Chapter 31
Hiccup walked out of the house and closed the door behind him, locking it. He paused for a second, wondering if it was okay for him to leave her when she's sick with a fever.
Truth was, he probably didn't have a choice. His father had texted him not long ago, saying that the two of them had a meeting with someone who would teach him stuff about being a mayor and all that was included in being the "Chief," of the city.
Hiccup looked up and sighed. She would be fine. Plus, he wouldn't be away for more than two hours, tops. He walked over to his car and unlocked it, getting in and quietly starting the car.
Hiccup looked up at the door of the house. He put a small smile on his lips. He'd be back soon and then he could lay down behind her, arm around her waist and her head against his chest.
He honestly couldn't wait to be finished with what his dad wanted.
It wasn't that he didn't like his father because he did. He was family after all but ever since his mother disappeared, his father hadn't been the same and he missed the old times. He had been neglected by his own father ever since he was nine years-old all the way until he turned fifteen.
Hiccup slowly backing out of the driveway and onto the road, turning the car towards the road that led to the main road.
He remembered the time when he used to be neglected. It was a hard time for him but that was the time when he discovered who he really was. He was an adventurous boy who loved the forest, being out in the fresh air and just doing stuff that made him happy.
Maybe, once summer came again, they could all go out for a hike or a walk through the woods.
A smile crept onto his lips as he remembered the first time he'd found that clearing he called, "The Cove."
Memories ran through his mind about the times he had been outside with nothing other than his sketchbook and a pen. He missed those times. If he turned his old room upside down, he'd probably find the very first drawings he made when he was out on his adventures. Before he realized, he reached his father's house.
Parking the big car, he pulled out the key and unbuckled his seat belt. Getting out of the car, he was greeted by his father opening the door and stepping out of the house.
Hiccup looked at his father and was about to open the car door again but he stopped him.
"No, son. We're taking my car," He began and opened the garage door. "You've been driving much lately and you need some rest."
Hiccup shrugged. "I haven't been driving that much, dad. And, I don't mind driving. I love doing it. Why did you need me anyway?" He asked and looked at his father as he walked into the garage and opened the door to his car.
"Get in first, then we can talk."
Hiccup rolled his eyes with a small smile and got into the car.
Stoick started the car and slowly rolled out of the garage. He pressed the closing button on the garage key and the door closed after them.
He drove out of the driveway and onto the road.
"So, we are heading to the Police Station to fill out some paperwork and you need to be a part of this," Stoick said and looked at his son for a second before turning the car onto the road and starting to drive to the police station twenty miles and a highway from them.
"Why do we have to do that now?" Hiccup asked, looking at his father for a second before looking back onto the road out of habit.
"I know you're occupied with Astrid right now but we agreed months ago, Hiccup. Listen, we have to do this because I'm gonna be busy these next couple of days or possibly weeks and I just need to have a paper with your signature that you'll become the Mayor after I retire," Stoick said, turning onto the highway.
Hiccup sighed. "I know...I guess I'm just not ready to be Mayor. It's such a huge responsibility and I don't know if I'll be able to do it," He said, exhaling deeply. Stoick turned his head and looked at his son, raising one hand from the steering wheel and putting it on his son's shoulder.
"You're a Haddock for Thor's sake. You've done so much so far. I know its a big responsibility but you'll do alright. I promise you that, son," Stoick said, raising his hand and brushing it through his son's hair.
"Thank you, dad- WATCH OUT!!" Hiccup screamed.
Time seemed to slow down.
Stoick's head whipped towards the road and his hand landed on the steering wheel hard, gripping it until his knuckles turned white. A driver going well over the speed limit was sliding and swerving towards their direction on the icy road.
Stock swerved to the right before turning the car to the left. He hastily pulled his left hand away from the steering wheel and placed it on Hiccup' chest, pushing him into the seat. "DAD!" Hiccup yelled, holding onto the roof handle as the swerving car came closer. "SON!"
Hiccup's life flashed before his eyes.
He saw his mother's face for a split second, him playing in the park with his father. School, classmates, the gang.
Astrid.
CRASH.
His vision faded rapidly and the last thing he heard was his father calling out for him.
