Chapter 9: Good Bye

Evelyn woke with a groan. Her body hurt. Everything inside and out hurt, she wasn't sure why, she wasn't hit with an electric launcher, but everything hurt. She lay on the bed shivering. She only now realized Newt was no longer beside her. He must have gone somewhere. She was too tired to get up, to cold. She pulled the blanket higher and wrapped it right around her bony shoulders.

Her hair was dry, so she must have slept a long time. She lay still, the hum of the berg engine was soothing. She was laying with a blanket and pillow for the first time in a very long time, she enjoyed it. She closed her eyes and drifted off again.

This time when she woke up Newt was back, he was sitting cross legged on the ground in front of the bed writing in his journal. He looked over his shoulder when she shifted and made a noise when she stretched.

"Morning."

"Hi."

"Hungry?"

"Starving."

She slowly sat up. Her arms felt weak and shaky, but she didn't hurt nearly as much when she first woke up.

"It's not exactly...Frypan's stew, but it's callouries." He held out some kind of military pack food. He turned his body so he was facing her, but still sitting on the ground.

"I haven't eaten anything solid in a month. This is great."

Newt's face paled, "a month?"

"Just whatever was in that IV. It kept me from dying...just enough for my body to function I guess."

"Bloody hell, Evy!"

Evelyn took a small mouthful of food, slowly chewing it and swallowing. She ate about half before she was starting to feel sick. She set the food aside.

"So...what's going on out there?"

"Well...everyone slept abiyt ten hours. Jorge flew us a safe way away, cut the trackers, his us and everyone slept. Then there was a buggen' team meeting...they all talked in circles...then finally decided to go to Denver. When the Right Arm was seen last and apparently where Teresa and the others were headed."

"Are you gonna go with them? Find Mary?"

"Are you?" He retorted, raising an eyebrow.

"The serum didn't work on me. So what's the point? I'm not going to be the reason others get infected. I'm not going to be the reason I wake up and find a dead friend because I cranked too close to them."

He nodded.

"And...I ...I thought we had made an agreement...?" She asked hesitantly.

"We did. I'm not backing out. You better not back out on me!"

Evelyn slid off the bed and into his lap. He automatically lied her closer. She wrapped her legs around his waist, and her arms around his shoulders, hugging him like a small child or kowala would a tree.

Once he had pulled her close both hands went to her jaw. His thumbs rubbed across her cheek bone.

"I missed you so much! When they pulled you off the Berg unconscious I didn't know if I would see you again. I was pulled a few times into a room, strapped to a chair with all kinds of monitors and a tv was pulled up."

Evelyn sat up straighter and watched his eyes as he talked.

"It was a tv of you, in chains, screaming to it to stop. I don't know what they were doing, but after a while I thought it was just them messing with me. Well it was, but I didn't know it was happening in real time. I thought it was all edited. I'm sorry Lee."

"You didn't know. They've done that before." She tried to soothed him, "I'm here now. You're here now, and when we land, we leave."

"Deal." He whispered, placing his forehead on hers.

He just held her, wrappithis arms around her tiny waist and pulled her tight. She turned her head and buried her face into his neck, one of his hands dug into her hair. They held onto each other like they would loose each other. They didn't say anything. They just sat, for a long time. Newt finally got up off the cold floor. Evelyn had lost so much weight she weight almost nothing. He sat down on the bed and then lay down, taking her with him. She lay on top of him, her face still pressed into his neck.

They lay quiet, trying to make up for all the lost time that was ripped from them.

It was a few hours of silence when she finally spoke.

"So...Janson told me something..."

"Oh?"

"When I was passed out, the first week I was missing?"

He just hummed, waiting for her to continue, he ran a hand through her hair.

"They reversed my surgery." She whispered quietly.

"Reversed...?" He shifted to look at her. She slowly sat up. Her knees on either side of him.

"My surgery." She nodded, biting her bottom lip.

"You believe him?" He asked.

"It's the one thing I do believe." Evelyn said quietly.

"Well that's just...awful, why would he do that now? Knowing...know ...the Flares mortality rate?"

"Because Eat man is jacked and evil and sinister and a coward!" Evelyn spat bitterly.

Newt looked at her sadly, his big brown eyes full of heart break. After years of not having a period, then of having a dream of escaping, a life with the young man she loved, maybe having kids...that was ripped from her when she found out she wasn't immune, and she was thankful she didn't have to deal with all that...only for Janson to throw it back in her face.

"Yep. Can you just imagine a cranked out pregnant mother? It'd be great. Crank parents raising their cranky baby in Crank Palace." Evelyn spat again. She could feel the anger rising. The crank cackling was trying to push through.

Evelyn felt hands grab her shoulders and pull her back down, a hand went to the back of her head and Newt kissed her.

The cackling quieted. Evelyn dug her hands into his hair. She only let go when she had to breath and her lungs couldn't anymore.

"Evy, where ever you are...your my home. You're my family. We have limited time, and we'll do what we can. I'm sorry we can't have the full dream we wanted...but I have you. And that's enough."

The Berg finally landed. Evelyn followed Newt down the hall, she was scared to be around people. Especial Sonny. She didn't want to face him after what she did. Newt held her hand tight, her other one was wrapped around her tiny waist. He lead her to the main room of the Berg.

Evelyn watched from the far wall as everyone packed their bags, her eyes filled with tears. She was determined in her design to leave, but it hurt. Her chest hurt watching her family pack up.

They had no idea what Newt and her were planning. But it was for the best. She had cranked out too many times for her to be safe. She didn't want them to see her like that anymore. She refused to let them see it.

"All right. We ready?" Jorge called.

There was a collective agreement. Newt came to stand beside her. He had a scowl on his face. His eyes looked dark and broody. How Evwlyns soul felt. Minho came over.

"Last chance. Pixy wanna come? I'll make sure your -"

"No." She snapped. "I'm not gonna be the reason some kid doesn't have a mother anymore. I'm not gonna be the reason I gut one of you 'cause I can't control it. Stop asking." I snapped.

He held up his hands in defeat.

"We'll be back as soon as we can okay?"

"Whatever." Newt shrugged.

Minho opened his arms and even though Evelyn was angry and hurt and trying to keep her resaulv she stepped into his arms and hugged him. For the last time. Evelyn but her lip hard to keep from crying.

"I love you Minho."

"Love you too fiesty Pixy. Don't do anything stupid."

She pulled away, "how? Your taking all the stupid with you."

He gasped and held his chest. Evelyn's lip twitched into a small smile. He smirked at her, but she saw his eyes weren't in it, they looked dead and flat. He turned to Newt and clasped his shoulder.

"Just hold on okay? We'll be back as soon as we can."

The rest of the group came and gave them a hug and the saying the same thing. Sonya held Evelyn's face. She didn't say anything just looked at her with sad eyes, the same as her brother. She pulled Evelyn into such a tight loving hug, Evelyn felt the sob in her chest. Sonya just hugged tighter.

She let go and pulled Newt into a hug. She whispered something to him and he just nodded. He pulled away with a sniff.

"Go on. Get going."

"Eve?" A deep voice said beside her. She looked over. Sonny was standing there.

Shame and guilt washed over her. She wrapped her arms around herself. And she hung her head.

"I'm sorry Sonny." She said quietly.

"Not your fault. I hope I didn't hurt you when I pinned you to the ground."

"I'm fine. You didn't try to kill your best friend."

"You didn't either."

"I did! Don't patronize me! I know what I did." She snapped. She shook her head and took a deep breath with her eyes closed. "Sonny, I release you from our promise."

He didn't say anything. Instead he pulled her into a hug. She stiffened for a moment, but then melted into a hug. She tightened her arms around him. The last hug.

"Pleas...Eve, I know your planning something. Just wait until we get back. Mary might have fixed whatever the problem was. Please. Just hold on."

Evelyn pulled away.

"You need to go."

Evelyn stepped away and walked to the other side of the room. To the small port window. Jorge gave her a small sad nod and the lowered the ramp. The group all headed down the ramp. They reached the bottom and Thomas turned like he was going to say something, but shook his head and kept walking. The ramp came back up slowly and closed.

It was silent in the Berg. It was just Newt and her.

"There they go." He muttered quietly.

Evelyn watched her friends walk towards the huge walls of Denver, towards the huge gate that barred the way into the Last City. Evelyn looked up at the huge walls that surrounded the city. It was hard not to think of the Maze and the Glade, where all this wild crazy madness had started. Litterly.
She watched her friends disappear.
Minho.
Sonny.
Thomas.
Sonya.
Brenda.
Jorge.
And the rest of her friends all inside the walls already, hiding somewhere inside.

She felt an ache in her chest. A deep hard sharp penetrating pain. Evelyn had felt pain, both inside and out, but this was a different kind of pain. Similar to when she thought Newt had cheated and dumped her for Thomas. But this was worse. Known she would never see them again. They were walking away from her for ever.

The sorrow bearing on her heart was almost too much, she closed her eyes. Tears leaked down her clamped eyelids. Her breaths camp in short stuttered gasps. Part of her wanted to abandon their plan, recklessly open the ramp and run after them. But she couldn't. She wouldn't. This was for the best.

She opened her eyes. They were gone. Newt stood looking out the window, tears ran down his face as well.

She reached a hand out and slid her hand into his. He jumped, almost like he forgot she was there. He wiped the tears and looked at her. His eyes looked stormy.

"Alone." He said.

"All alone." She nodded, and looked back out the window.

He stepped closer.

"Finally alone."

Evelyn raised an eyebrow at him. His eyes darkened.

"How are you feeling?" He asked.

"Physically? Emotionally? Mentally?" Evelyn asked.

"Yes."

"I'll handle it."

"Yeah you will." He growled.

Newt pushed her against the Berg wall and kissed her. He kissed her hard. A hand travelled from her waist where he had grabbed her, and slid up her body, up her chest to her neck. He pulled away, and his hand forced her head to look up. He was already breathing hard.

Evelyn's stomach was on a wild rollercoaster. Her heart slammed into her ribs, but it was skipping beats. Evelyn's eyes fluttered open, Newt was looking at her like he was starving. She smirked. The crank in her her cackled.

Ooo yes my lovely little witch. Someone wants to play dirty with you. Let's have some fun!

The smirk on Evelyn's face grew.

"Tighter." She whispered.

Newt raised an eyebrow. But pressed his body into hers while his hand slowly applied more pressure.

"Don't be gentle. You promised me to slamm me into a wall. Now come on!"

Newt pulled his body away, but his hand stayed around her neck, holding her tight. He pulled her away from the wall, and slammed her back into it. She let out a gasp and then a wild cackle left her. A manic smile appeared on her face. The look in both their eyes was one of insanity.

"I can make you do all sorts of things." Newt growled in her face.

"Do it!" She begged, "make me do it all!"

A twisted smile appeared on his normal shy face. She cackled again. It was a good thing no one else was left on the Berg.

Both of them lay on the ground panting and sweaty, searched, bruised and sore. Newt reached out and pulled her closer.

"Lee...?" He asked hesitantly.

"Yeah?"

"I'm sorry if I hurt you." He whispered. He propped himself up, his worried brown eyes trailed over her body. Hesitating on the hand print on her neck and shoulders.

"I'm okay Newt. I promise. I love you."

"I love you too!" He said quietly, she heard the fear in his voice and saw the tears in his eyes.

"Newt, I'm okay. Your okay. This is why we're leaving. Together. We don't act like us. And as much as I want a nap...we need to go."

Newt nodded slowly. He leaned down and kissed her bruised neck gently.

"Stop worrying. It's not what we normally do...but it was..."

"Bloody hot." He smirked shyly at her.

Evelyn hummed and smiled back. He got up and helped her up. They got changed and Evelyn wandered into the other room to find her stuff. It was weird being in the Berg alone. It was quiet. No one was here no one was coming back, she would never see them again. Ever.

It hit her like a title wave. Like a wild wall of water. Evy had to stop and lean against the wall, holding her chest. It felt like the last piece of her heart just disintegrated. The anxiety and panic threatened to drown her.

"Newt!" She screamed.

She didn't know if she could do this. She sunk to her knees, not able to breath.
