Chapter 33
(A/N: Listen to, "Sleeping At Last - Saturn.")
Astrid groaned, her head heavy as her eyes opened slowly. Her back was aching and she sat up to stretch out the kink in her back. Three small lights that were hanging from the window were lit.
She smiled.
Hiccup must've been home because she didn't remember them being alight when she fell asleep.
She felt some weight beside her and saw both Toothless and Stormfly snoozing on the couch, lying curled up in a big ball of black and grey fur a few feet from her.
Her eyes traveled over the living room. The sky was dark and cloudy and there was heavy rain beating on the window. A vase of red, pink and yellow roses stood on the table and she remembered that they'd been there for days.
She closed her eyes and breathed in heavily. She needed that sleep. She had felt so bad and morning sick before she fell asleep but she felt refreshed and good again. "Babe?" She called out, expecting Hiccup to walk out from one of the rooms and into the living room, sit down by her side and kiss her good morning.
That didn't happen but the disturbing sound of her phone ringing caught her attention and she turned her head towards the kitchen island where it was laying and vibrating.
Getting up with a sigh, she yawned and looked around before grabbing her phone and answering. "Hello?" She asked, turning and looking at the cats.
"Hello? Is this Astrid Hofferson?" A woman asked. "Yes?" Astrid asked, her mind going a hundred miles an hour. "I'm Helen and I'm working at the trauma ward at Berk Hospital," She said.
Hospital?
Her heart stopped beating for a moment.
"I have some...bad news for you," Helen paused before inhaling deeply. "Steven Haddock and Henry Haddock were involved in a car accident. The impact was too hard and Steven passed on impact. Henry suffered a mild concussion and his left leg below the knee got crushed by the glove compartment. He's in surgery to amputate the severed limb but we don't know if he'll make it or not so please, prepare for the worst," The trauma ward worker said and went quiet.
Astrid's breath caught in her throat. Hiccup was in an accident? Surgery? Prepare for the worst?
"I'm really sorry, Ma'am," Helen said before hanging up.
Toothless and Stormfly meowed, looking up at her with concern laced in their eyes from the couch.
Astrid slowly lowered the phone from her ear and looked at the screen. She pressed the small symbol and it took her to contacts. She didn't have to search much after his name. After all, not everyone was named, "Mine 🥰🔐💍💕."
She called him and put the phone to her ear, her hand shaking.
It made a small snapping sound and she thought he'd picked up. "Oh gods, you scared me, Hiccup-" She said but was cut off by the phone.
"Sorry, the number you have tried to contact is invalid and the person you're looking for does not exist anymore. For more information-" Astrid slowly looked down at her phone.
It couldn't have been true, could it?
The blonde slowly pressed her thumb against the screen, turning the call off. She pushed the home button and up came a picture of Hiccup smiling right into the camera, his green eyes shining. Her phone slipped out of her hand and landed on the floor, bouncing on its corner once before landing on its back, screen up.
"NO!" She screamed, brushing her hands through her hair as tears were starting to stream down her face. "No! Hiccup! No!" She couldn't stop yelling and crying.
How could she? How could she be quiet and happy after getting a call from the hospital telling her that her boyfriend was in an accident and probably wouldn't survive? No one would be happy to hear that their loved one is in hospital, fighting to live through the next few hours.
Stoick was dead, Hiccup was in the hospital, his life on the line and she had no idea what to do anymore. If Hiccup died, who did she have left? Her parents were dead, Stoick was gone, she hadn't even heard anything about Hiccup's mother other than that she disappeared and never came back. Who did she have left? Stoick had been like a second father for her. He had offered to be there for her.
And Hiccup? Oh, her beautiful Hiccup.
He was her everything. Her safe place. He kept her down, - grounded her when she felt like she just wanted to disappear forever and never come back. He saved her that day they bumped into each other in school and she will forever be thankful for that.
She must've sat on the floor, a crying mess for well over 45 minutes.
Finally, she stood up and her shaking legs took her to the bathroom. The image of his face flashed before her eyes. Shaggy and soft auburn hair, his thick eyebrows and the million freckles scattered across his face. His crooked smile, thin, kissable lips and forest green eyes.
Oh, his eyes. They pierced into her very soul and saw her outermost deep secrets and fears. The million different shades of green, varying from light green to extremely dark. His eyes were the perfect definition of walking along a country road with endless fields on either side with no care in the world.
Astrid locked the door to the bathroom behind her when she entered. She didn't want Toothless and Stormfly to come in.
She placed her hands on the edge of the sink and looked at herself in the mirror. The black T-Shirt she was wearing was Hiccup's and she grabbed the edge of it, pulling it up and pressing her nose into the fabric.
It smelled exactly like him and she wondered if she could ever get to breathe it in again.
The fabric softly slipped from her shaking hands and it slid down her stomach and covering her shorts, resting at her mid-thigh. Her hands landed on the sink again, gripping it hard as she stared at her wrist full of white and pinkish scars.
Her mind blackened and her senses opened up. She could see and smell more. However, her eyes saw nothing other than shiny silver and crimson red as her nose flared at the smell of blood.
Crying and sobbing in distress, she slipped down along the bathroom wall, settling on the floor. Her eyes slipped shut and the only thing she felt was the pain of her broken skin and her broken heart.
If Hiccup was dying, so was she.
She promised herself that where he went, she'd go to and if it meant him leaving this place earlier than expected, then so be it.
Her breath was ragged as her mind slowly started to fade. The last thing she saw before slipping away was the razor laying loosely in her twitching hand and the beautiful face of her beloved.
Not long now...
