Chapter x-Midnight, lose my mind

Despite the urge in my chest, pleading for me to see those blue eyes again. I danced. I danced and I danced like the night would never end, or like this was my last night on earth. I watched as I spun around and caught clashes of my hair, almost glowing, reflecting the warm tones of the fires. I felt as if I was caught in a trance.

Suddenly the wind blue out of the clouds, and I swore, for one moment I heard my name called again. "Siofra"

I shuttered, partly from the could, and partly from the terrifying way that voice called my name. It was my name, but the only people who had ever called me that were people handling official documents, but even then, they brutally mispronounced it. It's pronounced like SHEE-frah and they are always trying to say "so-fra".

"Hey, are you cold?" a voice called. I turned to see a masked Conall. I sighed, and nodded. He threw his worn out jean jacket over my shoulders, and I pulled it on, pulling it tighter around me.

I sighed deeply. I was exhausted. Conall seemed to notice my change of mood, and he put a hand on the small of my back.

"Sophie, how about I walk you home? The party is already beginning to end, and it's only the first day of Beltaine," he voice was calm and gentle, but I shook my head.

"I'm queen, am I not? All I need is some caffeine. Hell, I'd kill for a redbull," I say half jokingly as I nudge him.

He only frowned, "those can kill you ya know.."

I rolled my eyes exaggeratedly, "Oh boo hoo." sarcasm dripping from my words. I shouldn't be rude to Conall, he was only looking out for me.

He just tightened his jaw and let out a fake laugh. I took his hand and pulled him to dance with me, we barely stopped dancing when someone called out.

"It's midnight!" and with that, people started cheering. I laughed out loud, taken back by this, and the traditional music stopped playing, and two trucks drove up to the top of the hill, with large speakers in their trunks.

I guess midnight means "hell to tradition", because I swear everything from Nirvana to Lorde started playing. I screamed joyously, and threw my hands into the air. I bet we looked stupid, all these girls in long, traditional, pastel colored dresses and masked, jumping up and down dancing to pop music and the guys all in jeans and jackets and flannel shirts, looking as if they are about to work on the farm.

"Muirgen!" I called when I caught a glimpse of that fiery hair. But as soon as I saw it, it disappeared. I frowned, and continued to search the crowd. Some sort of light in the distance caught my eye. I looked again, and I saw something shimmering on the other hill, with that ring of Hawthorn trees.

My body moved on it's own volition. I began to walk towards it, as if caught in some sort of haze. My heart began to beat quickly, and a fiery pain like needles began to spread across my chest, hands, and legs. I felt my palms heat up and my face begin to flush. I felt that same wind again, and that same urge in my chest. I heard my name once more, Siofra, called into the wind.

I felt the need fill my heart, I needed to figure out what that light was, and something told me I'd see those eyes again. The idea of never seeing them again filled me with such pain, I physically shook from fear.

I was almost to the circle when someone called my name, "Sophie?! Where are you?" Muirgen's voice cried. Suddenly, I felt like I was dunked in a bath of cold water, snapping out of that trance.

I glanced back at the ring of hawthorn trees, but whatever that light was, it was gone. I called back to Muirgen hesitantly, "I'm coming! I'm here."

As soon as I arrived at the top of the hill, Muirgen embraced me in a large hug, and pulled back from me. Worry filled her eyes, "Let's get you home, you've had a long day."

I groaned, but finally complied as I saw other people talk to walk back down the hill. I had just started walking again when I felt someone's hand brush against me.

It shot sparks of electricity all over my body, and I couldn't prevent myself from desperately searching all around me. For a moment, I locked eyes with those eyes that were so blue, I felt like I was drowning in them. As soon as I saw his eyes, he was gone, and my chest felt even heavier than before.

I am so tired I'm hallucinating, I really need to sleep.

Muirgen walked me home, and as soon as I got home, I silently tip-toed up stairs to my bedroom and passed out on the bed, not even taking time to get under the covers or out of my dress and Conall's jacket. The crown of flowers still sat on my head, heaven only knows how it didn't fly off.

"Shhh she's asleep," a voice called.

"Oh hush, she's a gift, it shouldn't matter," another called.

"No one has ever collected the human gifts before, you know that." the first called again.

"Well, we've never been presented with one quite like this, have we now? She's not human anyhow. At least, not mortal."

I sat up in bed, and looked around the room. All I saw was darkness, and despite my panting breaths, I collapsed against the bed all too fast, moments later, I was sound asleep.
