The Change: Re- Written

Nothing really changed when Amy found out Shadow had a girlfriend.

Alright, that was a lie.

She knew that sooner or later that kind of thing was meant to happen. Shadow is one of the heroes of Mobius. His personality may be misinterpreted but he has a good heart. Anyone with the right mind would think he is a catch.

And he absolutely is.

They have been best friends for three years now. The story of how their friendship bloomed would be told at another time.

However, Amy can't pinpoint when exactly she started to develop feelings for Shadow or if it was just a sudden feeling. Maybe if she thinks deeply enough, she could remember. But now thinking about him hurts.

"Why the long face?"

The pink hedgehog has been distracted recently. So much that she forgot that she was at work. Her actual work. The Resistance was just something she did in her free time. But she still needs to pay the bills in some way or another.

"You know the bread doesn't taste good if it's made with a sad heart," Vanilla said.

Amy works at Vanillas' bakery. She helps her bake all kinds of desserts. Sweet bread, cookies, brownies, and strawberry shortcakes, among other things. She enjoys it, it's definitely better than the office work she has to do back at HQ.

"I am sorry, I've been feeling kind of off. That's all," Amy says as she tries her best to smile. "But I promise I'll try to make the bread extra fluffy!"

Amy carries a batch of bread, ready to be put in the oven.

"Does this have to do with Shadow?"

Amy almost drops the batch but she quickly catches it. Her impulse made it impossible for Vanilla not to notice the truth. That Shadow is somehow having control of her feelings.

"I ..." Amy makes a small pause and looks at Vanilla. She knows she can't hide it from her. "Maybe."

"I heard he recently started dating someone. Are you worried about his girlfriend?"

Vanilla takes a sit on the kitchen table and signals Amy to do the same. The pink one sits in front of the rabbit.

"No, I think she's great but-"

"But you wish you were in her place, correct?"

Amy's quiet and she feels a knot form down her throat.

"Is it that obvious?" Amy's voice cracks and a few tears are forming in the corner of her eyes. "I am sorry."

"Oh, honey, don't apologize," Vanilla moves her chair closer to Amy and embraces her delicately. "It's alright, let everything out."

"I shouldn't have fallen in love with him," Amy can't control the tears from coming out of her eyes. She feels like there is missing in her lungs and her heart beats rapidly. "He is my best friend. It's my fault."

"We can't control with whom we fall in love with," Vanilla uses a clothe to clean Amy's tears. "Don't you think it will do you good if you tell Shadow?"

"No, that would just ruin the friendship," Amy hiccups a little as her voice continues to break. "I just want to get over these feelings quietly. I think need some time away from everything."

"I don't think it's good to keep these feelings to yourself. But I understand if you need time to figure out what you need to do."

She took the first train to Spring Village. Amy told Vanilla that if anyone tries looking for her, to tell them to not worry and that she will be back in a couple of days. And of course to not look for her.

Amy had blocked everyone so her time alone wouldn't be interrupted, she especially did not want to read any messages or have missed calls from Shadow. She recognizes she is weak and the moment there is some type of contact she will immediately go back to see him.

Spring Village is known for having weather that assimilates spring all year long. This place knows no winter nor cold but rather flowers, occasional rain and soft winds.

The people here leave peacefully as if the war had never happened.

And Amy she can find that here.

In the vast field of flowers, it's hard not to remember him. She could only think about how Shadow would like it here. As much of a 'gloom lord' he is, Shadow loves beautiful scenery. It reminds him of the things he wants to protect.

And on a very far away distance, she sees a figure that reminds her of him. For a second, Amy thought it was him. Chaos, she wished it was him. Instead, it was someone blue. Someone who had a special place in her heart a few years ago and he still does.

The blue blur.

"Has anyone seen Amy?"

Shadow walks into the offices of the Resistance to see if anyone has heard about the pink hedgehog.

"I haven't heard from her in five days and it's not like her to go non-verbal."

Rouge is surprised that Shadow took this long to realize Amy's absence. Of course, he was too busy with his new girlfriend to even notice. This slightly angered the white bat.

"Oh, so finally noticed?"

"Well, I noticed a couple of days ago but I thought she just wanted space."

Rouge rolls her eyes. How stupid can men be? She often doesn't ask this question to herself because the more she thinks about it, the more she becomes disappointed in them.

"Of course, because Amy is the type to want space," Rouge says sarcastically. "Just say that you were so busy with your new girlfriend that you didn't notice that Amy left town."

"What?"

The Resistance's HQ covers a pretty large area of land. Everyone has their own little jobs to do and most of the time everyone is deeply concentrated on doing such jobs.

But Shadow's voice was so loud for a second that everything went quiet. They looked at him for a second and Rouge felt a secondhand embarrassment.

They went back to do what they had to do. Rouge and Shadow just walk through the corridors, pretending Shadow did not talk so loud.

"Where is she?" Shadow whispers this time.

"Since I actually care about Amy, I went to Vanilla's Bakery and she told me Amy went on a small vacation," Rouge looks around the Resistance, she hopes she doesn't see Shadow's new girlfriend. "She should be back in a couple of days."

"Ah, I see. That's good, she needed a vacation," Shadow looks around the Resistance with the hope of seeing his girlfriend somewhere around. "I just wished she would read my messages."

Rouge loves Shadow, she really does. In the most platonic way possible, like an older sister loves her little brother.

But Chaos ... Was he dumb.

"Don't you think there might be a reason why she is not talking to you?"

"Because she is busy having a relaxing vacation?"

Rouge mentally face-palms her face, she just hopes that no one is close enough to hear Shadow talk like the dumbass he is.

"Or maybe, just maybe, she is distancing herself because she-"

Rouge couldn't even finish her sentence as Shadow left her side. From a distance she noticed him approaching his new girlfriend. Excitedly talking to her.

In her mind, she could only hope Amy gets over Shadow soon.

"When did you realize you had feelings for him?"

It was a bit strange for Amy to talk to Sonic about another hedgehog because it was well-known that she had the biggest and longest crush on him.

Regardless, is nice to have a friendly moment with him like this.

"This may sound dumb but," Amy pauses as she recollects her memory.

"It was a random day. Shadow was washing his bike and he looked so happy doing it ... I felt something in my heart. I just knew I had fallen for him."

"Just like that?"

Sonic asks as he also enjoys the company of the pink one and the view of the vast sea of flowers.

"Yes, just like that," Amy says. "He was doing something so simple, so I don't understand it myself."

"Love is a funny thing, isn't it?" Sonic is not an expert on the topic and feels a bit guilty that he couldn't provide Amy with some type of wisdom. "What do you plan on doing?"

"I am trying to have no contact with him for a while. Keep me busy... but in this place," Amy looks around and it's peaceful. Way too beautiful and everything reminds her of him.

"Well, there isn't much for me to do here."

Sonic then stands up and stretches his arms up in the sky.

"Then why don't you come with me?" he turns to look down at Amy. "Just for a while. Ya know, until you figure out what you want to do."

Before, Amy would be freaking out at the fact that Sonic was inviting her on an adventure. Now, she is unsure. She has responsibilities, something Sonic was not very fond of. Of course, he has responsibilities as a hero. But he is naturally good at it so it doesn't feel like a responsibility at all.

"I was supposed to only be out a couple of days and the Resistance-"

"The Resistance will be fine without you," Sonic interrupts her and he extends his hand, offering Amy to take it. "You need to worry more about yourself."

Amy smiles and holds his hand.

"Yeah ... I guess you are right."

.

.

.

"Hey, Amy, this my girlfriend-"

She didn't hear anything after that. She only could feel how her heart became heavier and the happier Shadow looked, a little bit of her heart shattered each time. But she puts up a smile and pretends to be the happiest person in the world. She feels like a hypocrite for saying things she doesn't mean.

"You guys look great together."

"Your girlfriend seems like a nice person."

"I hope you guys last for a long time, you two are meant for each other."

Amy sighs as she lets go of that memory. Her feelings are still there but less strong.

A month passed.

It was supposed to be just a three-day getaway vacation. But Sonic kept going on different adventures, seeing new places. The more Amy kept herself busy, the less she thought of Shadow.

She still likes him, a lot. But she knows that she has to let him go and try to be genuinely happy for him.

Or at least be emotionally stable seeing Shadow be close to his girlfriend.

The train had finally arrived at Sunset City. Amy's home and also known to have the most beautiful sunsets on the mainland.

She comes out of the train and the first thing she notices is the sunset behind her. It really is beautiful, with its blue, purple, pink and yellow sky.

How beautiful it is. Maybe if she starts paying more attention to the small details, she will be happier and forget faster.

She walks down the street with her suitcase as people pass by her. It's a Friday and people are out, wanting to have fun. But she can't wait to go home and have a nice sleep.

"Amy!"

She hears her name and looks around. Right in front of her, there is Rouge who is flying towards her. Amy ran towards her and they embraced.

"Hey, baby! I missed you so much!"

Rouge takes Amy's in her arms and flies around. Amy can't feel the ground for a few seconds. Softly Rouge puts her back.

"Where have you been!? We've missed you!"

Amy was aware that she didn't do very well in the communication department this past month. However, she did make sure to tell Rouge the necessary.

"I told you I went on a few adventures with Sonic, it was fun," Amy said as Rouge stopped flying and began to walk next to her. "It was good to ... Well, you know. Keep my mind busy and not think about him."

"Talking about him ... He is not very happy about how you didn't answer his messages," Rouge says. "Not like he cares too much, he is too busy making out with his girlfriend behind HQ."

The thought crossed Amy's mind and her heart felt heavy. Of course, she knew that it was going to happen at some point, after all, they are a couple. But she can't think about it without her heart feeling a certain way.

"I'll talk to him ... Certainly, I am not very excited to see him," After walking for a couple of minutes, Amy finally reaches the building of her apartment. "Hopefully his girlfriend makes him forget how 'angry' he is with me."

Amy looks inside the building, everything seems normal. People going in and going out. A few seconds passed and Rouge broke the silence.

"I am sorry," Rouge finally says as she holds Amy's hand. "I know how much you like him. He is just stupid for not being able to notice how amazing you are."

The pink hedgehog moves her head from side to side. She smiled at the beautiful bat and softly squeezed her hand to return the kind gesture.

"I was never going to confess and this was meant to happen at some point," Amy is proud of herself. At least she can talk about it now without having to cry.

"I just hope I can move on soon."

.

.

.

As Amy opens the door to her apartment, she is content to see that everything is as she left it. She stretches her body as she walks past her living room into her bedroom.

She turns on the light and she almost lets out a scream. But she quickly catches herself as she recognizes the figure resting on her bed.

"Shadow?!" Amy says exalted. "What are you doing here-"

"I told you before that you need to lock your window," Shadow slowly opens his eyes. "Anyone can break in if they wanted."

"That's not the point the point is-"

"The point is where were you," Shadow sits on Amy's bed, his vermillion eyes are intimidating. "And why didn't you respond to my messages?"

"I was on vacation," Amy wants to let out the part that she spent an entire month going on adventures with Sonic. "And I just wanted to alone time, to be away from everyone for a while."

"The Amy I know hates being alone," for some reason, Shadow didn't fully believe in her. Not believing in her is a first because he always does no matter what.

"I just needed some alone time, that's all," Amy says firmly Shadow just stares at her for a little longer, hoping to see if she would say something else. Anything that he can pick up to see whether she is lying or not.

But after a few seconds, he sighs.

"Don't do that again," Shadow says. "Or at least tell me. I was worried."

"You were?" Amy asks. This didn't match what Rouge was saying earlier.

"Of course, I wanted to look for you. But my girlfriend said that you might have gotten angry at me if I did that," Shadow says the word 'girlfriend' so easily and naturally. It makes Amy almost want to leave again.

She feels so pathetic. For thinking that after a month, she would have better control of her feelings.

"She's smart," Amy then moves her suitcase inside the room, moving away from the door. Hopefully, Shadow would get the hit and leave her apartment soon. "It's good that you listen to her."

"Yeah, but that didn't make me feel any less worried," Shadow goes back to resting on Amy's bed. Much to her dismay because all she wanted now was to go to her bed and sleep.

"I am sorry for making you worried, it won't happen again," Amy says. "But um, I am tired and I would like to get some sleep if you don't mind."

"Oh, yeah sure," Shadow just scooches a little bit to the right. "You can come now."

It used to be a thing for them to sleep and cuddle from time to time. But now that has to stop.

"I would like to sleep in my bed," she says.

"I am not stopping you," Shadow replies. "I am tired too and would like to sleep. Turn off the lights would you?"

"I would like to sleep in my bed ... Alone."

Amy looks at Shadow who stares back at her. He was definitely not expecting this. He wanted to say something but her seriousness showed that she wasn't in the mood to argue.

"Fine, I'll get going then," Shadow stands up and opens the window. He is ready to jump but looks back at Amy hoping to see some change in her decision. But nothing.

"Are you alright?"

"Yes, why?"

"I don't know, you look different," Shadow says. "I feel like you've changed."

Nothing really changed when Amy found out Shadow had a girlfriend.

All alright, that was a lie.

Amy wants to break down and tell him. Everything that she feels, her love for him. All the little things she finds perfect. He is beautiful, kind, and smart. Maybe a bit obvious but still gentle.

But that would be completely selfish of her. And she's trying to be better. For herself, for him.

She prays to Chaos, that these feelings for him will change.

"I hope I will."

A/N: I have an un-corresponded love so I decided to re-write this story as a way to cope with it.

Expect more ... very soon.
