Chapter 32
(A/N: I suggest you to listen to, "Tom Odell - Heal," while reading this chapter.)
The bus driver slammed his foot on the break. The front wheels of the bus stopped rotating and smoke started to appear as they burned against the icy asphalt. A few passengers' screams were heard as the bus slowly skidded to a stop.
A woman in her seat stood up and looked out of the big windshield at the scenery in front of them. Two SUV's had crashed. From what she could see, it was an off-set crash, - one where the vehicles had crashed, clipping the corners on the driver side of each vehicle.
"Everybody, stay seated," The bus driver called out. She looked at the driver and grabbed her backpack, throwing it over her shoulder.
"Let me out!" She said loudly. The driver hesitated but looked at her and pressed the button to open the front door. The woman ran out of the bus and stopped for a second. She looked at the two cars.
Something felt oddly familiar about the red Nissan Juke SUV but she couldn't put a finger on it. Other people had stopped and ran up to the car, trying to help the people and call ambulances.
The woman set off into a run towards the red car, her feet slipping on the icy road a couple of times.
Her breath caught in her throat when she reached the car. "No..." She whispered out when she saw the people sitting in the car. Grabbing the door handle, she opened it and yanked it open. The door of the car made a snapping sound and she was sure she had broken the door with her force but at that moment, she didn't care, - the car was junk anyway.
Her green eyes darted over the two men in the car. "Stoick," She whispered, hearing sirens in the background. Her eyes landed on the young man with shaggy auburn hair and a scar on his chin. "Hiccup," She said and her hands started shaking.
Due to the impact from the other driver, the car had been hit hard from the left side, - the driver side - that Stoick sat motionlessly. The dashboard and leg rest close to Hiccup had been pushed up due to the impact and was crushing onto his left leg.
Tears formed in her eyes.
"Everybody, move," She heard and looked up, seeing two ambulances and four paramedics splitting up and running to the car.
She stayed though, not wanting to leave the two.
A paramedic ripped up the door on the driver side and checked for a pulse and any signs of life but there wasn't any. "Excuse me, ma'am," One said and she was forced to back away from the car. Police and the fire department had also arrived, - like they usually did when it was about car crashes.
A police officer came up to her. "Excuse me?" He asked. The woman looked up, her breath ragged and her teeth chattering. "Might I ask what happened?"
"I don't know much...I stepped down from the bus after the collision," She said. The policeman wrote down what she said. "Can I have your name too?" He asked and looked at her.
"Valka Haddock. Wife and mother to the Mayor and Henry Haddock," She said, looking at the car with empty eyes as the firefighters were working on cutting away the roof of the car. The policeman was quiet for a moment before saying, "I'm sorry, Ma'am," before walking away.
"There's no pulse on him but we have to get the young man out of the car. If he doesn't get to the hospital within half an hour, he's dead!" She heard paramedics yell. "He'll need to get that food amputated too," The other one said as they did their best to put a cervical brace on his neck to keep it from getting more injured than it probably already was.
Tears fell from her eyes. Valka could only watch as they slowly got her husband out of the car and put into an ambulance.
Firefighters were working hard to get her son out of the car. "Hiccup..." She fought out as she watched the paramedics wrap and brace what was left of his leg.
Time slowed down for her.
All she wanted to do was to visit her family and apologize for her disappearance. She had hoped they'd forgive her for going off without a reason and not returning for twenty years. He had been so young when she left.
Barely even a year old and she left just like that. She hated herself for that and she was sure he did too. Leaving him and not coming back.
She watched as he was put onto a stretcher and rolled towards the ambulance. She set off into a run towards the paramedics. "Wait!" She yelled just as they were about to close the doors. The paramedic halted and looked at her. "I'm his mother, let me come," She said.
"Okay, but hurry!" They said, panicked. Valka looked back at the mess of people and crashed cars before hopping into the ambulance.
She hoped they'd get to the hospital in time
