[*] Three
There are some books we read and feel as if we have lived a thousand lives. Let me tell you something; there are also some people we meet who make us live a thousand lives.
They are so diverse and unique.
But they are very rare. If you were to take a magic lantern and search them in this universe, you still might not find them because finding them doesn't require magic but the purity of our hearts and the willingness to understand.
Bull...
I was going to find him and I was going to kill – Hehe, just kidding! I wasn't going to 'kill' him. I was just going to 'get to know him more'.
Yes.
And this was the very motivational factor that made me follow him when I saw him pass by my locker in a hurry.
Note: I did follow him but after two minutes of debating inside my mind.
I followed him and at first I thought I lost him but then there he was standing at the end of a staircase, looking down and talking to a girl.
Ooh la la!
Ahem...excuse me. That-That was totally unnecessary. My apologies.
Moving on.
I stood there and looked on very interestingly. My curiosity got the best of me. The girl appeared somewhat shy because she seemed to be staring at the floor whereas Bull was looking at her with full interest and attention. They appeared, to me, like 1920s lovers. You know, the girl shying away and blushing whereas the man looking at her eagerly. Yup.
Bull asked her, "You feeling better?" The voice he used was so different from all the voices I heard of him. It was creamy and cheesy. Carefully coming out of his mouth like white shiny pearls slip out of a necklace.
The girl slowly nodded. Bull seemed relieved.
She then slowly shook her head and looked up at him. "I-I don't know what I would have done if..." She choked on her words as tears formed in her eyes.
"Hey, if they are the reason you are so distressed then don't be 'cause I took care of them." Bull said sympathetically. "I promise they won't come near you again."
After steadying her breath, the girl continued. "I never meant for you to get involved....I-I am so sorry...It's just...I don't know what to say."
"It's none of your fault. I got involved myself, okay? Don't blame yourself." Bull had the 'Oh, palease' look on his features.
The girl suddenly coughed, alarming Bull. He quickly took out his water bottle from his backpack and offered it to her. She took a few sips and regained her composure. Bull looked visibly distressed as his eyebrows frowned upwards. The girl meant to return his bottle.
"No, please keep it." Bull insisted. He then, after a moment of hesitation, got down to her level and whispered something. I moved in closer to eavesdrop.
"Umm, I don't mean to put my nose in your matters but..." He thought for a second. "You should really take care of yourself and the one inside you."
The one inside her?
"It can be really harmful for the both of you if you keep ignoring your health." Bull nodded towards her in a 'do you understand what I am saying?' manner.
The girl nodded and cast her vision down.
"Err...If you don't mind me asking...Have you told your parents about it?" Bull went on. The girl looked at him with a tired expression. "Y-You don't have to tell me if you- "
"I told them." The girl said. "They were firstly very mad but then they asked me what I wanted."
"And...You chose?" Bull asked. It seemed he had his fingers crossed.
"I only know I don't want to go for abortion." She replied. "Maybe adoption or ... keeping the baby with myself."
Abortion? Adoption? What the hell are they talking about? This looks serious business.
"I see." Bull said.
They remained quiet for several moments before Bull spoke again.
"Listen," He said, frantically taking out something from his backpack. "I know that we don't know each other but you can trust me...If anytime, your parents decide to abandon you or your baby..." He quickly scribbled down something on a piece of paper. "This is my apartment address. Come as you are. I promise I will help you." Bull seemed to put so much emotion into his words that by now he was breathing heavily.
"A-And even now if you have any appointments or anything. Please do...do remember me."
The girl and I had the same expressions. Disbelief. Admiration. Shock. Heart melt.
Bull's chest was rising and falling. The girl didn't say anything while she looked at him with lips gaped and disbelief all over her face. Bull's cheeks flushed as he thought maybe he made a fool out of himself.
Say something! I mentally shouted at the girl.
Before Bull could say anything else, the girl hurriedly hugged him, tears building in her eyes.
"Thank you, thank you so much!" She cried.
Bull hesitantly placed his hands on her back, barely touching her. "No problem. It's the least I can do."
The girl pulled back after a few seconds and whimpered in his chest.
"I wish I hadn't been so foolish to sleep around with an irresponsible guy!" She complained while wiping her tears. It was no use as new tears replaced the old ones.
"It's okay. Don't blame yourself." Bull said. The girl moved away from him and stabilized herself.
"Your good name please?" Bull asked her, a small smile on his face.
"R-Riley." She shyly replied.
"Bull."
Was this really the guy whom people called 'bully'? Was he really the guy who donated his kidney to daddy? Was he really the guy whom I saw beating up other guys? Was he really the guy who was invited to dinner yesterday night? Was he the same guy?
I had seen so many faces of this one man in a few days that I didn't know what to think of him. Every piece of that first bad impression was completely broken and shattered by this new good deed of his. Wow. Just wow. So soft and tender. So helpful and reliable. He is such a good person. I was wrong. He beat up those guys because they were somehow distressing poor Riley. He was only making sure they never got close to her ever again. Hashtag respect!
I was glad I took my father's advice and followed Bull. I was no more afraid of him. But I owe him a sorry. I never made him feel welcomed yesterday. I was so distant and quiet. That wasn't the normal me.
It's okay, I told myself. I was going to befriend Bull on a totally new basis.
I was so lost in my thoughts that when I looked ahead, Bull had turned around after bidding Riley a bye. He made an abrupt stop staring ahead. I wondered why he robotically halted before realizing he was actually looking at me.
He was looking at me? Why was he looking at me? I mean how can he look at me? I was eavesdropping so I had to be hidden behind a large dustbin or a door or a wall. There is no way I was just standing flat in front of them!
...I realized I was doing just that.
Was I so engrossed into their conversation that I didn't even realize I wasn't properly hiding?
Hehe, oops.
I nervously looked at Bull but my face had a huge grin on. I had that 'mad journalist' face on. Like I was ready to slam him with my questions. 'Yes, hello, sir! I am Sadie Chloe from ABC and I just saw what you did there! That's a 'faith restored in humanity' deed, bro! And I just became your fan! Can I have your autograph? Viewers, as you can see the ABC team is first to bring you this hero who is so helping and selfless! We need more people like him. Such people exist, you ask? Well, yes! What you just saw there was no drama or acting. It was pure – Okay, Sadie, Sadie! Stop it! Stop it! There is Bull looking at you, moron!
Back to reality.
I was ready. Ready to befriend him (after being sorry for eavesdropping).
"H-Hi!" I breathed out and it came out shaky. I was like a fangirl standing before her idol. Nervously anticipating the reply from him.
Bull's entire façade changed dramatically. His small smile was replaced by a scowl. His forehead became angry. His chin showed annoyance. And his eyes were drained of all the light. It was like watching a chemical reaction take place.
"Mind your own business. It's bullshit to eavesdrop! Didn't your parents tell you that?" His voice contained venom.
Okay, that was a very quick turn of events. No, a very quick turn of Bull's personality. Wasn't he just offering generous help to that hopeless expecting girl?
And his voice! I couldn't recognize it anymore. My smile fell off like it wasn't ever there. All the excitement in my chest died and a dull feeling replaced it. Did alien control his mind from above and suddenly signaled him to turn into a rude guy? Because that was talent right there!
Bull turned back to look at Riley one final time before giving me a dirty look and walking past me.
Whoa!
Okay?....It's okay...anyone would be mad if others were to eavesdrop on them. It's not his mistake. I still can make things better if I follow him and apologize. Yes, I can do that!
I gave a nervous smile to Riley before turning and speed walking behind Bull.
"Ah, I am very sorry!" I tried to converse with him and keep up with his speed. But it was difficult as he was fast and people kept blocking my way as we passed through the hallway. Bull kept walking without giving me a reply.
"Hello? I said I am sorry!" I tried again. "I didn't mean to eavesdrop. I promise. It's just..."
No reply. More struggling. I picked up my pace.
"Are you even listening?"
Nope.
"Wait!" I finally managed to tag at his sleeve. And oh boy, did he furiously turn back and pulled away his sleeve? Yes, he did. I saw fire in his eyes and annoyance on his face. I usually don't take this kind of attitude from anyone but I don't know why I was taking it from Bull. Maybe because I was the one at fault.
"What do you want?" He angrily asked, managing to keep his voice low. Maybe he didn't want to draw attention.
"Hey, calm down. I just want to say I am sorry for eavesdropping on your conversation." I said, breathless from chasing him.
"OK, great. Now fuck off!" He said, turning around to leave again.
"Whoa, mister! Mind your language there." I said. He didn't reply and kept walking away. I shouted his name, "Bull!"
Some heads around us turned and so did Bull's. He walked up to me and narrowed his eyes, menacingly looking at me. "What the hell is your problem? And how do you know my name?" He asked.
"Huh? You don't recognize me?" I said.
"No. And I don't want to."
"We met yesterday night at the dinner, remember?"
"Dinner?"
"Yes, dinner at Dr Hill's house?"
Again the chemical reaction took place. As the realization hit him, he completely changed. His eyes softened, his lips quickly formed a smile and his entire face showed apology.
"Oh, y-you are Dr Hill's daughter?" He quickly asked.
"Yes!" Finally.
"Yes, Dr Hill had requested me to help you in college. Your name please?" He asked.
"Sadie. Sadie Chloe." I struck my hand out. Bull immediately took it.
"Sadie, I am so sorry for my earlier behavior. I had no idea. Please accept the apology." His voice was again smooth and soft and deep. I noticed that whether he was angry or neutral, his voice had the same depth. And I also wondered what sentiment would cause it to become more deep...probably sadness and sorrow?
"No, it's okay. I should be the one apologizing. I eavesdropped on your conversation and didn't even pay respect or gratitude yesterday."
He smiled a sweet smile and said, "So we should get started now."
"Started with what?"
"Dr Hill told me to give you a tour of the college first." He said it in a way that was so cute. "Correct me if I am wrong. I might have forgotten and if...."
Bull went on and on anxiously. I tuned out and just concentrated on the cute angle his facial features had taken. Were my dad's words that important to him? Was he really interested in giving this topic such importance? I honestly didn't know what daddy had said to him. But his respect for daddy was quickly causing me to grant him a place in my heart. And I decided I would go with him.
"Tour of the college sounds nice." I finally said, halting his panic speech.
"Oh, o-okay....great. Let's go." He said.
While Bull showed me the college, I kept on talking about how grateful I was of him for saving daddy. How I regretted not paying proper attention to him at yesterday's dinner. I didn't touch the Riley topic because it might anger or upset him. I mean I did a crime by listening to it and I shouldn't talk about it at least just now. If you had seen me there, you would think I was fangirling. Bull only listened quietly with a small smile on his lips. My brain kept nagging me that Bull's smile and his attention towards me were superficial but I kept pushing it away each time. This decision of mine will soon snap.
He only replied with 'hmm' and 'oh' if required; and kept nodding through the whole thing. When the tour was done, Bull turned to face me and said, "Sadie, this was it. I hope I was helpful. If you have questions please let me know. I will be happy to answer."
Questions? I didn't even hear a word that he said (If he spoke at all). The only thing important to me was getting my thoughts into him.
"No questions." I said.
"Great. Then please allow me to leave. If you ever need my help, I will be in the library or by my locker 753." He struck his hand out. "I wish you a pleasant day."
I took his hand and lost myself in his pretty eyes. He awkwardly took his hand out when I refused to let go.
"My regards to Dr Hill." He said before turning to leave.
I was still in a state of ...state of...well, I don't know! It felt like the rest of the world was blank and only we stood and like he had the most beautiful pair of eyes and...and like I was flying. In a land of felicity.
Then it hit me that he was actually leaving. He would probably vanish from my sight without having me say the most important thing to him. I had to stop him.
"Bull!"
He turned.
"Want to be friends?"
And that was the start of it all. I would regret this friendship, I would fall in love with it, I would want to do nothing with it and I would take a bullet to keep it. If I could explain in one line my life with Bull, I would. But I can't. And that is why I am writing this.
Bull had reluctantly agreed that day, hoping to never see me again. Because he thought what would I come to him for when we don't share any classes? But he was wrong. I would be after him.
