Bryn Hafer - Task Four

User: CraZCanuck

It comes as no surprise to me that people died at the dance. 'People are dying no matter where they go at the moment...' I huff out a deep breath. At least I'm somehow still alive.

I slink down the nearly abandoned halls of the school, whole body tense and on-edge. I hate walking alone, but I don't trust anyone else enough to want to walk with them.

But once again, the cops are calling me back down to the office for an interrogation. The closer I get to the office of the school's remaining faculty, the higher the police presence present. And every single one has a hand on a handgun, the other on their tasers. I suppose they're finally smartening up to the fact that whoever this killer is, is doing a damn effective job. Nearly everyone's dead.

And they haven't a clue who it is.

"What's your business here?" a gruff voice asks me as I approach the office. I roll my eyes.

"Come on, officer. You heard the intercom call me down here a minute ago and you know it." He sighs.

"I know that, kid... But I try it on everyone, seeing if anyone'll panic and reveal themselves. Go on in."

I creak open the door, to reveal Detective Jones again.

"Well, well. Bryn Hafer. So, you're still alive, huh?"

"Yeah, suppose I am... For how long, I wonder...?" The detective rubs his temples, thinking deeply as he ponders.

"I want to know something... If you were a killer, why would you do it? What would the point be?" I shrug my shoulders, wondering if this is some sort of test. Wouldn't put it past him.

"I dunno. Most do it because of some sort of drive. Whether it excites them, or makes them feel alive... They all have their reasons, and we may never know what makes them tick..."

"Have you ever considered becoming a cop?" he inquires with a sly smirk. "You've got the mind for it, give you that much..."

"Not recently," I admit. "Been focused on not dying, but thanks..."

"Wasn't an offer, just a joke," he says, chuckling softly. "For real, though. Why are you alone? We recommended that everyone walk in groups."

"Groups have been dangerous so far, if you don't mind me saying."

"Solitude hasn't done much better..."

"I'll take my chances."

The detective finally stands up.

"Bryn, I'm going to say this flatly. There aren't many people left in this school. And one of them is the murderer. So I have to ask you something. Where did you go after the dance? Your date claims that you just sort of disappeared after, without a trace." I raise an eyebrow.

"I'd prefer you not use the word 'trace' at this point. Bad luck. But for real, I went back to my room. Barricaded with furniture to keep the killer out."

"Why barricades? You know that if they want in, they'll find their way in. They'll pound your door in, or choose a window or an air vent. These people will do anything to capture their prey.

"True. But why make it easy? If I'm going to die, I plan on taking this psychotic brat out with me."

He finally sighs. "Alright, Bryn. Be careful. And please, try to walk in pairs at least. You seem like a good kid. Don't go off and die." When he stands and opens the door for me, I get up out of the cushioned chair and push it in before walking out, once again an animal preparing for predators.
