.

I named my new friend, her name is Lucy. She is one of the doggies that protect me at night. She treats me like I'm her own little puppy. Isn't that sweet?

November 20th, 1995

Mommy, daddy! Guess what? Lucy is going to have puppies soon! I get to help her take care of then too! It's going to be fun!

November 21st, 1995

I'm crying mommy and daddy, Lucy has been asleep for a long time now. Her puppies are crying and even the other doggies are too. I don't think that she'll wake up again.

November 23rd, 1995

Hi mommy and daddy, I buried Lucy so God can take care of her now. I still take care of the puppies and now they're getting even bigger! One of them look a lot like Lucy, so I named her Lilly.
