Chapter 38

Hiccup's eyes fluttered open slowly, his mind cloudy from another nightmare about his father and the accident and him finding Astrid.

No matter how hard he tried, he couldn't seem to forget, - or, at least somehow push away, - the thoughts and it bothered him because he just couldn't get the image of Astrid in the bathroom, out of his head.

Groggily, he yawned and slowly turned his head towards his right side, expecting Astrid to lay in the bed next to his but he was met with pushed away covers and nothing else but a note on the bed.

Hiccup reached over and grabbed the paper, bringing it up to his face. It was written with a ballpoint pen, he realized. The blue text at the bottom caught his eye and a small smile appeared on his lips.

It had been from Astrid. He wondered what she wanted and why she had to write it on a paper instead of waking him up. His eyes shot up to the top of the small paper and he started reading.

Good morning, babe. Sorry if I'm not there when you wake up, - hence the note. I just couldn't sit in bed anymore. I'm taking a stroll through the hospital. I'll see you soon. I love you, Hiccup.
- Yours truly, Astrid.

Hiccup's smile widened and he placed his hand on his chest, note under his palm. He closed his eyes and sighed in contentment. "I love you more than you could ever imagine, Astrid," He whispered.

"I highly doubt that," A voice said. He turned his head towards the source and saw her, standing by the door in her hospital gown that looked similar to his, her bandaged hand holding her intravenous drip.

"Good morning, M'lady," Hiccup said with a small smile and propped himself up onto his elbows, looking at her like a love struck idiot, - he was one. She laughed at the look on his face and walked into their room. "Good morning, babe," She said as she walked around their bed and sat down on the edge of his.

"Come on," Hiccup moved slowly before gesturing to the space beside him. "Lay down with me," He said, wanting to cuddle her badly. Astrid looked at him. "Are you sure?" She asked and he gave her a serious look with a hint of playfulness. "Yes, Astrid. Come on. You're not going to break me," He said and opened his left arm for her.

"Okay..." She said and slowly eased her way onto the bed beside him, careful with the drip, where she put her arm and where her feet went. She'd hate herself if she accidentally kicked his leg, - the amputee one.

Luckily, she was careful enough and smiled, laying her bandaged arm onto Hiccup's stomach and intertwining her fingers with his. "I love you," They said in unison before laughing softly. She leaned up and pressed her lips against his, lingering before pulling away and laying her head onto his shoulder.

The morning was still early and they slowly dozed off together, their sleep better than ever now that they laid in each other's arms.

Astrid groaned, her neck aching slightly. Her back was freezing but something really hot was holding her. Her eyes cracked open and she looked forwards, her vision slightly blurry. It took her eyes a few seconds to clear up and she looked around.

A smile appeared on her lips once she saw him. His auburn hair was shaggy and slightly greasy due to not showering for the last two days. His thick eyebrows were slightly knotted together, showing discomfort. His eyelashes were long and dark and she so badly wished she could see the emerald green eyes of the man she had fallen in love for.

The freckles on his face varied in size, shape and color. Astrid squinted her eyes softly and examined a freckle on the side of his nose. It looked like a small, lopsided heart and she couldn't help but giggle for a moment. His thin but kissable lips turned upwards and his eyes cracked open, looking at her.

"What are you laughing about?" He asked, his voice tired and slightly hoarse. "You have a freckle that's shaped like a heart," She said and softly lifted her hand, placing the tip of her nail against the freckle. "I do?" He asked. "Yes, you do, dork," She said and buried her face into his chest. "I'm your dork, M'lady," Hiccup said before pulling her against him even tighter carefully.

His hand landed on her waist and his fingers rubbed against the side of her stomach and his breath caught in his throat. "Astrid, how are you feeling?" He asked, his voice a bit strained.

"I'm okay, why?" She asked and looked up. "I was just wondering. You know, the whole pregnancy thing..." Hiccup said slowly and looked at her, examining her face.

Astrid sighed. "I'm okay...it's just weird to think about and all that. It was never planned and...I'm not sure if I can do it."

Hiccup let her go and scooted up to rest his back against the pillows. Astrid sat up too and he adjusted the bed.

"Astrid, of course you can do it. You've made it so far, how could you not make it even more? You've been an amazing friend and girlfriend for the past half year and I have no idea how I could be so lucky to have you. You're perfect just the way you are and I love you for everything that you are," Hiccup said and then rested his left hand on her stomach. "And I love you for this too. Because you decided to keep him or her and give her a life. I love you and I'll love this baby, I promise you that."

Astrid sniffled and she placed her hands on his shoulders, her thumbs grazing the skin on his chin. He needed a shave but he still looked good with a stubble.

Her eyes landed on his lips and she stayed there for a second, running her thumbs along his jaw.

Astrid blinked once and looked up and into Hiccup's eyes. He smiled at her and the hand on her stomach made its way to her waist and he pulled her in.

"I love you," He said and slowly leaned closer. "I love you so much," Hiccup continued before pressing his lips to hers.

"I love you too," Astrid whispered against his lips and she smiled, not knowing why she got this blessed to keep him.
