Awkward

"You're Dank," I said nonchalantly while pointing at a confused Jacen.

"Who's Dank?" Jacen asked with his calloused hands stuffed into his khaki pockets.

"Well, as of right now, it's you. But I recovered the name from one of my many paranormal romance books. Considering the fact that my life is now one of those stories, you, my friend, are now Dank."

I looked him up and down. "Although Dank was always a lot cuter in my head," I mumbled.

Jacen leaned his head towards mine, his eyes narrowed into two slits playfully. "What was that?" he asked with a hand behind his ear.

I waved him off with an easy smile, setting my Vera Bradley bag down next to me. I pulled my sunglasses from my bag, and placed them over my dry eyes. I felt small droplets of sweat that trickled down my face as I stood in the surprisingly blistering heat.

I put a little space in between myself and the unofficially formed group I was standing with, one that consisted of The Four members, Joney, Axle, and I. It was a weird combination, but we were constantly working on smoothing out the rough edges.

Anyways, it was uncertain on whether or not I smelled better that a sewer, so some distance was a win win for everyone. I got to protect my already struggling ego and everyone is allowed to keep his or her sense of smell.

"So why am I Dank? Why not-" Jacen paused and looked next to him, his brown hair flopping slightly. "Finn?"

Finn looked up from his side conversation to Jacen's tall figure and shook his head. "Oh no Jace, didn't you hear? I was already given a sucky character name-" I cut him off immediately once hearing that.

"It's not a character, it's real life! Also, it's not a sucky name! It's normal. In fact, don't we have a guy named Jay in our grade?" I looked around trying to match a face to what I remembered about the guy, albeit not much.

My focus switched back to Finn when I heard him grumbled, "Yeah, he didn't let me copy his History homework."

I rolled my eyes. I guess that explains why he doesn't like the name. Though, it's not a very good reason. "You'll thank him eventually, you know, once you get into college."

He scoffed. Axle walked up in that moment, holding our room key. "Ready?" I nodded, and made my way closer to the group again to pick up my bag.

"We'll meet you guys at the pool, okay?" I asked as I began to walk off once seeing collective nods.

Axle and I made our way into the beautiful hotel, and I looked around in awe as I pulled off my sunglasses. "Wow," I breathed out.

"What, you've never been to a hotel before?" Axle asked as we stopped and waited for the next available elevator. There was a lot of commotion going on around us as the other students pushed and shoved to get on the elevators.

Some poor souls were trampled by the constant mob of converse and flip flops, but I hardly acknowledged it as I continued to look around. "Never one this nice," I admitted.

Axle nodded as we began walking onto the newly opened elevator, making, or more like forcing our way into a corner. I believe the maximum number of people that can safely fit on an elevator had been breached, and that wasn't including the jock's and cheerleader's luggage.

I think it's safe to say that I was highly uncomfortable having one of the cheerleader's cosmetic bags stabbing my inner thigh, and another's bony hip digging into my side as she smacked nauseatingly sweet gum near my face.

I looked up at Axle since my head was the only thing I was capable of moving. He grinned devilishly down at me as we both reached an uncomfortably close proximity. He jerked suddenly against me pushing me roughly into the person behind me, and I looked up at him to see his eyes shut tightly. Confused, I continued to stare.

I then looked down once I felt movement near my stomach. I baby barfed in my mouth as I realized what was happening between the girl next to me and Axle. I wanted to gouge my eyes out as well as I saw the same cheerleader who had been smacking the gum looking up at Axle with a smile.

It wasn't just her smile that bothered me, although it was fake as hell. It was why she was smiling that made me want to burn myself alive. Her annoyingly manicured hand was down by his crotch, and not even in a subtle way.

Her hand was in his pants. He tilted his head back and parted his lips, as I tried to look anywhere but him.

People wondered why I loathed elevators.

When I couldn't take any more uncomfortable movement rubbing against my own torso, I threw the cheerleader's arm back to her, miffed.

She scowled at me, annoyed from being interrupted, and shot Axle a look that she must've assumed was cute, although it was far from. I made a mental note to wash my hands once I got into our hotel room. I looked back up at Axle in disgust to see him already looking down at me.

"Well hello there." He said with a husky voice. I shivered, unfornately knowing the reason why it was like that. A harsh shove from behind me forced me forward, shooting me away from Axle, and a subtle cough was heard. I turned around, and came face to face with Jacen, who I hadn't even realized had gotten in the elevator with us.

I shot him a dirty look as he looked at me innocently and his focus switched to Luke who was standing behind him. I chuckled to myself, as I realized that he had unconsciously saved me from having to stand next to my man-whore of a roommate for one more minute.

When we finally arrived at the tenth floor, I pushed my way through the groaning and smelly teens, and landed on the carpeted safe haven. "Never again," I spat at Axle, out of breath as I stood up.

He looked down at me, looking placid as he slung his bag over his shoulder with a light shrug. "Suit yourself. Have fun walking down ten levels of stairs though."

"Oh trust me; anything would be better than another elevator ride with you."

We walked to our room and opened the door. I immediately shoved past Axle, determined to get to the bed closest to the window first. However, he quickly caught on, and as I was in mid air, he snatched me away from my intended target, and softly tossed to the ground right next to it.

So close.

"Axle!" I yelled angrily. I really wanted that side of the room!

"Zaph!" He mocked as he threw his black duffle bag on the bed I wanted. He tossed my bag down to the side of me after that. I got up and rammed into his side, shock registering on his face from the force. We both went toppling onto the bed, both of us fighting to get the upper hand. I pushed him over more, almost completely flipping him off of it.

I proceeded to starfish, holding on to the sides of the bed for dear life. I dug my fingernails into the sheets, and curled my toes, so much that I felt as if I had already won. Axle jumped off, and went to the bottom of the bed. He grabbed my ankles, and pulled. The sound of the sheets rubbing against my skin from the friction of the pull was enough to let me know that I was quickly losing my advantage.

I was panting as I continued to hold on, tears coming to my eyes from wanting this bed so badly. "I want the bed!" I screamed as him as I thrashed around in an attempt to get him to release his vice-like grip on my ankles.

"Well sucks because so do I," Axle grunted as I kicked him a little too close to home for his comfort. I released one of my hands that had begun to lose blood and grabbed a fluffy pillow. I chucked it at him blindly from my position facing the tall wooden beams.

All of a sudden he stopped. I looked up from a face full of suffocating hotel sheets slowly, scared to assume anything too swiftly. Of course, I was right, because not two seconds after everything stopped, an unnaturally heavy force weighed down on my entire body.

I had just exhaled a millisecond before Axle had landed on me, so actually had no air left to use. I felt sorry for all the little insects I have ever mercilessly crushed beneath my feet on the pavement, because I was now one of those insects, and Axle's body was my shoe.

I flailed wildly, trying to give him a signal that I couldn't breathe, but he just added more weight, which was something I was really unappreciative of. I could feel his hot breath on my ear, and could smell the orange trident gum as if wafted up my nose.

"Ready to give up yet?" He asked tauntingly in my ear. I whimpered in response as he continued to pin me to the bed.

"What is going on here?" An angry voice said near us.

Uh-oh.

Axle quickly rolled off of me, and I greedily took in several gulps of much needed air as my head shot towards our door. Jacen was standing in the doorway with his swim trunks on with his muscular arms up against the door frame.

He was looking at Axle with a hatred that made me squirm eventhough the look wasn't directed at me.

Through clenched teeth he spat, "I will kill you, you son-"

"Jacen!" I yelled, cutting him off as he began to walk threateningly towards Axle.

He did not have permission to barge into my room ad start going off on people. What happens in my room, stays in my room, and if you aren't a part of it then don't try to become a part of it.

"What?" He snarled at me. I was taken aback, and my leg connected with the back of the mattress as I retreated in shock. However I quickly regained my normally unbreakable stability, and marched up to him.

I pointed to the door that he left wide open. "Get out right now."

Jacen attempted to take a step around me, but I pushed against his chest, stopping him in the process of ignoring me. "I said get out Jacen."

"Where did you even come from? Quit popping up in random places and trying to fight anyone that says something bad about me or is within two feet of me, both of you!" I yelled as my eyes travelled dizzyingly back and forth between the two boys.

I looked back at a panting Jacen, who was closer to me than before. "Did he hurt you?" He asked softly. I rolled my eyes.

"We were just messing around, geez! Am I allowed to have fun every now and then, or are you going to keep me on a leash for the rest of my life?" I asked annoyed.

I was fine. After I had regained normal regulations of respiration that Axle had so kindly taken away from me, I felt perfectly normal.

"I was just making sure you were ok is all," he said, looking a little embarrassed. I sighed.

I didn't mean to get angry, but I was getting tired of both Axle and Jacen having exceedingly high levels of testosterone around me.

Yeah, it was hot, I won't lie about that. But it was still annoying.

I got closer to him. "I'm fine, I promise." I smiled a little as his lost boy look as I ruffled his hair. I then proceeded to turn him around and shove him out of the door he had suddenly barged into, shutting it immediately after.

I turned back around towards Axle, grabbing my swimsuit from my bag and avoiding eye cotact.

"Mhmm, yep. Definitely have me fooled; it's not obvious at all."

I turned and entered the bathroom, the door being the only thing keeping my hands from enclosing Axle's meaty neck within them. I washed my hands thoroughly like I said I would, and washed them again just to make sure all traces of nastiness were gone.

When I walked back out, Axle was lounging on the bed closest to the window, his stuff already scattered disgustingly across the floor.

Douchebaglet.

The sun was beaming down on me body hard but I didn't mind. The weather was nice, and every now and then there was a gentle breeze that helped me hold on to my sanity. With closed eyes, I could feel the light cool mist of the water as my classmates jumped into the refreshing crystalline pool.

I could pick up lighthearted conversations about the latest boys in some of the other girls' lives and what not. The boys were all hooting and making noise in the pool, some groaning after losing the water football game they had been playing since I had walked down.

Joney was sitting to the left of me with her headphones in, her music up loud enough for me to here. I reached over blindly yet carefully for my lemonade that was perched on the table next to me.

As I pulled it up to take a sip from the beautiful creation known as the bendy straw, an extremely rough slap to my stomach cause me to spill some of my lemony goodness on myself.

My eyes shot open at the cool liquid hitting my stomach, but the lemonade was quickly forgotten about as I felt myself being lifted up. Axle ran towards the pool with me in his solid grip. I was fighting with all the strength I had to get out of his hold as he jumped off of the pool ledge, but I couldn't.

So the two of us, making a giant splash, were instantly surrounded by frigid water. I spluttered as I broke the surface, pounding on Axle's chest at the same time.

"You, jerk," I said in between breaths. He held onto my hips as I felt his whole body start shaking. He was laughing.

This guy in front of me was actually laughing.

I wiped my eyes of the collected chlorinated water on my eyelids and blinked to look at him. "What the heck are you laughing at?" I questioned incredulously.

"You look like a wet dog."

I scowled at him, pushing myself out of his grasp and making my way to the shallow end's edge. "Why thank you Axle, I truly appreciate the compliment." I shivered as my skin met the gentle breeze of the Florida wind.

I grabbed a towel from off of one of the nearby racks, about to encase myself in it when I heard my name being called.

"Yeah?" I looked back at Axle whose cheeks looked flushed in the water. He smirked as his eyes lit up with mischief as he cuffed his hands around his mouth.

"I think you just started you period. I'm not sure though, so you might want to take a look and check!" He yelled from across the pool.

Ever heard a loud room instantly go silent? Well that's exactly what had just happened, except we were outside, and it seemed as if even the cars on the interstate next to us had stopped.

I stood frozen in place from what Axle had just yelled for everyone to hear. You've got to be kidding me.

I slowly looked down, and sure enough, soaking through my white swimsuit was a dark liquid. I bit my lip in mortification, as I just stood, dripping, by the pool. The majority of the people by the pool turned their heads to look at Axle and then at me.

Joney quickly came up to me and wrapped my petrified body in the towel I had picked up. She guided me back to where I had originally been sitting, as whispers erupted around me. Joney kept talking to me and finally, I gave her a response.

I laughed.

It wasn't just a cute little giggle either; it was an all out, snort filled laugh. Tears collected at the base of my eyes from laughing so hard as my abdomen began to cramp.

Joney gave me a weird look. "Are you alright Z?" She asked me cautiously, as if expecting me to have a mental break down any second now.

I tried to conjure up words in between my ugly howls but I just couldn't. I smiled harder than I had in a while as I clutched the towel around me tighter.

This is what high school is right? It's all a part of being who you are to have those embarrassing moments correct? Was I the only one who seemed to understand that?

Every day I walk around school, and when I am not talking to Joney I am listening to people complain about the simple and very human mistakes they make. Making mistakes is the definition of being a teenager, and if I ended up being the only one that grasped that, that truly realized that, then so be it. It was more fun to let loose than to worry about every little thing you do.

I just know that I have a damn good story to tell my kids one day.
