Chapter 7

We arrived at the apartment after a long hour ride. I got out of the car pulling a small suitcase along with me. I took a small breath and glanced up at the tall building. Around it was a cluster of other similar buildings which also probably belonged to the organisation.

The exterior look was like that of a hotel, light cream coloured while evoking a classy modern image. The building had at least twenty floors, all floors having sliding glass doors that led to a small, nice-looking balcony. Hmm, it would have been cool if I could get an apartment for myself here.

By the time I finished analysing the place where I'll temporarily be staying, the other three agents were already going inside. They either forgot the fact that they have to show me where I'll be staying or they did not care.

I dragged my suitcase and rushed to their side as we took the elevator. Cooky got off on the second floor while Shooky got out on the fifth one. Should I be following Castiel when he also gets off the elevator or not? He didn't tell me anything yet.

The elevator's door opened on the seventh floor and Castiel got out. I was going to open my mouth when I saw him taking my suitcase with him. I followed behind silently.

We reached an apartment with the number 66 on the door. He put my suitcase down beside the door. "Judy Winter. That's the name of the agent who has been assigned to protect you and with whom you'll be staying. Mr Ford thought you may be more comfortable with a girl to stay by your side."

With that said, he walked away, till the end of the hall and went in the last apartment to the left. I made a grimace as I stared at the door. Did I have to do this alone? That was so awkward, I thought as I knocked on the door. Anyway, since it was a girl, maybe she would be more friendly compared to the other scary-looking men, I reassured myself.

The door opened. I was going to say hello but I didn't get a chance as the girl simply left the door open for me to enter and walked away.

I walked in hesitatingly with a stunned face as my eyes followed the girl who went to the kitchen. She seemed quite tall, around 5'9 ft, with a black bob hairstyle. She seemed so intimidating, definitely older than me. Perhaps I had thought wrong; she had no friendly vibe.

I approached her and cleared my throat a bit. "Hi, I'm Haelyn Carter," I introduced myself while giving a tentative smile and offering my hand.

She was mixing something in a blender and glanced up at me for the first time. No smile of her face. She looked at me up and down, in a seemingly judging way and her eyes again returned to my face. "I know. Your room is to the left," she said and her eyes went back to the blender.

Okay, no handshake. My hand returned to my side awkwardly. I turned around, grabbed my suitcase and headed to my room.

I opened the door and entered. I put my suitcase near the bed and glanced around. The room was plain white and seemed bare, with only a bed, a wardrobe and a small table beside the bed. Anyway, it didn't matter since I'd stay here for only a short time, I hoped.

I opened my suitcase and took out the files I dumped in it, in a rush. I needed to get back to work now. I walked out of the room, closing the door and passed by the kitchen when I heard Judy speaking on the phone.

"-but I really wanted to go with the team back to Canada. Instead, I'm stuck babysitting someone who can't protect herself."

Oh...

Okay, don't be judgemental.

Don't be judgemental.

Don't be judge-

Wow, what a bitch.

With a sigh, I quickly passed by without her noticing. I got out of the apartment and headed to the elevator. I pitied her, really. She did not know the honour she got, for being the one chosen to protect me.

I planned to go to work but I ended up going to a burial instead; that of Argan Gregore.

After the autopsy was done, the body of Argan Gregore was handed over to a funeral home which took the responsibility of burying him.

Except for the funeral home workers and I, no one else was present. It was a bit surprising that no people came. I mean I thought there would at least be some family members or past friends that would come.

The only reason that I was present at the burial was to meet Argus. I heard that he was informed of the death of his brother so I thought that maybe I should talk to him about what happened to his brother.

So after the burial was finished, which included no funeral ceremonies at all, I stayed behind waiting for Argus. He was probably somewhere far since he seemed to be late. But then, Argan's death was informed to him yesterday itself.

I stood under a tree near the grave of Argan. I stared at his gravestone. It had only his name. His grave was bare, with not even a flower. Well, what a lonely death.

I  was unaware of how long I stood there until I heard my phone ringing. It was Eliyah.

"Are you still at the graveyard?"

"Yeah. I don't know why but Argus has not come yet. I called his phone but didn't get him."

"I was just informed that yesterday when they called him, they found out that he was using his friend's number here. His friend said that he was no longer in England but returned to Italy. So come back. You went there in vain."

"Why would he return after filing a case for his brother? A case that is still ongoing?" I asked confused. This did not make sense.

"I thought so as well. Maybe there was an emergency. Anyways, return soon. And Attorney Kim told me to pass his message to you: Stop wasting your time with useless things. It is still work hours," Eli said laughing.

I chuckled as well. "Tell him to get my new case ready then."

"Actually, from what I can see, there is a pile of files lying on your table right now."

He's too fast, I thought as I sighed.

♡♡♡♡♡♡♡

"Here, I bought coffee for you as well," I said as I handed it over to Eliyah and sat down.

"I can only see the tip of your head from that pile of files," Eliyah said and laughed after I sat down.

"Sharing is caring. Want some?" I said, popping my head out of the pile with a fake smile.

"Nah, I'm good."

Paperwork; the nightmare of all employees. I clapped my hands and took a deep breath.

"So where do I start?" I mused as I stared so lovingly at the files.

"Maybe with the drafting of the meeting procedures. Some are needed for tomorrow. They are all for this week's meetings. Then you can continue with the depositions and finish with the report preparations," Eliyah advised.

"Thank you! What would I be able to do without you, my saviour?" I exclaimed, my hands reaching out to her dramatically for effect.

I grabbed my laptop and the first file while discarding the rest aside. "I can't handle the sight of all these files. Half of them are not even for Attorney Kim. Am I being paid for these additional works?" I thought aloud.

"Actually, Eric has quit. So his workload has been distributed to some of us. You'll be paid for the additional work," Eliyah confirmed.

"You mean that's only a part of it? He has obviously been neglecting his work and now I have to bear his burden."

"Didn't you know? He actually was in love with Diana, you know the assistant from the other department? She's his ex, and he came here so as he can try to convince her to be back with him. Then, he found out that the reason she left him was that she found another boyfriend. He quit with a broken heart," Eliyah explained as she shook her head in sympathy.

"Oh, poor him...," I started, but then my eyes fell on the files, "but still, work is work. Work neglect is unacceptable and unprofessional."

I started working on the files right away. Seems like I would be stuck till late in the office itself today.

"I need the medical report of a past patient that was admitted at the Wellsworth Hospital. It concerns the drug case about which we'll have a meeting tomorrow," informed Attorney Kim, while flipping through the papers I prepared.

It was already evening. After hours of typing, I finally finished my work for the day. Or maybe not, from what I just heard.

"So, I need to go to the hospital? Because from what I saw, there was no official medical report in the file," I said.

"Yes. And keep it with you and bring it tomorrow when you come to work." Phew, at least!

I got in my car and threw my bag in the seat beside me. I hoped that I won't have to wait for hours like in my past experiences.

I started the car and drove at a leisurely pace. I was in no hurry to go to my new place. It didn't have a friendly vibe. I wished I could have stayed with Eliyah instead though it would be awkward sometimes since Brian often came over at her apartment.

I parked my car and got out after searching for the file I needed inside my bag, or the black hole to be more specific.

I entered the hospital and went directly to the administrative office.

"Good evening. I need the medical record of a past patient called Samuel Johns," I said showing the employee the necessary papers.

He nodded and went on his computer while he asked another employee to go fetch a file.

"It will take a few minutes. You can wait outside," he informed me. I thanked him and went out.

As I waited outside, I saw a nurse passing by and smiling at me. It was the nurse whom I talked to the last time I came here. I returned her smile.

"We meet again. Are you here for that case about which you asked me the other day?" She asked as she approached me.

"No, actually it's no longer my case. It has been transferred to another team. I'm here for some papers I needed for another case," I replied.

"Oh. I wanted to say something about the previous case but maybe it does not matter now. Anyway, good luck with your job," she said as she turned to walk away. But of course, I could not let her walk away.

"No, wait! Tell me what you want to say. Maybe it could be useful information. I'll relay it to the people that are responsible for the case now."

"Actually it's no big thing. I just wanted to say that, last time you asked me to identify a man from that photo, right? But after that day, I saw him only once at the hospital."

Oh...interesting...

"But you said he works at the hospital, right?"

"That's what I concluded since I had seen him a few times in male nurse clothes. I thought maybe he was a new one here. I saw him for the first time only a few weeks ago. So I could have been wrong as well. I'm not sure."

"Thank you for the information. It'll be very helpful.  I'll inform those responsible for the case."

She nodded and walked away. As for me, I was drowning in my imagination and theories. More investigation should be done on that guy. After all, wasn't he the one whose car I chased till we reached an abandoned building with dead bodies? Or was it the other one? There were initially two men involved on the day that Argan disappeared.

Just then, I saw Dr Martinez passing by and entering the administrative office. Oh, my luck!

I heard him asking one of the employees to get some papers ready. I stood by the door waiting for him. As he stepped outside, he took a step back surprised when he saw me.

"Hello again, Doctor," I said grinning as I leaned against the wall in a casual manner.

"I thought we were to not cross paths again. Really, I don't have any time for you," he said with a grimace.

"Oh, no need to fret. I'm not here for you. But anyway, how you been, Doctor?" I said with a seemingly polite smile. On the inside, I was cackling. I don't know why but I liked getting on the nerve of some people. People that tried to shove their attitude in my face.

He didn't answer and just stared at me.

"Oh, you won't talk? It's okay, I talk enough for two," I said and shrugged.

"You heard about the case, right? You must have seen or heard it if you keep updated with the news. Argan Gregore was found dead," I said and waited for him to react.

He merely shrugged and said, "Well, that's unfortunate. I wonder what kind of gang-related activities he fell into to have died like this."

"What do you mean?" I asked as I straightened up my posture.

"He had stimulant drugs trafficked inside the prison which he used to take. These were the cause of his heart attack. So if he ran away back to the gang that supplied him with the drugs or ended up in some bad situations, he had only himself to blame."

"And how did you come up with these assumptions? Are you sure you don't know anything?"

"It seems like you're doubting me, Miss Carter. But your doubts are groundless while my assumptions are solely based on what I know. He was a prisoner and drug addict whose case almost harmed this hospital's image. And he died outside of the hospital in God knows what situation. He's of no concern to me now."

"We'll see about that, Dr Martinez. Because it seems to me that there may be something fishy here. For now, I can only doubt. However, try to hold onto your dear hospital's image while I gather the necessary evidence," I said. What was I rambling about? That case ain't even mine.

He rolled him eyes and was about to retort back when he was interrupted.

"Dr Martinez, aren't you supposed to be going for the scheduled surgery right now? Your team is waiting for you," I heard from behind Dr Martinez.

I glanced behind him. It was another doctor. He must be in his mid-thirties. He was wearing a white coat over his doctor scrubs and had blond hair slicked back.

"Yes. Someone insignificant held me back. I'll be going. Take the papers that we needed from here later," he said and quickly walked away towards the operation unit.

I rolled my eyes and looked away as I continued waiting. But the doctor in front of me didn't walk away. I looked at him with a questioning face.

"You're Haelyn Carter, the one who was investigating on a case here? Martinez mentioned it," he said with a smiling face.

"Yes...and who are you?"
