Chapter 50 | Bonus: 25 Years Later

The gentle August wind blew through her graying hair and Astrid inhaled deeply, filling her lungs with the pleasant smell of salty sea and summer.

Leaning her head against her husbands, she heard him chuckle softly and an arm wrapped around her, squeezing her.

Looking out over the beach, they watched their daughter and son playing with their kids.

After they had gotten married, Astrid had gotten pregnant again, - with a boy this time and they had decided to name him Destin. Watching them grow up had been amazing and anxiety filled at the same time.

Hiccup had tried treating Abigail like the little princess she was so she knew how a guy should treat her.

He had been devastated when she had come home crying one day, saying her boyfriend had hit her and broken up with her. Her fourteen year old heart hadn't deserved that and Hiccup had been so angry, he had actually went home to the boy's parents and lectured their boy in front of their eyes.

After that, for a straight week, he had taken her out for ice cream and watched her favorite movies with her.

When Astrid had told him that Abigail had started liking another boy at sixteen, he had been terrified that she'd get hurt again.

He had confronted her about it and they had talked well into the night before going to bed. At seventeen, she had brought said boy home to tell them they were together and Hiccup had eyed him for way too long, probably making the boy feel nervous.

Astrid had laughed later that evening, saying, "I can't believe you had the balls to pull him aside and tell him that any part of him that touched her without her consent would be chopped off," and he had only raised his arms, saying, "Well, I'm never letting anyone hurt her again. He's in trouble if he tries to do anything to her."

He had laughed at Astrid's expression when Destin had come home one day after school, acting all gooey. When she had confronted him about it, all he had said was, "I defended a girl from a bully in school and she kissed me...on the lips," poor blonde had almost fainted.

Destin had been a mommy's boy while Abigail had been a daddy's girl. Barely a year or two after that, - after his fifteenth birthday - he had brought home a girl, - just like Abigail had.

Hiccup had been shocked when he caught them making out in Destin's room, - when they had been supposed to do homework.

Destin had yelled at his dad for being caught and Hiccup had only stood there before pointing at him, saying, "Do not do anything stupid," only to get a, "Jesus Christ, I won't! You're worse than mom!" Before shutting the door in his face.

He had chuckled when he had heard the girl laugh and Destin groan audibly. Young love

It had been a causal day two weeks after Abby's twenty-first birthday, - Destin hadn't fully learned how to talk and called his big sister Abby so it stuck - when Abigail's boyfriend, Austin had rung on the door.

Hiccup had been super confused and said that she hadn't been home. Austin had nodded and said that he knew and that it was the reason for why he was there.

He wasn't sure he couldn't be more confused but then Austin said, "I've known Abby for five years now and she makes me incredibly happy. I was hoping you'd approve if I...ask for her hand in marriage?"

Hiccup had only looked at him before doing a double take, finally understanding. Austin had been nothing but faithful, patient and loving since becoming Abby's boyfriend and he knew she couldn't find anyone better.

He had taken Austin's hand and nodded. The young man in front of him had been so relieved that Hiccup had been afraid the red-head would start crying in front of him.

He'd lie of he said he didn't cry during the father-daughter dance, his daughter finally a grown up woman stepping into a new life.

It had reminded him so much of Astrid.

Not even two months after their daughters wedding, he had come home to Astrid pacing in the kitchen and he had been worried she had accidentally burned down something.

She had grabbed his shoulders and said, "I'm going grey!" And all he could do was laugh, - which had led to him getting a punch.

That night when they went to bed, Astrid had snuggled up to him and apologized for her outbreak before saying, "This made me realize you actually meant it. We're growing old together."

He had turned around and said, "Of course we are. Didn't we promise that when we got married?" And all she had said in reply was a, "Mmm," before kissing him.

Two days after that, Hiccup had surprised Astrid when he suddenly spoke up during dinner, saying, "Oh, did you know Destin is engaged?"

Astrid had dropped her fork and she had looked at her son sitting beside his girlfriend, - fiancé.

Hiccup had laughed when Destin had, - once again - yelled at him for saying it before he had the chance to.

After watching both of their children get married, move out and start a life with their significant others, life became boring.

Having to put down Stormfly before she turned 12 due to Lymphoma that had attacked her intestines had left everyone crying, especially Toothless who had been wailing each night at the loss of his partner.

Hiccup had broke down completely when he had taken Toothless for a regular vet checkup and gotten results that Toothless had developed dementia. The vet had suggested putting him down due to his old age but Hiccup didn't have to heart to do so.

Taking him home, heartbroken, they had kept him around for around a year before one day waking up to realized the feline had passed in his sleep. Vets confirmed he hadn't suffered and just...passed.

Burying him in their backyard right next to Stormfly, he swear he saw them playfully run around and enjoy the sun but maybe it was the tears in his eyes deceiving him.

When Astrid had told him that he saw the two cats napping at the end of the bed one day, he had cried with happiness, finding comfort in their two beloved feline friends coming back to visit them.

"-ccup? Hello? You there?" Her voice brought him out of his thoughts. Shaking his head, he looked down at her. "Huh? Yeah, of course," He said and pressed his lips against her grayish-golden hair.

She had aged so beautifully and when he thought she couldn't be more beautiful...she did.

"What were you thinking about?" She asked, her voice soft. He smiled and pulled back. "Just thinking about moments in our lives that I never want to forget," He confessed and observed her.

Astrid lifted her head from his shoulder. "Like what?" She asked and looked at her husband. "Abby, Destin, Toothless and Stormfly and..." he trailed off, looking over the beach and into the sunset before them.

"And...?"

"...You. Us," He confessed and turned his head towards her.

Astrid looked taken aback for a moment before her eyes softened and a smile appeared on her lips. "What about us?"

"We've made it so far," Was the only thing Hiccup said. "And we'll make it so much longer. If I managed to be with you for twenty-five years, I can manage twenty-five times two more," Astrid said, raising her hand to brush her fingers over his heavy stubble.

"Oh, wow. Thanks," He deadpanned. Astrid laughed softly and leaned her forehead against his, holding him softly.

Hiccup squeezed her.

"For real now though," Astrid started and pulled back to look at him. "We'll make it another fifty years, right?" She asked, observing him.

"I mean...we're forty-seven now so we'd be ninety-seven but, yeah. Unless you've had enough of me and decide to leave me behind," He joked. Astrid slapped his chest.

"I hope we can make it for at least thirty-five more years."

Hiccup nodded, kissing her lips and being thankful for everything she's done to him and for making him as happy as he was.

They did make it for another thirty-five years before Astrid did have enough and left him behind at the frail age of eighty-four. Having once felt empty at the loss of his other half, he had chuckled at her when he'd met her again, looking like the beautiful twenty-year old she used to be.

"You can't get rid of me that easily."

"I wasn't trying to either."
