Chapter Ten: The Roots of Evil
The Lesser Lord George was a slave, a supreme slave but a slave none-the-less. The Mamlish was a society built upon a strict hierarchy and manners – of course, it did not follow that those at the top of the pyramid had it better than those at the bottom.
In fact, there were checks and balances that worked to make sure that those who were nominally at the top of the Mamlish society did not grow powerful. It was impossible to make any policy decision as a free person. It was impossible to get a position in the government as a free person. The idea behind this was that if you had never been a servant to a person, then you didn't have the skill sets required to be a servant of the people.
Some slaves came from a long line of slaves. Nominally all slaves were eunuchs, because it was thought that if you had children you might serve your family rather than your master. Besides the practice of turning people into eunuchs was recognised as undignified and may require some people to be impolite. In fact, eunuchs were outlawed in one of the early moves by the policymakers.
Now all that was required to be a eunuch was a vow of chastity. A vow of chastity required that the vower vow not to engage in any activity that might be seen as unchaste in a place where they might be caught.
What was seen as unchaste – well it depended on whether the person was free or enslaved. For free people being seen talking to a person that they were not related to was potentially seen as unchaste, but it must be understood that slaves have to go out into the world and would have to interact with a diverse group of people, both free and enslaved. Certainly, the bar was much lower for the enslaved, as befitted their position.
The Lesser Lord George's owner was named Radnor Colt. He works as a weaver in the homeland. Radnor had sent the Lesser Lord George over to Zilby to create find a market that he could see his cotton reams to.
In this, the Lesser Lord George did his job admirably. All schools in Zilby were required to wear school uniforms. All school uniforms were required to be made of the finest cotton. The finest cotton often turned out to be Colt Cotton
Radnor was a kind man, he didn't like to involve himself in the personal lives of those who worked for him., but when he did he extended a kind ear and did whatever he could to relieve the suffering of those he could. He did not distress himself over things that he had little or no control over. He certainly did not go looking for trouble such as bothering himself with the sufferings of those who were under the people who were under him.
Whenever the Lesser Lord George entered a room a caller would call out "Heree, Heree, listen all you can hear. Here comes the honourable, the admirable Lesser Lord George. He comes as the esteemed representative of Radnor Colter and is worthy of the task he attempts to do. He does not consider his own needs first, but always defers to the interest of his master. All you who can hear, listen instead."
The inspiration for the Lesser Lord George came from all the meticulous people in James life. The people who seemed to get all together by planning and organisation. Of particular interest were James's parents Cecil and Cornelia. The two believed in plans and they were always disappointed by the lack of detail in James plan.
"James is always just trying to wing it" Cornelia said when presented with a colour-coded notebook that James had made detailing his activities for the week. "I don't know how he thinks he will get anything done when he has simply put "Play" for three o'clock this afternoon. What will he play, where will he play, what will he wear when he plays"?
"This is how he wears out his better clothes. He has no system of tracking how many times he has worn each pair of underwear, how will he know when he needs to buy a new pair" said Cecil.
"Dad, I will know based on the number of holes in them" said James in protest.
"Yes son, but if you were organised you would be able to buy a new pair a week before the holes develop, thereby avoiding any embarrassing situation."
"You will also be able to give to charity. Nobody wants to receive items of clothing that are worn out and full of holes. However, if the clothes develop holes one week after they received it, they should just be grateful for what they got"
"I don't want to give them my second-best things that I don't want. That's not charity" said James in defiance.
"That's all very good and a noble sentiment boy, but it often gets used as an excuse to not give anything to charity at all." said Cecil "You can check that you are not using it as an excuse by keeping a register to make sure that you are giving to charity on a regular basis"
"The debs come around and give you a sticker if you give them a R5 coin. I have a whole sticker book of them" said James.
"Now, now, we don't do our good deeds so that we can boast about them James. You need to check your heart, James" said Cornelia.
"I've seen James's sticker book" said Alicia and it was true she had broken into his room and looked at everything that was there "He gets an "I gave to charity sticker every week and sometimes he gets two, because sometimes he gives two R5 to different debs"
"Alicia, stop looking at my stuff!" cried James and he marched out of the room.
The man who played the Lesser Lord George was named Milton Lewis and he was particularly famous. He was known all around the world and was regarded as a looker. He was a tall slender man, with delicate features, long thin fingers. He had blond hair but for the role of the Lesser Lord George, James had asked him to keep his head shaven.
His vision for the Lesser Lord George was a man that was soft spoken, caring and unspeakable cruel. He managed to convey this sense to the audience by speaking slowly with measured words, he never raised his voice, he never interrupted anybody that spoke to him, he never allowed himself to be interrupted.
When James had heard the news that Milton Lewis had accepted the role of the Lesser Lord George he was on top of the world. He felt as if that no bad thing could happen that would cause his project to fail.
"The only problem you will now have" said Alicia when talking to James "Is that everybody is going to ask when you are going to give him a love interest. Nobody is going to believe that such a good-looking man is single"
"Nobody is going to be judging him for his looks Alicia, it's all going to be about he delivers his lines" he replied.
"You believe that if it makes you happy, also now you will have a hard task casting Phoenix, because your hero needs to be better looking than your villain, this isn't Harry Potter – Draco is so hot, Harry is meh."
"Stop objectifying men in front of me Alicia." Said James in an attempted to shut her commentary down. 'I don't appreciate it"
"Okay, still Milton, quite a catch. Heard he is going through a divorce, must be tough to be so far away from your family." She paused "We will always be together? Right? James? We will always be by each other's sides."
"We are not married, Alicia, and it is weird that you are comparing us to a married couple." James said pointedly to his sister.
"Oh, no, no, no, you are much better than a husband in my mind, there is nothing that you can do to get rid of me." Said Alicia cheerfully.
"I can always get a restraining order against you" said James.
"On what grounds, James, you have to give the police a reason why you fear me and why you would want me to keep away from you."
"Is not the fact that I am contemplating suicide when I am around you not good enough a reason?" said James.
"Oh no! James is your depression flaring up again" said Alicia with genuine concern in her voice.
"It was a joke, Alicia. I have never been happier than I am now." Said James quickly.
"Well don't joke about mental health problems. You are doing very well for yourself, but sometimes even the most successful people struggle the most with depression and anxiety. I wouldn't want to overlook it in my own little brother."
"Don't worry about me, focus on yourself, Alicia. I don't want you to look after me and likewise I don't want to look after you"
"I will always worry about my little brother" said Alicia brightly "but he is getting so competent that soon I fear he won't need me"
"I haven't needed you in years, indeed some might argue that I have never needed you"
"Look I have to go, but you should appreciate the good things in life and don't forget to be proud, you have achieved so much, I know the people you are talking to, act like this is a normal thing, but it is not" said Alicia.
"Thing is, Alicia, I have to look to the next thing otherwise I will get starry eyed and the momentum will stop, and I will slide back. I can't feel proud, not yet there is so much more to do."
"Don't overthink this James, they love your work already, they love your work because your work is the best. People may say many things, but don't worry about it, if Milton Lewis who can accept any job that he wants, can see the talent in what you write, don't second guess it"
