Memoire 55

Well boys, it's understandably another short one this time since mochijun has produced a lot of art this month outside the chapter. Still super interesting though.

First absolutely wild revelation is that Teacher has met Vanitas before. Vanitas doesn't remember this so he could have been anyone Vanitas has encountered. However, Teacher has never met Jeanne so he cannot be most of the characters we've seen before. I'm not sure there's any character we know that hasn't met Jeanne in some capacity off the top of my head actually. So it's unlikely we know the form Teacher is referring to in the first place. It definitely indicates a disturbing level of control on Teacher's part though, whatever he did/said to Vanitas last time probably pushed events towards this direction. He's playing a long game and very likely winning.

He confirms he's Misha's saviour incredibly nonchalantly, offering up the information cheekily when Noé asks him about it. From last chap it was pretty clear he was the saviour but nice to have it confirmed in words from the man himself.

Teacher calls himself the "Comte de Saint Germain." A real historical figure and alchemist. Interestingly the real Comte died during the late 18th century, meanwhile vnc takes place during the late 19th. So either Teacher is stealing the name of a dead man or the Comte doesn't exist in this world. The real Comte also went by a great many titles, linking him to Teacher, who we know frequently changes name to suit his mood. Literally just check this man's Wikipedia article, it's fascinating I swear!

Teacher picks up Misha to leave, kind of confirming that what made him step in was Misha's current state. I doubt Teach can afford to lose him here, and Misha probably couldn't have made an escape from the scene on his own.

The powers Teacher displays during this are kind of insane. First of all he seems to emit a similar kind of black miasma to Naenia, which also seems to outright warp the bottom half of his body. We've seen his body warped even more before (memoire 9) when he beheaded Louis as well. Though this definitely looks more Naenia-like than that did. Then there's the suspicious white flecks within his darkness, they look a little like Naenia's bubbles (though not enough that I think they are tank bubbles). It may instead be a world formula thing, though they don't appear as constellations like we're accustomed to.

He can also use his shadows to attack Noé and Vanitas. And it looks like he literally opened a crack in reality to leave with Misha. If I were to guess, maybe this crack leads to the barrier between Altus and regular Paris. His powers don't look anything like what we've seen from other vamps (possibly bar Naenia) so it's really interesting. Eyes are what link vampires to the world formula so I wonder if he has two separate powers, one from each eye, instead of the usual one speciality that most of the powerful vamps seem to have.

Teacher says stuff about a kingdom of dreams that confused me at first until I remembered Misha used those exact words to refer to the amusement park itself. So he's essentially saying "the amusement park has fallen." Though there can be a bit of a double meaning to that, especially when linked to his next words. I'd say that from this point on Teacher is done hiding and indeed believes everyone else at the amusement park is now "awake." From this point on they'll have to squarely face themselves and each other because they can't afford to do otherwise anymore. The future is coming no matter how consumed by the past they may be.

I think it's interesting we get two panels of Vanitas to represent the different kinds of "dreams." The gentleness of his found family and the nightmare of becoming the blue moon's kin though he vehemently rejected it. Why did mochijun show us these panels in particular? Am I to assume Teacher might know of these things? I suppose Mikhail could have told him. It's very likely this message is meant for Vanitas, even more than it is meant for Noé and Domi, hell, most of the talking Teacher does in this chapter is to Vanitas.

Jeanne notes that Teacher's left eye is the same shade of blue as Vanitas's. This is huge. That eye colour has been well established as unique to the blue moon clan. But Teacher himself isn't of this clan as far as we're aware, and I highly doubt he will ever be revealed as such. If he were, he'd be able to use the Books, and I doubt he'd need Mikahail at all if he couldn't function as a conduit of the Book. The left eye is also interesting because we have never seen Luna's left eye, it is in fact always covered with their hair. Can vampires steal each other's eyes? I will admit it doesn't look like Luna's eye, it's glassy and devoid of... well, anything. No pupil, no rings, nothing. But I still think there's a good chance Teacher plucked it from them, maybe also got the Books and blood of Vanitas for Moreau at the same time (yes this is a reach, sorry).

He also uses "Blue" as though it is a name. It might be, Luna is only a recent name by vampire standards and though most vampires called them Vanitas I van see this being Teacher's name for them. Besides that he calls them the most beautiful creature in this world which is really suspicious actually. What would a man like him consider beautiful? Did he make Luna? Were they potentially an alchemical experiment of his?

Noé passes out and I suspect we're going to get some flashbacks of his past considering how the chapter ended. We're finally going to learn about that conspicuous bandage on his eye that's been present for so long. While I'm being wild about eyes, if Teacher replaced one of his with Luna's would it be possible Noé had his replaced with Teacher's old one? Yeah  that's a pretty out there crack theory I admit. I'd expect Noé to be better at rewriting the world formula if he had one of the shapeless one's eyes.

Now, let's address the elephant - or, rather, the cat in the room. Teacher has dual coloured eyes and so does Murr. Could they be one and the same? I vote no. I think Murr is probably useful to Teacher and potentially a creature he can look through to observe events but I don't think he himself is the cat. Two main reasons: 1, Murr is incredibly cat-like. Teacher is getting way more into his role than he needs to and 2, we've seen Murr and Teach in the same panel before.  We also don't know what colour Teacher's other eye is, we only know he has a Vanitas blue one. Murr's eye does seem to be shaded pretty similar to Vani's though, even though his purple one looks distinct from Noé's.

Now, I want to say, Teacher did not have to do or say half the things that he did this chapter. There was no reason he had to engage anyone, he could have carried Misha off without a word. He clearly wanted to get in their heads (especially Vani's) and he succeeded pretty well. I'm not sure what the end goal of this is, Misha clearly failed his objective, though I'm sure Teacher got useful information anyway. This is clearly going to fuck with Vanitas, Domi and Noé a lot.

I mean, Domi knows her grandfather was okay with her dying. It could be argued that he wouldn't have let Vani or Noé die but he had no way of predicting Jeanne's arrival, he doesn't know anything about her. And it's pretty obvious why this would screw with Vani and Noé. Not to mention Jeanne still has negative context for anything that just went down, kudos to her for staying so relatively put together when dealing with all this.

Very good chapter, looking forward to the next one greatly.
