Chapter 2: A Visit

Evelyn's scream turned from anger to a helpless cry of hopelessness. She retreated back into her corner, huddling down. Turning her back to Janson and the room. She rocked back and forth, her head hiding in her arms as best she could with her hands chained up.

"Make it stop...make it stop." She whispered.

"Oh Honey...my beautiful murderous witch...I will. I'll make it all go away."  The Crank whispered. Evelyn shook her head.

"Have we learned our lessoned yet Evelyn?" Janson asked.

Evelyn turned her head, glaring at him, "Shuck you Ratman!"

Janson carried on like he didn't hear anything. Evelyn took in his appearance. It was Janson, the same man who used her for her powers, lied and manipulated her into killing men, whether they were innocent or not, she still killed them. Same long nose, same weasel-like eyes; that greasy hair, combed over an obvious bald spot that took up half his head. Same ridiculous white suit. He looked paler than the last time Evelyn had seen him, though, and he was holding a thick folder filled with dozens of crinkled and messily stacked papers in the crook of one elbow.

"What do you want, Rat Man?" Evelyn spat.

"Good morning to you too." He sneered.

"It'll only be a good morning if you let me out." Evelyn's voice was dry and croaky.

Not even a flicker of change passed over the man's expression. "Yes, yes, I know. No need to worry...you're going to be hearing plenty of positive news today. Trust me."

Evelyn thought about that, ashamed that she let it lift her hopes, even for a second. She then snorted in derision, and rolled her eyes. "Trust ...trust you? Positive news? Didn't you choose us because you thought we were intelligent?"

Rat Man remained silent for several seconds before he responded. "Intelligent, yes. Among more important reasons." He paused and studied Evelyn before continuing. "Do you think we enjoy all this? You think we enjoy watching you suffer? It's all been for a purpose, and very soon it will make sense to you." The intensity of his voice had built until he'd practically shouted that last word, his face now red.

"Bullshit." Evelyn said quiet calmly. She shifted making the chains rattle more then necessary. She was now sitting with her chained ankles out straight, her chained hands resting in her lap, the IV bag hanging from the wall, and the tube snaked up her arm, taped in a few places holding it in place.

Rat Man raised his head from his papers and looked at her. He gave her such a convincing look of pity and sadness Evelyn almost believed it.

"It's true. We did everything to you for a purpose. We had the world to save. And you had a gift no one had ever seen before. We kept you safe! It is the same with all the Subjects in the Maze Trials! I saved your life!"

"How? By stealing our freedom? Stealing our minds? Our shucken identities?" Evelyn spat.

"It was all done with a reason." Janson sighed.

"What do you want? Why are you here?"

"Well, I wanted to swing by and explain some things."

"Oh lucky me. I'd say pull up a chair, but..." Evelyn looked around her empty jail cell, and with a mock frown, "Oh dear, I have no furniture, not even a bed to sit on. Well I do have a royal throne for you. Suits you." She indicated with a chained hand to the steal little toilet.

Janson just looked at her, and blinked a few times.

"Are you done?"

"No. Just getting started, you ugly sewer rat!"

The crank in her head was cackling with her. Evelyn grinned, she knew it was twisted, but she was so angry. The fear that had built in her chest turned into a boiling anger, it ran through her veins like hot corrosive rage. She wanted revenge. It was a good thing she was chained, she would have killed Rat Man over and over.

"You would think, that being chained in the basement cellar of WICKED's facility for a few weeks would humble a girl. But you seem more arrogant than ever."

"Thank the crank in my head. Oh and you can thank yourself. You stripped all my trust, and morality, you stole everything kind and gentle from me." She snarled.

"Well, good thing we have been giving you regular serum through that IV."

"We wouldn't want a full Gone crank in your basement, now would we." Evelyn's mockery was getting worse the more Rat Man kept talking. The anger was slowly building.

"Indeed. You will also be happy to know, we have reversed all surgeries." Rat Man went on, flipping through his papers.

"More lies from the Rat. I have no memories."

"That's not the surgery I was referring to." He looked up, his beady little eyes were looking her dead in the eye. She had a feeling deep in her gut, she knew he was telling the truth. The anger in her chest exploded out of her. She leapt to her feet and lunged at Janson again, screaming, spitting, and snarling like the wild animal they thought she was.

"Why the HELL would you do that now? Give me the ability to have my first period while chained to the damn wall; dangle a life with the highly unlikely possibility of kids right before I die?! You twisted sick son of a bitch! I hate you! I HATE YOU!"

Janson didn't move or flinch, he stood stiff and straight watching her reaction, he watched her screaming and fighting. Evelyn could feel the crank cackling. She felt the creepy crawling in her skull. The bugs crawling in her head were back. Her arm flashed with ice cold pain. Evelyn screamed so loud she swore the whole of WICKED could hear now.

"Let me help you my feral little creature."

Evelyn relinquished her struggle, she let the crank take over. Evelyn's mind went blank and she remembered no more.

Evelyn's mind came back to the present. She was laying on the stone ground, a bloody gash on her forehead, like she slammed her head into the wall or the ground. She was covered in sweat. She was exhausted, everything hurt. She pushed herself up onto her elbows, she was shaking and shivering.

"Welcome back." said a dry voice.

Evelyn hated his voice. Hated it with everything in her, every nerve bristled when he talked. She kept her head looking in the other direction. She slowly pulled herself into her corner again, like the whipped defeated dog she felt like. Curling into the cold damp stone again, like it could protect her.

"Now, can we finish this conversation?"

Evelyn didn't say anything, she leaned her pounding forehead on he wall, keeping her eyes closed.

"We returned your natural cycle to see what would change in your Killzone. We have monitored your Killzone for years, we removed that...obstacle you would have had to deal with each month, so your body could focus on your powers. And the results were extraordinary! The power to heal the broken and sick."

Evelyn didn't have the energy anymore to argue. She had been 13 years old. They did...whatever they did to sterilize her. She was a child. A child with no way of voicing her opinion, not like Ava Paige or Janson would have listened. She had been a prisoner, locked away in a stone prison. Much like she was now. And now as she was dying knowing she could never have a life with Newt. She could never get back to Mary who had the only way to keep her sort of healthy...she was going to be kept just barley alive for whatever shucked up reason Janson had, and no way to have kids with Newt. She would have to deal with the return of her cycle in a stone dungeon as she cranks out. Alone. She curled tighter into the stone, trying to disappear. Trying very hard not to cry. She felt so alone.

"We have also been coming up with a new serum. With the help of two of your Group A subjects and two from Group B...lets see," He flipped a few pages, "Subject A1 and A7 and..." He flipped another page in his folder, "Subjects B1 and B5."

"Tessa and Minho...and Aris and Sonya? What are you doing to them?" She whispered, horrified, the fear and panic bubbling to the surface.

"We have been simulating some different scenarios for Subject A7 and B5. And as far as A1 and B1 thy have been quite helpful in administrating the serums and in the labs."

"Only because your forcing them! You're controlling them!"

Janson waved his hand dismissively. Apparently mind control and manipulation was insignificant in his twisted world.

"Details." He sniffed. He flipped a few more pages. "Now. As for the real heart of the matter. We need to extract some of your enzymes and blood. We need to see what has changed in your body, in your powers, why it has switched so drastically, and wont go back. We need to test a few theories." He closed the file. Pulling the control out of his pocket. This thumb hovering over a button. "We are going to get you situated, but any kind of resistance or fighting you know what will happen."

Before she understood what he had said, an entire swat team of WICKED guards dressed in full combat gear, came charging into her cell. One guy had a long metal pole that hand a loop of thick cord at the end. She tried wiggling away from it, but he had looped the cord around her neck. Evelyn struggled and fought, but she couldn't get her head free. She really did feel like a feral animal now. They had her cornered, a loop over her neck, the guard held the pole, so she couldn't fight. He pulled her, and she had to follow, the cord around her neck, and the pole was to think for her to fight against. She was snarling like the feral animal they were treating her like.

A guard got behind her, she tried twisting around, the the guard jerked the pole, making her head jerk away. He slammed the pole to the ground, making her head slam into the stone ground, she couldn't get up. With a cry of pain, the guard knelt down, pressing his knees into her back, she couldn't move. The chain on her hands moved, and then her arms were jerked and ripped to the sides of her body. The loop around her neck was jerked, the pressure on her back disappeared. She was jerked to her knees and her arms were chained back to the wall, this time however her arms were spread out, so she had little to no movement. She was on her knees, arms spread wide. The guard with the pole jerked it again, forcing her head to look up. Another guard stomped up to her. His face wasn't visible behind the black shield. He looked like something out of nightmares. In his hands he held some kind of contraption. She realized right away it was the metal muzzle Janson put on her when they were captured. Evelyn tried fighting, she tried to snarl and bite.

The jail cell was filled with the screams of everyone she loved. It echoed off the stone and bounced around. making the noise swell. She heard the voice of Newt screaming for help. Minho calling for help. Sonny and Nick, Thomas, Jeff and Frypan, Sonya and Teresa, Harriet, Percy and James, Amy...she heard Brenda and even Jorge and Jaz in the mix, all calling for help, pleading for the pain to stop.

Evelyn cried. Tears streamed down her face. She was responsible for this, she was responsible for their pain. Janson may have lied the first time, but she saw what he could do at the Right Arm Camp. He used her on Minho to get him to be compliant. She knew he would do it.

She held still while they clamped the muzzle over her mouth. Once she was deemed "safe" and she couldn't hurt anyone the guards backed off and more people were waved in. Her IV was reinserted by a woman dressed in white. Evelyn assumed this was one of the WICKED people who called themselves doctors or scientists. Something else was inserted into her other arm. Her blood started to slowly drip out, and it was collected in a big clear vial. Sticky monitors were placed on her forehead, temples and a few on her chest.

The woman in white injected a blue serum into her IV. Evelyn watch it slowly drip and travel through the tube and into her veins. She immediately began to wither. The pain in her body was nothing she had experienced before. Everything was on fire. It felt like it was eating away at her, from the inside out. Her body was on fire. The burning in her muscles made her cry into the muzzle. She only begged once before, when she had blood poisoning, and it was killing her...now she was screaming for the end. But no one heard her. Her screams where muffled and she was alone except for a guard, and doctor and Janson. Even the crank in her head had abandoned her.

Evelyn was completely alone.
