The Exquisite Truth
i was at camp so sorry for the late update🤗
...I hear an inhuman noise coming from somewhere in the vent. It almost sounds like a scream...
Oui where I left yah
I freeze and stop slithering at the instant. The temperature drops around me as goosebumps appear. After hearing the piercing scream again I decide to follow the sound and abandon the read paint to see where it leads. Every push, pull and drag I make is careful and silent. All that practice from creeping up on my prey in District 12 with Gale did me well.
I see light after a while. It's coming from an air vent that is attached to a room. With one last heave I make a move again and come to the corner of the small vent and take a glance.
The room is completely whitewashed and there are people with screens and a big empty space that is showing a hologram in the middle. The people are all around the hologram and are watching it intensively. It looks like the room where the Gamemakers would control the Arena in the games.
I gasp in horror as I watch it. There is a woman who might be around her twenties with red and brownish hair. She's being tortured by Peacekeepers. They whip her and beat her and she screams in pain and agony. Her body twists and looses control with every blow. She's becoming a bloody mess. After she's close to death they leave her to crumble on the floor. I stand in shock and fear. The Capitol does these kinds of things to people. And claim that they're so amazing and magnificent with they culture and couture.
As I decide to head back I see Thread enter the room with President Snow. They stand and watch as the hologram changes and some doctors come and put the poor woman on a stretcher and start cutting into her skull, not even bothering to wipe all the blood away and tend her wounds.
Snow smiles at the sight of the hologram and exclaims in a booming voice,
"Today is a grand day for us and our new experiments. After a couple of misfortune trials we have finally been able to complete the Ditine Demolishment."
Everyone in the room claps and there are whistles and occasional whoops. I just stare in disbelief. All these people are proud of what, torturing others?
After looking at the woman I notice that she is Annie Cresta. The winner of the 70th games. Her District partner's head was chopped off in front of her and she lost her sanity. After that there was a severe earthquake and the whole Arena was under water and flooded. Being the only remaining Tribute of District 4, she survived by swimming while the remaining drowned.
If the Capitol is making its way up to the Victors I won't be far behind of the list.
I was wrong. Winning the games wasn't the end. It was just the beginning. It's not over, it never was.
Suddenly read lights start to blink in the control room and everyone starts screaming and rushing to the door where Snow and Thread left as soon the alarm came along with the lights.
I slither back my way through the vents, this time not caring about being silent. Something's wrong and I need to get out of here. It's exactly like the birds down in the mines. When they stopped singing you were a goner.
I push the memories of my father away. It's not the time to be emotional now. My feet fall into a space and my head comes out later. I'm back in my room. I quickly change into something more suitable and brush my hair and wash my face. Did I mention that there was a lot of dust there? I sit on my bed and pull out a book from my suitcase. It's a biography of the past Victors of the games. After reading about Augustus ( augustus braun is a victor from district one and not from my imagination, you might've not heard from him cause he isn't featured in the books) I see the next biography,"Johanna Mason"
I take one look at her savage face and shut my book. I'm still terror stricken. The Capitol is up to something. What is this Ditine Demolishment? Why are they using the past Victors as their lab rats? The idea itself chills me to my bones and I need to clear my head. Maybe a stroll in the garden might help. I need some help with finding it though. This place is huge.
I step outside and ascend down the left corridor. The air smell queer. Almost like smoke. (Quoting ASOUE and Lemony Snicket: where's there's smoke, there's fire.
My senses are alive as can be as I crouch to the ground for more oxygen. Crawling I reach a window and jerk it open. What I see is as terrifying as the torture of Annie Cresta. The whole rose garden and front court is engulfed with flames.
The fire is also climbing the walls of the mansion. In half an hour the whole mansion could burn to the ground. The bottom ground is already turning to ashes. The whole building shakes and creaks in an unsteady manner. I shake and duck back down. Prim and Madge pop up into my mind. They could be burning or stuck in the fire anywhere at this minuet. I need to go find them. Now.
More smoke is pouring in from the window I opened. I get on my knees and literally crawl as fast as I can.
I cough and cough and my eyes get watery as I intake the vicious smoke that pours into my lungs. I see someone run up to me as I fall to the floor suffocating. The person runs to me and places an oxygen mask on me shaking me up. I inhale the sweet sweet oxygen and cough. I can make out the person now. It's Peeta, it's always Peeta anyway.
"I'm so glad that you're safe, I need to get you out of here right this instant."He exclaims and I notice that he has no mask of his own and I struggle to take off mine to give it to him.
He takes my hands and pushes them down. "I don't need one, I thought you'd know?" He looks at mw with confusion and picks me up. He may look like a weakling but he must be strong in order to cradle me like an infant.
"I- I strayed from the path and saw some other things. I'm sorry." After my heaved out sentence a coughing fit decides to pay me a visit.
"It's alright we'll talk about that later." He runs down the corridors and I ask him,
"Are Prim and Madge safe? Out of the fire? Are they-" Peeta cuts in,
"They're alright. They were actually the first to be rescued. The fire department decided that the fire was too out of control to handle. They're going to let the building burn to ashes. The Victors were saved and I'm saving you." He pants and keeps running from the corridors.
"How come you don't need an oxygen mask?" I exclaim.
"I'm a-" Suddenly the ceiling comes crashing down with fire, burning like a fireplace. Peeta jumps back and I scream. He turns back and takes the other corridor. The Fire meanwhile spreads from the ceiling to the carpet and follows us slowly.
As if it means to say," You can run but you cannot hide." Peeta dashes from other rooms to various hallways and I start to loose my consciousness.
I hear Peeta say,
"I'm going to... jump out of this... wrap your arms around me tightly..." I nod my head and wrap my arms around his waist from what I understood and I fall into blackness. My life at Peeta's hands.
Nawt much of a cliffhanger but yea.
