Chapter 44

Astrid was tossing and turning all night, not being able to sleep or find her position. She sighed and slowly pushed herself up into a sitting position and scooted to the edge of the bed. Her feet dropped to the floor and she looked at the wall on the clock. 5:45 AM. Gods, she was tired and exhausted and she really had to pee.

Pushing herself up, she felt a gush of water run down her legs.

Oh. My. Gods.

"Hiccup..." She said softly. Turning her head, she saw him turn but not wake up. "Hiccup." She said again, a little louder. He groaned. "Hiccup! Wake up!" She yelled and he jolted up. "Huh? What's going on?" He asked and looked around, groggy.

Astrid panted when a bad menstrual-feeling cramp kicked in. His eyes landed on her and he suddenly woke up. "Astrid...what's wrong?"

"My water...labor...baby's coming," Was all she said. Hiccup jumped out of bed, barely putting his prosthetic on and making his way over to her side.

He didn't get to say anything before Astrid put a hand on her stomach and said, "Get the keys and call your mom. We have to go. Now!"

Hiccup was a fumbling mess but they made it out to the car. Toothless and Stormfly were both very confused at the sudden stress. Hiccup grabbed his phone and called his mother as he turned the car on.

A few tones later, Valka answered. "Hiccup? What's going on? Why are you calling me at 6 AM-?"

"Valka? Get to our house and pack the baby stuff. She's coming," Astrid said, clutching her stomach while she tried to make herself comfortable in the back seat.

"What!?"

"Mom, calm down. Her water broke a few minutes ago. Can you get over to the house and pack a bag with stuff she might need? We're in the car to the hospital right now," Hiccup said as he turned out of the driveway and started driving towards the hospital.

"Oh gods. Yeah, I'll do that. I'll see you guys at the hospital," She said before ending the call.

Astrid panted as another wave of pain washed over her. "Hold on. We're almost there," Hiccup said, thankful for the car being four-wheel driven and not getting stuck in three foot of snow.

"It's coming every three minutes. She's here soon," she said. They hadn't gotten to know the gender yet but she assumed it was a girl. Hiccup really wanted a baby girl so he could spoil her with flowers and bears and hugs and kisses.

"Just hold on. We're there in a few minutes," Hiccup said, seeing the hospital in front of him.

Quickly pulling into the parking lot after two blocks, he ran out of the car and opened the back seat door. "Goddamn this car, why is it so fucking big?" She said through gritted teeth.

"It's not that big." Hiccup said. Astrid gave him a, "really?" look and he chuckled. "Yeah, okay, you're right. It's big," he agreed, not to piss her off.

The saying was right. "Happy wife, happy life."

Even is she wasn't his wife yet.

"Ugh, can this pain finally be over?" Astrid complained, finally laying on a hospital bed, changed into a hospital gown and hooked onto a bazillion machines that check her heart and the babies.

The midwife stepped into the room and Astrid sighed in relief. "Thank god."

The midwife clasped her hands together. "So, how about we check how open you are and go from there?" She asked and walked up to her. "Anything. Just get this baby out of me and end my pain."

The midwife lifted the blanket to check and she looked at Astrid. "Okay. His head is crowning," She announced. "Next time the pain comes, you push, okay?"

"Okay-" Astrid groaned. "So, like, right now?" She said through gritted teeth. "Yes."

Hiccup grabbed Astrid's hand and kissed her forehead. "Hey, breathe," He said softly, calming her down and focusing on the pain.

"And...push."

She did.

Gods. It hurt so much.

"Just a few more times then you don't have to do it again," Hiccup said softly. "I know," Astrid panted. Another jolt of intense pain shot through her.

"Push! The head is out."

She couldn't do it. She couldn't. It hurt so much. Never in her life had she experienced pain like this and she felt her energy slip away when the pain became more intense.

Without even registering it, she pushed and felt the shoulder's of the baby pop out and she sighed in relief when the intense stretch was gone and the pain had subsided.

"Ohh! Here it is! And...it's a girl! Woah, she's a big one!" The midwife said and cleaned her up before softly laying the baby down onto Astrid's chest.

She looked at the pinkish-purple little human on her. Hiccup was at a loss for words. Babies were usually so ugly but this one...she's perfect.

We just got a baby. A girl. Oh my gods, I have a baby girl. And she's mine. How'd I even manage? I'm a father now. I have a daughter. I'm about to pass out.

Astrid smiled and looked up at her boyfriend. "She's ours," She said in disbelief. "We have a daughter," Hiccup said and looked at Astrid after looking at the baby. "She's perfect. You're perfect," He breathed out before kissing her endlessly.

Cheeks, forehead, temple, nose, lips, there wasn't a place on her face that wasn't kissed. "I love you so much, my gods," He said once he pulled away. "Thank you. Thank you so much."

He couldn't stop thanking her. How could he? She gave him a real life and a family. He could say, "Thank you," every day for the rest of their lives and it still wouldn't be enough.

"Hiccup?"

"Yes, beautiful?"

"What's her name gonna be? We barely talked about it," Astrid asked, huffing from exhaustion. A small throbbing pain pulsed between her legs. Hiccup looked down at his daughter for a moment.

"Abigail."

"Abigail? Why?"

"Because that name means, "father's joy," and she really is my joy," Hiccup said and carefully put his hand on her head, stroking her forehead with his thumb.

Astrid looked at him before looking at the baby.

"Welcome to the world, Abigail Joy Haddock."

"Joy, huh?" Hiccup mocked. "Hush you dork. Your middle name is Horrendous, literally," Astrid pointed out and poked Hiccup in the stomach.

"Ow, that wasn't nice," He complained but shut up when Abigail started fuzzing. Astrid hushed her.

The baby girl yawned and opened her eyes to look at her parents. Hiccup fell in love all over again.

"Astrid..." He exhaled. "She has heterochromia. All the guys will be chasing her down, that's for sure."

"Not on my watch. She's my little baby girl and I'll keep her that way for as long as I can," Hiccup said and smiled. "Help me undo this gown so I can feed her?" She asked and looked at her boyfriend.

"Sure," He said and untied the knot at her neck and carefully pulled the fabric down. Astrid guided her down and the little baby latched onto her nipple and started eating.

The door opened and in came Valka, covered in melting snow from head to toe, carrying bags of baby stuff and clothes for Astrid.

She gasped when she saw the couple.

"Oh, I missed all the fun, didn't I?" She asked and carefully put all the stuff down on the small couch in the room. "Who is this little fuzzy miracle though?" She asked softly and walked up to the couple.

"Mom, this is your granddaughter. Let me introduce you to Abigail Joy Haddock. Born just a few minutes ago, at 6:35 AM."

Valka gasped. "A baby girl," She said, excited to have a small girl to play with in the future.

The sky was slowly starting to turn darker as time passed. Astrid has cleaned herself up a bit, they changed the bed sheets, cleaned the baby off and gave her a shower and Hiccup was the first one to put a diaper on her before dressing her. Valka has gone home to their place to watch out for the cats and make food for them when they come home the next day.

Once she had come back, they laid down in the bed, - somehow squeezed into the one person bed - and just looked at the little girl.

Hiccup still couldn't believe it.

They had sex one out of the many times, she had forgotten to take the pill and fallen pregnant and survived through the horrible things that happened at the beginning of the year and given him a baby girl. A healthy, beautiful girl born on October 25th, 2018 at 6:35 AM weighing 6,6 lbs and simply being a small little miracle.

Hiccup pressed a kiss to Astrid's temple and smiled at her.

"M'lady?" He asked softly and waited until she looked at him. Astrid turned her head towards her boyfriend and looked at him. Hiccup pressed his lips against hers forcefully, kissing her sloppily with tongue to let her know his passion.

Astrid hummed and pulled back after a few moments and smiled at him before looking back at the little one.

I have to say it. I can't wait anymore, Hiccup thought.

"Astrid, marry me."

The blondes head whipped towards his direction and she looked at him with wide eyes. "W-what?" She asked.

"Marry me. I can't not be with you. We have a daughter now. We're parents. Be my wife," He said, determined but lovingly.

"I-we...yes!" She exclaimed loudly. Abigail started crying after that and she hushed her softly before looking at Hiccup. "My gods, I will marry you," She said and threw her left arm around his shoulders and hugged him.

"Thank you," She said, almost crying herself.

"I'm sorry I didn't do it the traditional way but you'll get a ring soon, I promise," Hiccup said, smiling into her hair.

"Screw the ring. I'd marry you right now if I could," She said and brushed her fingers through his hair before wrapping her arms around Abigail again.

Hiccup laughed and, finally, it seemed like his life was looking a lot brighter than before.
