The car ride from my college campus to Johnson Lake was anything but exciting. It wasn't terribly far away, though it wasn't any short lived trip. The only company I had was my radio, the rumble of the car, and the sound of my own breathing.
I turned the radio up a few bars, hearing Britney Spears's "Toxic" through a bit of static. Blinking, I turned it up louder. Though the song was not incredibly old, it had been a while since I had last listened to it. I drummed my fingers on the steering wheel to the rhythm, feeling rather nostalgic.
The familiar sign that declared Johnson Lake eight miles away came into my view as the song faded out. Justin Beiber's "Sorry" began playing, and out of mere instinct, I changed the station to country. "Elvira" by Oak Ridge Boys was playing, and I decided that anything was better than Beiber at this point.
Soon, I was parked in the driveway of my grandparents' cabin. I unbuckled my seatbelt, climbing out of my car. Before getting my bags out of the trunk, I thought I should greet my grandma and grandpa.
I opened the sliding door on the porch, calling out, "Grandma? Hey, grandma?" I shut the door behind me and looked around. The furniture, as always, was clean and mostly teal-colored (due to my grandma's taste).
An eerie silence meets me instead of a relative. I swallow a bit, peering into the kitchen. The lights flicked on as I hit the switch. I had only then noticed that no lights were on. My grandparents had obviously left. I saw a sticky note posted on the fridge, and I peeled it off, reading it.
We had to leave early, as we did have to catch a plane, after all! Sorry Jaime. We'll be back in two weeks and if you aren't gone by then, well... We'll give you a hug and ask you to leave politely. Ha ha!

I smiled at what my grandmother would've called humor. Shoving the note into my jean pocket, I walked back outside to get my bags.
About an hour had passed, and I had settled in. I was upstairs, in the guest bedroom, even if my grandparents suggested I sleep in their room. I lay on the soft bed, staring up at the ceiling fan. As any imaginative person would, I began thinking.
"Hmmm. I wonder how Niles is doing..?" I asked aloud, my thoughts quickly drifting to one of my classmates. We both majored in musical theatre, so we got to know each other fast. And I mean very fast. We're roommates.
Niles was a year or two older than me, and his height showed that. It wasn't too hard to think that we were a whole six inches apart. He had tawny-beige skin, and hair like fluffy chocolate that ended at his shoulders if it wasn't tied up.
You could consider Niles the hipster type, normally sporting a black beanie and 3D glasses you get at movie theaters, but with the special lenses popped out.
After pondering his well being, I decided to call him. I grab my phone from the side table, dialing his number. The flip phone (yes, I have a flip phone) rang out a few times before I could hear a cheery, "hellooo?"
That was Niles, alright. "Hey Niles. I made it to my grandparents' house." Sitting up from my bed, I looked over the pile of stuffed animals that my grandma arranged by color. "Neat," Niles chirped, "I really have nothing to do on breaks... You're lucky- you basically get a beach house for fourteen days, free of charge."
I roll my eyes, sighing, "unfortunately, there's not much of a beach." An idea crossed my mind. "Hey, do you think you could make the drive up here? I dunno. My grandparents said I could bring a friend, and I told 'em I'd think about it..." You could practically hear Niles perk up.
"Eh, why not? I know where Johnson is." A grin spreads across my face. Even if I wanted some alone time, it would be nice to have a friend with me to enjoy the nice weather. "Cool, I'll see you in a bit then."
An hour, maybe two passed.
The moment he arrived, strange things started happening.

I'm a crappy writer, I know. Though I'm planning for some...interesting things to go on in this. This is partially based on times I've gone with my family to my grandparents' cabin. Hopefully it'll be interesting enough to continue with.
