Chp. 13 "Revelation"
Chp. 13 "Revelation"
I stared at Max, honestly confused, "What?"
"He's gone. He wasn't in English class and when I asked the teacher where he was he said he had transferred out of the system this morning."
I felt my heart hurt internally, knowing we would be on our own from now on. I shook my head, "You think it was because of yesterday?"
He shrugged, leaning back in the passenger seat, "I have no idea... but I don't think it's a good thing."
I shook my head, not responding because I didn't know what to say. Then I saw Max's eyes travel to Avery as he noticed she was in the back seat, "Why is she here?"
Ave huffed, "Well hey to you too."
I looked at Max, knowing I needed to tell him, "She saw."
I knew he knew exactly what I was talking about and his face changed to disappointment. He shook his head, raising his hands, "Didn't Blaine tell you just yesterday not to show anyone?"
I shrugged, "It was sort of an accident, besides, it's just Avery."
Then I felt her shove me in the shoulder, "Really, just Avery? You guys are making me feel so welcomed."
I started my car, "Please... Avery, you have no idea what you're getting yourself into."
"Are you going to kill me?"
I rolled my eyes, "No, for the second time."
"Then it's not a big deal, let's go."
I pulled out of the parking lot and down the street, heading towards the infamous spot Max and I knew so well. We haven't been there since my incident but I knew we should probably clean up everything we left.
Max sighed, "I forgot to tell you, my brother is coming in from college a little bit before we graduate. He's graduating to this year."
I knew Max's brother almost as well as I knew Max but I had completely forgotten about him. Max's family story is a bit complicated though, and lately I hadn't had time to think about anything other than what the hell I was going through.
Max had an older brother who was 22, his name was Gage Davidson and he and Max had the same father and mother. Their father died not to long after he moved here in a freak accident at work and it had crushed Max, but I was here for him. It was one of the many reasons he and I were so close, but it had taken a toll on him. His dad had also been able to control electricity like Max but Gage... well he never got lucky enough to develop any powers.
It was an odd case but apparently it had skipped over him and Max had been blessed with the powers, but Gage never was.
I looked at Max, "So you're gonna tell him about what's been going on?"
"If it gets serious enough."
Avery's voice joined in soon, "What are you guys talking about?"
I pulled up to the familiar door as Max got out and I sighed, "I'll explain everything if today isn't too much for you."
"I'm a big girl."
Then Max shocked the keypad and the door began opening and I looked back at Avery who was wide eyed in my back seat. I smiled, "So it's not too much?"
I drove into the lot as Max closed the gate behind us and I walked over to the generator Max and I always used. Avery was following close behind me as she whispered, "What's that for?"
I smiled, "You'll see."
I was trying to freak her out and I knew it was working so far. I saw Max studying the area around the giant magnet that had nearly killed me a couple of days ago and we joined him. Avery stood close to me, our arms touching as I felt her kind of lean into me. I glanced at her from my peripheral and smiled, looking back towards Max.
He pointed to the ground, "Look all that blood you left!"
He was right, there was a puddle of blood in the dried dirt as I knelt down and kicked the dirt around trying to hide it. Avery sighed, "That's... you're blood?"
I nodded, "Max and I had a little incident the other day."
I stood and looked at her, smirking slightly as she crossed her arms, "Are you trying to scare me?"
I shrugged, "I don't know, are you scared?"
"Getting there..."
"Do you want to see how I lit the bulb today in class?"
She nodded warily, not really knowing if she was prepared to witness this but she was the curious one. She had come back to me after the incident and I couldn't thank her more for it. I took her hand, "We're not going to hurt you Avery. Trust me."
The blood rushed to her cheeks as she squeezed my hand in response, "Oddly enough... I do trust you." Then she looked over to Max and sighed, "But I don't know about him."
I laughed, "He's nicer than you think, but he thinks exposing you to this isn't safe."
"So you and him have the same weird little ability to control electricity?"
I nodded, "Yes, it's a little hard to explain though."
She shrugged, "I doubt it. Anything else you can do that's extremely inhumane?"
I looked at her and tilted my head, "The other power might make you faint."
"You have two powers?"
I sighed, "I told you it's hard to explain."
"What's your other power?"
I smirked, "I can heal."
She squinted in confusion, not really comprehending what exactly I meant from that. She stepped closer to me, "Explain."
I looked at Max who was holding a glass bottle in his hand, and he knew exactly what to do. He broke it on a trashed car and walked up to me, bringing the sharp edge of the bottle along my arm. I gasped in pain along with Avery's panicked scream, "Why the fuck did you do that?!"
I moaned, "Look...Avery."
We both looked down at my deep cut, watching the two slits of skin bring themselves back together. The blood stopped coming out as I felt the familiar tingle throughout my arm. I wiped away the blood and Avery touched my arm, looking for the cut. She whispered, "Wow... So like, you can't get sick or anything?"
I shook my head, "Not that I know of, I've only had this power for a couple of days."
Then she was confused again and I knew if she was going to be in my life she would need to know my secrets and the whole story. I looked at Max, "Let's tell her everything."
He wasn't keen on it but he knew she wasn't a threat to us, "Fine, as long as she keeps it a secret."
She nodded, "I promise."
~ ~ ~ ~
So we sat there, explaining every little detail we could remember about Blaine's rant the other day. We told her about the BD3 disease and how it's killing people and how there is no cure yet. We told her about the Protection Bureau and the Federal Security guys that were trying to make invincible soldiers. We told her how they're trying to kidnap someone who can heal and make them to take over other countries and possibly the world. She had heard an earful and I knew it was a lot for her but she needed to know if she wanted to understand us.
And when we were done she looked at me in awe.
"So... they need you to find a cure to this disease?"
I nodded, "Yes, or possibly another Healer, but for now Blaine and I are the only ones that have been discovered."
"Wow... just... wow. This is so confusing and scary..."
I nodded, "You're telling me, I'm the one that the F.P.S. wants to kidnap and torture!"
"So... what are you guys waiting for? Start looking for this P.B.S.B. agency to help them find a cure to that disease!"
I felt both pairs of eyes on me, as if putting me out for the wolves. I didn't know where to start, and that would involve leaving home and going out into the unknown...
Max wanted to go now but we had lives here... but he wanted to find a cure just as bad as everyone else, if not more.
He was scared of this disease.
He sighed, "Andy... do you know why they call it the BD3 Disease, or in other words, the Sanguinea Influenza?"
I shrugged, "No? I don't speak science?"
He pulled out his phone, pulling up a News station and speaking, "You don't watch the International News, but they haven't shown this on the local news. It hasn't made its way down here but it's going to soon enough."
Soon a video was playing, and the normal usual symptoms were on the screen being narrated by a female voice. "Beginning symptoms of the BD3 Disease are extreme nausea and extremely high temperatures, causing visible perspiration on the host." Then the video showed someone lying in bed, their face pale with sickness as a cold rag was placed on their head. "Then after about a week and a half the host begins to shake involuntarily, resembling Parkinson's disease, and normal movements become difficult and painful."
The picture switched to the same person lying in the bed, they were paler than before and much frailer. They had lost an obvious amount of weight and their hands were shaking violently. "After two weeks the disease causes the whites of the eyes to turn a reddish yellow from blood building up and rising to any holes in the person's body. Blood begins to ooze from the ears, mouth, eyes, and nose. Extreme cases blood might ooze from pores and fingertips as well."
I cringed as they switched to a video of the same poor person, blood choking them in their mouth as he coughed up dark crimson blood. His eyes were almost completely red, not the reddish yellow the news lady had explained. He looked so in pain, so immobile, and so... sick.
The lady's voice came over one last time, "Then the host usually dies after about three weeks of contracting the BD3 disease."
Then the movie ended and I looked at Max, wondering how he could watch that without blinking an eye. He sighed, "Andy... BD3 stands for 'Bloody Death 3', 3 weeks to live after catching it. Sanguinea means bloody death in Latin for Christ's sake!"
Aver had been squeezing my hand the entire time we watched the clip and I knew she was just as scared as I was. We hadn't known about this, and I didn't think it was this bad...
And you only had three weeks.
"And it's only a matter of time before it makes its way down here Andy... then what?"
I knew I would be safe from it, nothing could kill me now... but to watch all of my family and friends die from this? How could I live with myself knowing I could've saved them?
Saved the world?
I sighed, "Do you remember what Blaine called me the other day? A Catalyst?"
He nodded, "Yea?"
"What does that mean?"
Max typed the word into a definition search bar and read out loud, "A Catalyst has many different meanings, but to sum it up here it is..."
He took a deep breath, "A thing or person that causes significant change in events."
And suddenly I understood who I was, and what I was meant to do.
