Chapter 42

When they pulled up at the driveway, Valka was standing in front of the door leading into the house. "How long has she been standing there?" Hiccup asked as he turned the engine off and reached back to grab the backpack. "Not too long, I guess. I texted her that we would be here within ten minutes after we left the house," Astrid said and got out of the car.

Closing the door behind her, she looked over at Valka and smiled. "Hello, Astrid," The aged woman greeted her with a smile. "Hello," Astrid said and walked up to her slowly. "How are things going? Felt anything from the baby yet?"

Astrid shook her head. "Not really. I'm barely passing the five- month mark soon and I read those first pregnancies vary and babies start kicking at different times," Astrid said and rested a hand on her stomach as she turned towards the black car.

Hiccup fiddled with stuff inside the car, - she wasn't sure what he was doing exactly but let him do it.

Valka hummed beside her. "True. It does vary. When I was pregnant with Hiccup, I felt him kick two weeks before my three-month mark. I must've been as big as you before he was born. He was so tiny and I feared he wouldn't make it..." Valka said softly, trailing off.

Astrid looked at the woman.

Valka smiled at her. "Oh, he was so eager to come out. Scared us half to death when he was born. He became a strong and loving young man though, from what I can see," She continued with a smile.

Astrid turned back to her boyfriend. "Yeah, I guess you're right," She said and watched as he proceeded to get out of the car and walk up to them.

The Suburban beeped behind them as he locked it. "What have I missed?"

"Baby talk."

"I hope it was about our little baby," Hiccup said, a slightly terrified look in his eyes as he watched Astrid.

"Oh, don't worry, we talked about this little one," She said and patted her stomach softly. She then reached up and ran her fingers through his hair. "And we talked about this one too."

"God fucking damnit."

"Hiccup! There are kids around!"

"...sorry."

"So, I need to write my signature on these papers?" Hiccup asked, sitting in his father's old chair in his office. The police chief was standing beside him on the left side and his father's lawyer, - now his - standing on his right.

"Yes," The police said and straightened his position beside the soon-to-be Mayor. The lawyer put down a piece of paper in front of him. "This one is for agreeing to speak with the city council when something's happening or is in the making."

Hiccup wrote his signature.

The lawyer put down another paper. "This one is for attending city ceremonies, occasionally weddings, funerals, etc, and or hold a speech if necessary."

Hiccup wrote his signature.

Another paper. "This one is for agreeing to go to jobs and inspect the place/see how people work and if necessary, fire or hire people."

Hiccup wrote his signature.

Another paper. "This one is for agreeing to oversee the laws, sign commissions, licenses, and permits legislated authority."

Hiccup wrote his signature.

"And last of all," The lawyer put down another paper, the last one. "This one is for agreeing to be the mayor over the city of Berk and it's residents."

Hiccup paused and looked at the paper before looking up at his mother and Astrid standing at the other side of the room. Astrid nodded with a reassuring smile.

Hiccup looked down at the paper before writing his signature.

Henry Haddock.

"Thank you for your time, Henry," The lawyer said once Hiccup had stood up. The gathered the papers and put them in a folder before he shook hands with him.

Hiccup turned to the police. "Thank you," He said before shaking hands.

The lawyer and police started heading out towards the door. "I will run a copy of these and send them over to you today."

"Um, excuse me..." Hiccup started and the two men stopped and looked back.

"I will only be Mayor if I can ease into it. These last months have been really hard for my family and we're still on our way towards recovery. I have a pregnant girlfriend who I want to be there for too."

The lawyer and police looked at each other before nodding. "Take your time. We know everything that's happened to you and your family. The council, me and the police station will handle things like we've done until you can get on your feet...er...yeah, and ease into it."

"Thank you."

The men left the room and closed the door behind them. Silence emitted the room until they heard the police car drive away.

"How did dad even deal with this?"

"He didn't. He tried though," Valka said and chuckled. "And you will too, I know that."

"Thanks, mom."

"Phew, what a day," Astrid said as she slipped into bed, her light nightgown on her. "You tell me? I'm exhausted," Hiccup said as he flopped into bed, sighing deeply. Astrid scooted up to him and started running her fingers through his hair.

"Mm," Hiccup hummed and closed his eyes, turning towards her and wrapping his arms around her form, nuzzling his nose into her chest and staying there. He loved the feeling of her fingers running through his hair and Astrid loved doing it because it was so soft.

The blonde leaned down and kissed his head softly before hugging him back.

Hiccup looked up and looked at her for a moment before leaning in and kissing her. His lips ghosted over hers for a second before he caught them and kissed her passionately.

Astrid pulled back. Not because she wanted to or because it was bad but because she knew he was tired and both of them should sleep. Pressing a kiss to his forehead, Hiccup laid back down and Astrid covered them slowly.

She kissed his head as they settled into a comfortable position and she drifted off with a smile on her lips, finally able to spoon him.
