Y/n's Pov
Y/n!" Ben enraged tone rang in my ears, but all I could focus on was him.
I watched Five walking away, admiring the nonchalant way he took each step. He looked like a Prince Charming in his elegant, well-fitted black tuxedo, yet at the same time so dark, dangerous.
"Y/n, for fuck's!" My fiancé-to-be squeeze my arm painfully. "Is this some twisted retribution?"
"Retribution?" I asked.
"Don't play dumb! You know what I'm talking about," Ben whisper-yelled against my ear, peeking around anxiously. "Who was that kid?"
"I don't know..." I let out a quiet sigh. I was asking myself the same question.
Who was this mysterious man with the captivating touch and electrifying gaze?
What is he doing at my engagement party?
It can't be a coincidence, can it?
"You don't know?" Ben scoffed. "Well, okay. I'll tell you who he is not." He was seething. "He's not your fucking fiancé. I am!" He barely kept his voice low before letting go of my arm's tightening grip and trotting toward the exit, grabbing a glass of champagne on the way that he drank in one go.
I looked around to spot people staring at me, but I didn't care. For the first time in my life, I wasn't burning in shame. Instead, I was occupied by Five's husky voice ringing in my ears. "Meet me upstairs at the library in fifteen minutes." I was occupied with figuring out a way to escape this ridiculous engagement party that shouldn't have taken place, a way to sneak out to the library to meet my mysterious man.
I was climbing up the stairs, and the clicking of my heels against the polished marble stone was the only thing making the sound of my pumping heart.
"Where do you think you're going?" I jumped out in fear hearing my father's harsh voice as I reached the end of the stairs.
I swallowed, peeking behind him at the door leading to the library where I knew Five was supposed to wait.
"Number eight?" He said, his tone raised, watching me.
"I'm going to my room to change," I managed to blurt out.
"Change?" He stood there with his arms cross and frowning.
"Yes." I cleared my throat to sound more convincing. "I have another dress prepared for the proposal."
"Woman." He rolled his eyes obnoxiously before heading down the stairs.
I slowly took a few steps toward my room, turning back to check if my father had walked away, nervous playing with my fingers.
"You came," Five said, entirely composed, holding his hands behind his back as I entered the library.
"I was hesitant for a moment, but I had to come," I stated.
Five slowly took a few steps closer, reaching his hand behind me to close the door. His gaze fixated on me, and a soft smile curled up in the corner of his tempting lips. He rested his hand on the doorframe and leant down to look at me, holding me semihostage between his body and the heavy wooden door behind me. I kept holding my breath as if scared to let myself indulge in his intoxicating body scent combined with his smoky and spice cologne of musk and patchouli.
"You had to?" he teased, grabbing my chin with his fingers and running his thumb over my slightly parted lips as our gazes locked.
"Yes. I need to know who you are and why you're here. Are you a reporter? Did someone send you for my family?"
He scoffed, still hovering over me. "You really don't recognize me?"
"Should I."
I scanned his face carefully, staring from his strong jawline, dark-black hair pleasingly falling onto his forehead, down to his beautifully gleaming blue-greenish hooded eyes, straight nose, and narrow lips. Inch by inch, but I still hadn't remembered meeting him before. I took a deep breath fighting the growing urge to taste those alluring lips of his. He leaned down even farther so out lips were parted by nothing but our warm breaths. He rested his forehead on mine, trapping me with both his arms.
Was he fighting the urge to kiss me like I was.
"You don't know what's you're doing," I breathed against his lips. "I could kill you before you can even blink again."
He didn't seem to care about what I said. Instead, he scoffed, smirking provocatively, which was hot to me.
"I'm not afraid of you Y/n. Or you're family." He whispered, slowly stepping back before looking piercingly into my eyes. "I'm not afraid of anyone, Y/n."
I looked at him, somewhat intrigued. "Who are you?"
He stood still a statue, focused on me before stating, "I'm Five Hargreeves."
Hargreeves.
My blood ran cold. I should've ran away after hearing this surname, but of course, I didn't.
The "other" Hargreeves family the most powerful family, father warm me and my siblings about theme since the he adopted us, but of course I never believed him until now. They are mostly know because they have the same last names like us. According to what father tells us, they also have powers just like us. Although my father always told is the "other" Hargreeves family were are enemies, we never found out the reason why they were, I did not recognize Five. Yes, I heard of his family name often, but to me, it sounded surreal. Supposedly, Five, being number five in the umbrella academy also with his other siblings, they were the as powerful as us. All I knew for sure was that they we're the greatest enemy of my father. It made since to me why Five wasn't afraid of him, or my family. His whole family did not fear anything or anyone.
"If you want to get out of this ridiculous engagement thing, be at the back of the service entrance." His raspy voice snapped me out of my thoughts. "Eight o'clock, sharp," he added before turning on his heel and leaving through the other door leading to a reading room.
Time passed, and I got back to my engagement party. Ben dragged me to join are family, who, as he claimed, they were dying to congratulate us. I sat by the round table beautiful decorated with red cloth, golden ornaments, black and white roses. I had Ben making jokes every comment on my right. In front of me was my father and Marcus eating the dinner that was served to us. I glanced across the room, wondering what was going through the heads of the guests, while I wondered how my life would be with married to Ben? Once a cheater, always a cheater, no?
"You look phenomenal in that dress, Y/n," Fei exclaimed before taking a long sip of her champagne.
"Thank you, Fei." I relied tightly. Fei never had a soft spot for some please, but to me she was overwhelming kind of aura that made it impossible for me not to be comfortable around her.
"I agree with Fei, Y/n," Jayme said while lifting her glass of champagne. "You definitely outshine better than Ben's lame ass speech either." I could help but chuckle to Jayme's comment.
"You should go to powder your nose, Y/n," Sloane squeezed my arm gently, semiwhispering into my ear. "It's nearly eight. It's time for the proposal. You should look your best."
"Eight?" Suddenly my heart started pumping heavily again. Everyone looked at me, somewhat puzzled. I was barely composing my nerves because I knew I didn't want to marry a man who just a few days ago was fucking a random girl. I didn't want to live against my father's rules no more. At the same time, I was hesitant about whether I could trust Five Hargreeves or not. Most likely not. But could it stop the invisible, irreversible pull toward this man?
Be at the back of the service entrance. Eight o'clock, sharp.
Sloane nudged me, whispering, "Y/n?"
I cleared my throat and put down the napkin that I was nervously squeezing in my hand. "Excuse me. I need to powder my nose," I said before leaving the table.
I was rushing toward the restroom, adrenaline growing in my veins. Everything around because a blur. I couldn't hear the tittle-tattles or the slow classical music. All I could hear was my heartbeat.
"Y/n." I felt a firm grip of my left elbow and turned to see my boyfriend. "Do you want me to accompany you?"
"To the bathroom?" I breathed heavily.
"Yes, you look pale."
"No," I huffed. "I'm just a little stressed. That's all."
"Are you sure?" He frowned. His eyes darted back and forth between mine.
"I'm sure, Ben." I managed to steady my breath. "I'll be right back." I gave him a reassuring yet fake smile before turning on my heels and heading down the hall.
I found myself running through the long hallways of my father's residence with a thousand questions crossing my mind. I looked at the vast clock hanging in the middle of the wall to check the time. I grabbed the lower part of my dress to make it easier it easier for me to run faster. Until I finally took a breath of fresh air, inhaling and exhaling heavily, looking at Five sitting on a motorcycle.
My eyes grew wide in pure shock. I had never riddle on a motorcycle before, and he expected me to do it in a ball grown? It was crazy.
"Jump on!" The running motorcycle engine muffled his husky voice.
I was about to walk to Five on the motorcycle until I heard the door open behind revealing Jayme, watching me, baffled, with her jaw dropping on the ground.
"What are you doing Y/n?!" Jayme said in shocked.
That was when I knew if I didn't make a move now, I'd have to go back to my engagement party and say yes to the man I didn't love.
"It's not or never. Hop on!" Five shouted, and for some reason, his voice tamed my rumbling heart.
Without a second thought, I dashed down the stairs of the academy, jumped on his Harley Davidson bike, and rode away with the sexiest most dangerous man I'd ever met, my enemy, Five Hargreeves.
