Chapter 10

Hiccup woke up by the sun shining onto his face and he lifted his arm, placing it over his eyes. He felt something move beside him and peeked out, seeing Astrid snuggle closer to his side.

A lopsided smile formed on his lips.

He confessed to her yesterday.

Did I really confess to her yesterday? He asked himself. Astrid moved and draped her arm across his chest loosely, smiling in her sleep. Yes, yes I did.

The world seemed so peaceful at that moment.

His eyes turned towards the clock on the wall. Carefully picking his phone up from the nightstand, he looked at the time and date.

7:28 AM, April 18th.

Hmm, that date seems familiar, He thought. Looking at his phone again, it clicked. Holy shit. It's Astrid's birthday today.

Looking at the time and then at Astrid, he got an idea and slowly started to slip out of bed. Astrid groaned but didn't wake up, - thankfully.

Sneaking out of the room, he met Toothless who was about to meow. Hiccup quickly bent down and put his hand over his mouth, squeezing it shut while he hushed him. Toothless snarled at him once Hiccup had removed his hand.

"Listen, walk in to Astrid and lay down beside her. Do not wake her up. I'll be back as soon as I can, okay?" Hiccup asked, looking at the cat. Said feline blinked at him before turning his eyes towards the room and slowly strutting in. "Good boy."

Hiccup quickly but quietly changed and wrote a note to Astrid, saying, "Good morning, beautiful. I'll be back soon. I love you," with a heart after. He snuck into the room and put the note on his pillow, petting Toothless' head softly and then leaving.

Astrid woke up by the sound of a cat purring. She expected to see Hiccup laying there, his tousled hair looking like a birds nest but instead, she found a big black blob of fur, purring on Hiccup's side.

Looking around, thoughts started to run through her head. Looking back at Toothless, she put a hand on what she thought was his head. "Toothless? Where's Hiccup?" She asked, looking at him.

His actual head came out from under his tail and he looked at the blonde before turning his head towards the note on the pillow. Astrid's eyes followed him and she reached out, grabbing the note and reading it.

She hummed, laying the paper down and petting the cat. "Your owner is such a dork, did you know that?" She asked. Toothless crooned and crawled closer to her, turning and laying down at her chest, his neck just below her nose and she blew warm air into his fur.

Laying her head back down onto the pillow, she put an arm around the cat and loosely hugged him, falling back asleep.

 •••

Hiccup turned in onto his driveway, hoping that the sound from the non-stock exhaust wouldn't wake her up. People might see his car as an ordinary, big truck but he had tinkered with it whenever he was free and custom did this and that on it. He loved cars, what else was he supposed to do?

Turning the engine off, he pulled the keys out and grabbed the things from the passenger seat. Astrid deserved a real birthday, - or, as real as it could get without having people over. He had gone to a bakery a bought a small birthday cake with flowers on top of it before going to a florist and getting a small basket full of different kinds of flowers.

On the way home, he had stopped by and gone grocery shopping where he had bought a small teddy bear for her.

Maybe he was a hopeless romantic after all.

Getting out of the car, he locked it and walked up to the door, carefully unlocking it and stepping inside, trying not to wake up the blonde birthday girl sleeping in his bed, - if she was asleep, of course.

Taking his shoes off, he heard a faint, "Hiccup?" and he cursed himself for waking her up. "One second, Astrid. I'll be there soon," He said and walked into the kitchen, taking the cake out of the bag and putting it in the fridge along with the groceries. Taking Toothless' big bag of dry cat food out of the cabinet, he poured out a cup into his bowl and changed his water before grabbing the bear and flowers and walking towards the room.

Hiccup smiled when he entered the room, seeing her cuddle with Toothless. "Good morning, M'Lady," He said softly. Astrid looked at him and her mouth fell open. She sat up as Hiccup walked closer and settled down on the edge of the bed on her side.

He gave her the basket of flowers before giving her the bear. "Happy Birthday, beautiful," He said before leaning in and pressing a kiss to her forehead. "Hiccup...you didn't have to," She said and buried her nose into the flowers.

"But I wanted to because you deserve it."

Astrid raised her head and smiled at him, "Thank you," She said.

Hiccup nodded before laughing at her, not being able to hold it in anymore. She looked at him, questioning his outbreak. "You..." He tried to say something between laughs. Taking a deep breath, he reached up and wiped her nose. "You have pollen on your nose," He said with a chuckle.

"Oh, dear gods," She said and rolled her eyes, trying to be serious but failing.

Playing the teddy bear and the flower basket on the nightstand, she shifted and crawled up to Hiccup, bumping her nose against his.

"Astrid?"

"Be quiet and just kiss me," She said, shifting her gaze between his eyes and lips.

"Yes, ma'am."
