⇉ Chapter Thirteen
Making choices is a hell of a big deal in life, you make the wrong one and everything around you crumbles. But the problem is, by the time you realize that you've made the wrong choice, it's already too late.
I was known for making all the bad choices in this existence, I was Alaska Brown for a reason. And I guess, that's what Alaska Brown always does, she makes the wrong choices. I make the wrong choices.
(31st of September, Tuesday)
Just like any other god damn day, I wasn't really up to heading for school, but there was also this one thing I could never break and that's a promise. I promised my dad I wouldn't skip anymore, and now why in the world of crab cakes I did that? I had absolutely no idea whatsoever.
My high tops echoed through the corridor as I walked passed everyone, scowling and growling at every curious expression thrown my way. I hadn't gotten the time to do anything this morning and so me looking different, was something that would travel across really fast in Lindbergh.
I quickly walked into the bathroom and pulled my hair into a high bun, pinning it with a couple of bobby pins and then surfed through my black, leather school bag to fish my studded make up bag. After lining my eyes, and covering my lips with freshness, I walked out of the bathroom like nothing ever happened.
Taking a deep breath, I walked out of the bathroom and straight down the hallway into the classroom.
"Well, well, well. It appears to be you're sure not sugar and spice and everything nice after all."
I rolled my eyes, placing my hand on my hip and with the other, covering a fake yawn, "what do you want?"
"Oh come on, don't act all innocent now, we all now what game you're playing," Laura smirked, her British accent awfully sugary.
"Really and what it is?" I asked, rather amused.
"Don't think we all don't know what you're up to, Alaska. It's sad that David thinks you actually like him. I wonder what happens if he finds out the truth?" she said, turning her head to the side, a fake, sad frown drawing itself onto her face.
"What do you want?" I asked, my eyes narrowing at her slight curved lip as it slowly formed a smirk.
"Whatever do you mean by that?" she smiled, her face turning up in every disgusting way and all of a sudden, the features that one would consider the most beautiful turned into a pathetic mess. Her blonde hair and hazel eyes meant the worst in this world.
"Let's not play games here. What do you really want?"
"Stay away from David."
"What makes you think I'll listen to you?" I asked her, trying to sound braver than I looked.
"You will, you don't want him to know all about your plan, do you?" her voice was so spiteful, I was surprised I wasn't dead by now. I wish I would've been.
"What's in it for you anyway?" I asked, placing my hands on my hip. Trying not to look as scared as I felt.
I didn't know what fear ever really was until I passed through it, or more like, it passed through me. It was a dangerous feeling, one that could make people do anything. One that could make me do anything.
"That doesn't matter. You in?" Her smirk felt sculpted, it's like once it stuck there it was never to leave, and that was rather scary all together.
I wasn't scared of what she could do, I was more scared of how David would react and I couldn't do this to him. I couldn't do anything but get to him first, I have to get to him first and keep Laura distracted.
"Uhm."
"Good. All you have to do is stay away from him. It couldn't be that hard, could it?" she questioned, her light plucked eyebrow raised.
"Of course not."
With that I just walked away, not bothering to attend my classes. I knew a call from the principal to my father was waiting, but that was beyond my concern right now. It had to be the last thing on my mind.
911 Emergency, meet me at the cafe.
-Alaska.
I hit send to the girls and got in my car, taking the main lane to the cafe for a longer drive.
The last thing I wanted is David to get hurt right now, thinking that this dare was pretty harmless was the worst thing I've ever done and now I know that the best thing to do is go back to who I was. The Alaska brown that is incapable of loving anyone but herself.
"Hey," I said as soon as I entered our all time favorite cafe. I ordered a black coffee and some strawberry fondue before sitting down at the table where the girls were already waiting for me.
"I can't believe you used the code! You never do, that's like, so unlike you,"
"Is everything okay?"
"I had to miss class."
I rolled my eyes at their typical behavior and waited for them to finish their useless ranting. Like, no one cares what's going on.
"You guys done? I wanna speak," I mumbled, sipping on my coffee.
"eh, yeah," Gwen, looked at me weirdly but I threw her a smile and looked at Mia who asked, "What's wrong with her?" and told her, "I heard that."
Getting a mumble of a apology from her, I gave her a nod and cleared my throat.
"Who told Laura about the bet?" I asked, trying to maintain my calm pretentious character.
"I'm sorry, it kind of slipped," Mia muttered, almost dropping her latte on her own lap.
"You what?" Wendy exclaimed, loud enough for everyone to turn around and look back at us.
"Expected," I rolled my eyes and tapped my nails on the table, trying so hard to be ignorant.
"I can't believe you did that," Gwen cried out, throwing her hands up in frustration and then frowning at Mia.
"We were just discussing things over coffee and it kind of slipped. It's not like she's gonna do anything about it," Mia tried to reason, little did she know that something was already being done about it.
"Well you were wrong," I said, raising my eyebrow and hiding myself into the cup of coffee once again.
"What do you mean?" Wendy asked, leaning forward.
"It doesn't matter, let's just put this dare off, okay? I'm over those games, I really don't care what you guys think is better for me. I just want to get out of everything around me." I explained, trying to keep my expression neutral when I was more than just desperate for them to agree.
"Everything seemed to be fair game until now, what happened?" Gwen inquired. I just raised an eyebrow at her and finished off my coffee, totally ignorant to her question.
"You sure everything is all right?"
"Yeah, Wendy. Everything's perfectly fine. I have to deal with the three Ds in school and you ask me this question, like, seriously?" I laughed, trying hard not to snort at her oblivious behavior.
"What do you mean?"
"Do you have to ask so many questions, Mia?" I asked her, throwing a her a smug smile.
"What in the world is wrong with you today?" Wendy spat, her voice growing quite loud which surprised me because she was always the calm one here.
Feigning innocence, I said, "Whatever do you mean by that."
She just played with the straw of her latte and I excused myself to leave, I didn't want my dad freaking out. He's been down right weird since I started hanging out with David and tutoring Daniel and of course, after punching Dylan.
"Hey dad, i'm home!" I called out.
"Dad?" walking into the kitchen and not finding him there was slightly odd, he must have switched his shift or something for the week.
"Alaska, I haven't seen you today," I jumped at the voice that came from right behind me and placed my hand on my chest, trying to calm my speeding heart.
"God, David. You scared me."I mumbled.
"Sorry."
"All good, what are you doing here?"
"Well, since I haven't seen you around in school, I wanted to return this to you, " he explained, pushing the tapered copy of Looking for Alaska to me and smiling, "I really enjoyed this read."
Completely ignorant to Laura's warning this morning, I smiled back at him and asked, "Which part was your favorite?"
"The labyrinth," he smiled shyly, rubbing the back of his head and then said, "you know, she reminds me so much of you, especially with the book reading."
"I know."
