The combination of her abandonment and her lack of maternal instinct left me feeling isolated and adrift. The woman I had trusted and loved had turned her back on me and our child, leaving us to navigate a world of pain and abandonment. The emotional scars from that period are still fresh, a constant reminder of how deeply I was hurt.
And now, as I look at Saana-who has stepped into a role that was never hers to begin with-I am struck by the contrast. Saana's willingness to care for Shree, her genuine love and protectiveness, highlight the stark differences between her and Pallavi. Saana's compassion is a balm to the wounds left by Pallavi's betrayal, and her presence in our lives feels like a redemptive force, offering the love and stability that had been so sorely lacking.
I understand now why Pallavi is so desperate to get Shree back—it's not out of genuine love or concern for our daughter but merely for the sake of appearances. She craves the title of the "best mom" from the media, seeking validation and status rather than caring for Shree as a mother should. Her actions make it clear that her interest in Shree is driven by a superficial need to enhance her image rather than a deep-seated maternal instinct.
The truth is, Pallavi never truly loved Shree as her own. Her affection was always conditional, and it was clear that her priorities were more about her own benefits and public perception. The person Pallavi left me for was none other than my rival, Mr. Chopra. The betrayal stings even more knowing that her departure was not just a personal loss but a maneuver that affected my professional life as well. The fact that she chose him—a man who was a direct competitor—over her own family speaks volumes about her character and the lack of genuine affection she had for Shree.
After that day, I became hardened and unfeeling. The emotional scars from Pallavi's betrayal transformed me into someone who was distant and cold. I couldn't bring myself to hold Shree, not because of any fault of hers, but because every cry and every need from her reminded me of the pain Pallavi caused me. I was left with the heavy burden of raising a child alone, and the memories of how Pallavi, whom I once trusted and loved, left me for someone else, turned my heart to stone.
Each time I looked at Shree, I saw not just a reminder of my ex-wife’s abandonment but the stark reality of being left with the responsibilities of parenthood I never expected to shoulder alone. It was as if her presence was a constant echo of my pain and betrayal, making it difficult for me to connect with her in the way a father should. The warmth and affection that a child needs from a parent were obscured by my own feelings of resentment and grief.
I was consumed by self-loathing and regret, constantly cursing myself for the mistakes I had made in the past. Every decision that led to my current situation, every misstep in my personal life, seemed like a cruel twist of fate. I found myself trapped in a cycle of blaming my past choices for my present suffering. The bitterness and anger I felt towards myself only compounded the difficulty of connecting with Shree. I couldn’t escape the harsh reality that my failures had not only affected me but had also deeply impacted the innocent child who was now in my care.
POV END
Unable to sleep, Saana decided to seek solace in the fresh night air on the terrace. Her mind was abuzz with thoughts of the future and the responsibilities that lay ahead for both her and Sidharth. The stillness of the night seemed to amplify her reflections and worries.
As she approached the terrace, she noticed Sidharth by the pool area, his silhouette illuminated by the soft glow of the moon. Surprised to find him there at such a late hour, she called out to him softly, her voice a gentle whisper against the quiet night.
“Sidharth,”
Sidharth sat at the edge of the pool, his large frame hunched over as he silently wept, nursing a bottle of beer. His gaze was fixed on the darkness beyond, his expression etched with deep turmoil. Saana, noticing the strain on his face, joined him in silence for a moment. The weight of the night seemed to press heavily on them both. After a few moments, she decided to gently break the silence.
“Sidharth,”
she said softly,
“I know this isn’t easy. We have a lot to figure out, and it’s all happening so quickly.”
Sidharth turned to face her, his expression serious yet tinged with vulnerability.
“I understand, Saana. It’s just that... I can’t stop thinking about everything we have to manage, and how crucial it is to ensure that everything falls into place for Shree. The weight of this responsibility feels overwhelming.”
Saana noticed the thin layer of tears in his eyes. Understanding his unspoken need for comfort, she gently rubbed his biceps, offering silent support.
"Bohot saha hai na tune? Meri wajah se?"
she asked softly.
He whispered, his voice laden with regret,
"I regret, Saana. Why didn’t I recognize the value of simplicity? Why?”
Saana noticed the thin sheen of tears in his eyes. Understanding his need for comfort, she gently rubbed his biceps, her touch soothing and reassuring.
"Bohot saha hai na tune? Meri wajah se?"
he asked, his voice barely a whisper, each word revealing the deep remorse and guilt he felt.
"I regret, Saana. Why didn’t I recognize the value of simplicity? Why?"
His voice choked, betraying the weight of his regret.
"It's okay, Sidharth. Let’s not dwell on that,"
she said gently, not wanting to revisit the painful past that might cause her to lose her composure and break down in front of him.
Sidharth's voice trembled as he looked at Saana,
"No, Saana. Tell me, why don’t you hate me? How can you be so forgiving?"
"Sidharth, please,"
Saana said softly, trying to steer the conversation away from the painful past.
"The more we discuss this, the more complicated things will become."
Sidharth, his emotions raw and exposed, cupped her face gently with one hand, his thumb brushing against her cheek.
"Why are you so selfless, Saana? You’re not leaving this time, are you?"
Despite knowing how persistent and stubborn a drunk Sidharth could be, Saana nodded firmly.
"No, I won’t leave. I’ll take care of Shree and you."
The words slipped from her lips almost instinctively. Even though she was determined not to reveal her vulnerability, Sidharth's tearful state and his raw need tugged at her heart, making it difficult for her to maintain her emotional distance.
Hearing her response, Sidharth gently rested his forehead against hers. The gesture was intimate, conveying a mix of relief and deep emotion. The closeness offered both comfort and a silent acknowledgment of their shared burden.
Sidharth’s gaze remained fixed on Saana, captivated by her beauty and the intensity of the moment. A wave of desire surged through him, leaving his throat dry and his emotions in turmoil. Despite the overwhelming pull, he fought to maintain control, reminding himself of their shared commitment to Shree. With a deep breath, he ran a hand through his hair, forcing himself to look away, struggling to refocus on their responsibilities.
Sidharth licked his lips, his voice trembling with vulnerability.
“I just hope I can be the father Shree needs. I don’t want to let her down again.”
Saana placed a comforting hand on Sidharth’s shoulder and smiled at him warmly.
“You will be,”
she reassured him.
“We’ll do this together, step by step. We’ll support each other and make sure Shree knows she’s loved.”
Sidharth looked up at her, his eyes a mix of gratitude and resolve.
“Thank you, Saana. It means a lot to me that you’re willing to do this for Shree. I promise I’ll do everything in my power to make this work.”
Saana gave a reassuring smile.
“We both want the best for her. We’ll face whatever comes our way together.”
*
As the night deepened, Sidharth and Saana sat together in the stillness, the intensity of their earlier conversation giving way to a deeper, more profound connection. They spoke openly of their fears and hopes, their unspoken emotions finally finding expression. Despite the challenges that loomed ahead, their shared commitment to Shree and the enduring feelings between them provided both a sense of purpose and hope, even amidst the prevailing uncertainty.
Unable to hold back any longer, Sidharth finally voiced the question that had been gnawing at him for so long. His voice trembled with raw emotion as he asked,
“Kya hum kabhi pehle jaise honge?”
