Chapter 29 - Raven
I narrow my eyes at them and imagine that they must be laughing at everything. Having fun with the new girl in town, I guess.
You know it's the truth. –The voice echoes in the back of my head. I think back to earlier and how my head ached and my eyes flickered. No, this can't be real.
"You've got to be kidding me." I laugh, trying to act as if I'm not panicking on the inside, but Brie is serious. I can see it on her face.
"It's true, and if the prophecy is right, you are powerful," she states.
"I don't understand. How do you know my parents?" I ask Mr. Michaels.
"I'm a warlock, an old friend of your father's."
"But I thought you guys said that all witches and warlocks died that night?"
"No, we said most of them did. A few were able to hide and remain hidden, like me. Before I went underground, I was able to cloak you and bind your powers so that you could survive and live out your life," he tells me.
I listen as they recount how Brie's grandmother used a disguise to protect her family. They wouldn't be able to distinguish if Brie's family included witches because she wouldn't develop her powers until she was of legal age. Instead of her mother, they followed the blood line through her father. The vamps only discovered two mortals and their mortal child when they came to investigate because Brie's grandma was concealed from view by a cloak. In terms of genetics, it appears that vampires are very clueless.
There is still something they are keeping from me. Their expressions reflect that. Why they are so worried is beyond me. The battle is over. Why do they seem so concerned when the war has been forgotten?
"There's a little minor problem," Brie says. I knew it! I look at her, motioning for her to continue, "Sloane, she's been hell-bent on finding the little girl. She's been waiting for the day to ruin you, well, she doesn't know it's you, but the little girl – whom she blames for the reason her parents are dead – will stop at nothing to make sure you're dead," Brie tells me.
I take a deep breath, hands on my head. Great because she didn't hate me already.
"Can you unbind my powers?"
"It's already been done the moment you walked through my doors the first time," he says. That explains the candles going out when I got mad and the electric shock I sent Sloane when she grabbed me.
Oh shit!
"I think Sloane might have an idea who I am. This morning, when she grabbed me, it was like an electric shock was sent from my body to hers. It hurt her. It was like I couldn't control it. I was just pissed she grabbed me."
"With us by your side, we can help you learn and control it," Brie says, hugging me.
"I guess I do need to stay away from Clay," I say quietly. I knew I shouldn't have let him break down my walls; I hurt myself, which I never wanted to happen.
"It's for your safety," Brie says softly. The vampires will try anything to destroy me if they learn who I am. Clay is not someone I can trust yet.
"Let's get started then!" Mr. Michaels says with a smile.
"I have one question," I say, looking at Brie. "Does Logan know who you are?"
"Yes, but he won't tell anyone, not even Clay. He doesn't want me to get hurt, so he keeps my secret." She responds, wow, I guess he does love her.
Knock, knock,
Who could that be?
Brie goes to open the door. It's Logan. "What are you doing here?" I ask. "He is here to help," Brie continues. "Some of the spells that you need to learn, you need a vampire, and Logan volunteered to help." Great.
They assert that no other witches or warlocks have ever utilised the spells they describe; I am the only one who is capable of casting them. In order to complete each task, it was necessary for everyone to work together and utilise their abilities to the fullest extent. However, Brie and Mr. Michaels believed that I should be capable of completing the spell on my own.
"Okay, let's start with something simple," Mr. Michaels says. "Try using the wind to throw Logan across the room." Logan looks at me and tells me he is ready.
"Now repeat after me, Ventus." As I focus on Logan, I feel a rush of power and can feel the wind flowing through me.
"Ventus,"
The wind picks Logan up, and I'm able to throw him across the room. "Oh my god, are you okay?" I say, running towards Logan, "Oh shit, you're bleeding. I'm so sorry."
"It's all good, look." He says, wiping the blood, "All gone; I heal quickly, remember?"
I don't want to do this anymore; it's freaking me out. "Ahh!" I scream as a shooting pain runs across my shoulder. "What the hell was that?" I lower my shirt, running towards the mirror. I have a black swirl tattooed on my shoulder blade.
I look to Brie and Mr. Michaels for answers. "You truly are the hybrid. The four main spells will show themselves on you. Intertwined with one another. The first one is wind."
"What are the others?" I ask them.
"You will know when you do them. So now that wind is out of the way, that was an easy one," Mr. Michaels states. "There is one spell that only you should be able to do that inflicts so much pain upon a vampire."
"You mean you want me to hurt Logan more than I did? Nope, not happening."
"It's okay, Ray; they've already told me what it is; you could kill me if you don't stop before it does, but I trust you and believe you can do this; just test it; I'm ready," Logan says softly but with confidence and a goofy smile.
"What's going to happen to him?" I ask, afraid of the answer.
"You will be giving him an aneurysm, but because he heals fast, it will be over and over again, but if you go longer than what we told you, his body won't be able to keep up with the healing," Brie tells me, great this girl just put her boyfriend's life in my hands.
"Okay, let's do this, Logan; if I can do this, I'm sorry, this is going to hurt." Logan nods. I stare at him, concentrating, and say,
"Contristo,"
When Logan hits the ground, he grabs his head and screams in agony. I'm utterly amazed by what I'm doing. I break the link of wanting to hurt him, he falls to the ground, and I sprint over to him while yelling again, "I'm so sorry." He grins as he turns to face me.
"Remind me not to get on your bad side." We all laugh, but I think that's enough for today.
"AHHHH!" I dropped to the ground. The searing pain of needles hit my back. I get up after taking a deep breath. Looking in the mirror once more, a mark I've never seen before appears. A shape that I couldn't begin to explain. But it looks cool.
Mr. Michaels hands me the book and tells me that the grimoire tells you what the spells are for and that I should practise them. He says that I am indeed the girl the prophecy is speaking of; in Brie's words, "No witch could ever knock a vampire on their ass like you just did."
But I need to be careful, and I have to find a way to stay far away from Clay. This had to happen just as we both let each other in. I flip through the pages of the grimoire, amazed at the complexity of the spells written within. Some of them require rare ingredients or specific lunar phases, while others seem to require nothing more than concentration and willpower. As I read, I can feel the power within me growing, a newfound confidence coursing through my veins. But with that power comes danger, and I know that I must tread carefully. Clay is a vampire, and I am a witch. Our worlds were never meant to collide, and I fear what may happen if they do.
But as I think about Clay and the intense connection we share, I can't help but feel conflicted. How can I stay away from him when he's the only one I want to run to?
