Chapter 20

The black Suburban pulled up at a large house that looked very familiar to Astrid.

The Mayor's house. Astrid looked at the building in confusion before she turned her head to her boyfriend. "Hiccup? What are we doing here?" She asked and unbuckled her seatbelt when she saw him doing it.

Hiccup didn't respond. His brows furrowed and he had a focused look in his eyes. His lips were pressed together and he moved with confidence.

They got out of the car and she couldn't stop looking at him. "Babe?" She asked again, hoping for an answer but she got none.

Why were they at the Mayor's house? Did he have to get something done here before going to his dad?

What did he have to do with Steven?

She mentally shrugged and followed him. They walked up to the door and Hiccup opened it. How come it was unlocked?

They walked in and the Astrid closed the door behind her, confused. Wiping their shoes on the doormat, they walked in and Hiccup headed straight up the stairs, Astrid trailing behind him.

"Hiccup? Will you please tell me what we're doing here?"

He ignored her but when they reached the top of the staircase, he stopped and turned around, pulling her up the last step and against his chest. "I took you here to show you something. Maybe you'll remember," He said before pulling away and letting go of her, walking to the end of the hall and standing before a door.

Astrid trailed after him and stood beside him.

He inhaled deeply before he knocked on the door.

A deep voice coughed and then, a deeper voice said, "Come in."

Hiccup smiled at the blonde beside him and he opened the door. Steven looked up from his papers and looked at the young man with a slightly surprised face.

Hiccup smiled and walked into the room, pulling Astrid with him slowly.

Steven stood up and walked out from behind his desk.

The big room made Astrid feel so small. She looked over at her boyfriend and saw him look up at the mayor.

"Dad..." Hiccup said and looked up at the older man with innocent eyes. Steven let out a breath he didn't know he'd been holding and smiled, starting to laugh. He placed his large hand on Hiccup's shoulder and pulled him in. "It's good to have you here, son."

Astrid stared at them with huge eyes.

Hiccup was the Mayor son? Steven's son? And he was his father?

She did not expect that. She knew Hiccup was special but she had no idea he was the Mayor's son.

The men pulled away from each other and Hiccup smiled. "Yeah, it's been a while since last time. But, I wanna introduce you to someone, dad," Hiccup said and turned towards Astrid.

"This is-"

"Astrid Hofferson," Steven cut in and turned towards her. She looked up at the man. "How did you...?" Astrid questioned and looked at Hiccup. "He's got a few things to say to you later, I guess?" Steven looked over to Hiccup and he nodded.

"I'm sorry for your loss, Astrid. I know it's been years since then..."

Astrid looked up at the man. "Thank you. It feels like they didn't really love me though and...I understand if they didn't," Astrid said, her eyes on her feet. A hand landed on her shoulder and she felt the slight weight of it. Looking up, she saw loving eyes on her. Both from Hiccup and from Steven.

"You're wrong, Astrid. Your parents loved you very much. They were one of my closest friends. Then they came over here every once in a while, they couldn't stop talking about you and how much they loved you. How proud they were of you. Don't think that they didn't love you because they did," Steven said, his hand under her chin now.

Astrid looked over at Hiccup. He smiled at her. Steven pulled his hand back and looked at his son. "You may want to talk to her about those things. Take her into your room. It's left the same way as the last time you were there. Just...tidier."

"Yeah. Thanks, dad."

Hiccup held out his hand to Astrid and she took it, letting him lead her out of the room. She looked back at the Mayor and he smiled at her.

Turning back to her boyfriend, she looked at him. "Hiccup?" She asked. "Sshh," He hushed her softly and stopped at the first door before the staircase. He opened the door and slowly walked in, looking around.

All of the older memories came running into his mind and a small smile appeared on his lips.

"Couldn't you have told me that your father was the Mayor?" Astrid asked, slightly pissed off. Hiccup turned towards her. "No," He said and she was taken aback. "I didn't want to because I I didn't want to be treated differently."

She looked at him, all anger slipping out of her.

"Then...what did your...father want you to talk to me about?" Astrid asked, looking around the room. Hiccup sat down in his chair at his old desk. "It's just older stuff he wanted you to remember..." He said with a sigh, leaning his head into his hands.

Astrid looked over at him and slowly started to walk over to her boyfriend. She sat down on the floor in front of him, her hands on his arms, slowly prying his hands away from his face.

She succeeded and he looked down at her. He grabbed her arms and pulled her up, settling her down onto his lap.

Astrid wrapped her arm around his neck and she placed her free hand, - her right hand - on his cheek, her thumb moving along his jaw, caressing the small scar on his chin.

"Look," Hiccup started and looked at her, placing his hand over hers. "When your parents passed away, my father took you in until you moved to your aunt. I don't know if you can remember but, your room was beside mine. You never saw me but I always saw you and, I have to admit, I got a crush on you. I was so devastated when you moved away. Do you remember that one day you knocked on my door and you wanted to see who lived in here? We ended up hanging out that day and, you fell asleep in my bed. I slept on the floor that day but-"

Hiccup stopped talking when Astrid's arms flew around his neck and she hugged him. He smiled and wrapped his arms around her waist and back. "You didn't want to leave at the end of the week but you did anyway..."

Astrid cried. She cried like she had never cried before, trying to hold him as close to her as possible. Hiccup slowly stood up, still hugging her.

"I remember everything now. You were there for me that day. I'm so sorry for rejecting you and hurting you the way I did. I'm so sorry," She said, sobbing.

Hiccup smiled and pressed a kiss to her jaw. "It's okay. You were going through a rough time. I understood. I could never be mad at you..." He whispered softly and ran his hand through her bangs, - her hair was in her own unique braid.

Astrid smiled. "Thank you, Hiccup."

"Anything for you, M'lady," Hiccup said before kissing her passionately in the middle of his old room.

"Was about time," Came from the cracked open door where Steven stood.

"DAD!!!"
