⇉ Chapter Nine
I don't think my dad was very happy when I told him that I'd be going out, especially when he found out that it was a guy. Honestly why wouldn't he, which dad wouldn't?
But when he saw David, now that was a totally different story to be told. All I can say is that it was a pretty eventful evening. And dramatic.
( 25th of September, Thursday)
Evening :
Being confused with how you feel, is itself a very horrible feeling and feeling something whilst you're trying to figure out how you actually feel wasn't exactly a cherry on top of the cake, drink... whatever.
I was seated on the bar stool in my kitchen whilst my dad was cooking dinner for himself and asked David to tag along, who gently declined and said that we were going to do just that.
It wasn't very simple when my dad saw me walking down the stairs to answer the door;
"You're grounded," he said sternly, crossing his hands over his chest.
"Oh come on dad, you don't even know how to ground me. Plus, I've already been out yesterday and it didn't really bother now, did it?" I said, smiling as innocently as I could. I couldn't make David wait anymore, that wasn't very nice. Not like I was ever nice or anything, but I was really trying, even though I didn't know why.
"I'll google it."
I laughed, "What? You're going to google how to ground me? Go ahead dad, you're to nice to even that," I raised my eyebrow and mimicked his position, trying hard not to burst into fits of laughter.
His expression fell and he laughed, and I did so too. It was nice watching my father laugh. I loved to see him happy. He was such a good man, friend and father and I felt bad for being what I was, but sometimes I just couldn't help it. I am to focused on saving myself, that I cannot afford to lose everything just to understand how everybody around me felt. I sighed and smiled at him.
"I love you, dad," I murmured slowly and quietly.
His eyes softened and his arms were stretched in front, asking for a hug and so I went in for one.
"Well, this is getting emotional," I laughed.
"It's not everyday that I get a hug from my daughter."
"I love you, dad," I said, again.
"I love you to, baby girl."
I groaned, "Don't call me that. I'm not a baby anymore."
"Whatever you say," he chuckled and released me.
"Can I open the door now?" I asked, showing him my teeth in an attempt to ask him for permission. It was one of my very odd habits.
"Okay. Let's who you've got here," he said as he opened the door. A gasp escaped his lips as he took in the sight of David.
"Oh my boy, I would have never thought I'd see you again," My dad comments, "Come in! Come in, son!"
I smiled shyly at him and his cheeks were already crimson from my dad's welcoming gestures. I was myself rather surprised by his sudden reaction to him. I wouldn't have thought my dad would be so happy to see anyone. He wasn't even that happy to see me. Now I was jealous. No fair - Just kidding, of course.
Following both the boys into the kitchen, I sat on the bar stool right in front of David.
And that is how I ended up here, with my dad frying up some eggs and bacon for his very famous greasy sandwich that I haven't had for years and probably would not have for the next few years.
"Dad," I whined, "can we please leave now?"
I looked up at David who hasn't said a word so far but shuffle through his pockets now and then. When he caught me looking at him, he smiled shyly and I have him a thumbs up. My dad was a handful whenever he could be and that wasn't something everyone could handle, especially David.
One thing I was really glad about was that my dad did not question David's disappearance from my life that happened years ago because it was mainly my fault and I didn't want to be going through this right now. I knew that it would be pretty soon that I'd have to lay out my cards, but right now was just not the right time.
"You go ahead kids and have fun and David?" My dad called out, smiling at him. His eyes danced with warmed. I could see David smiling back at him from the corner of my eye and couldn't help but join in the smiling club that occurred.
"Please do look after my daughter, she can be very reckless and maybe a little bit violent sometimes," he chuckled and the smile on David's face dropped whilst mine was replaced by utter shock. How dare he? He's like my dad, he's supposed to say all the good stuff about me. Wow.
"Am not!" I whined, throwing my hands over the side of my head and groaning.
"Let's go," and I grabbed David's hand pulling him out the door.
"So," I murmured as soon as we were locked out and standing on my front porch.
"So... Umm. Are yo..you re-ready to go..leave?" he stuttered, his voice deep and hoarse, his cheeks turning crimson.
I guess we were back to the stuttering and to say that I wasn't waiting for it would be a lie. I very much found it cute.
The cool air brushed my hair and smoothed my skin, it was just the right weather to be outside and I voiced out my thoughts, "Please tell me wherever we are going is gonna be outdoors? It would be a shame to waste such a beautiful weather."
"It's pretty chill outside, don't you think it might get colder?"
"Nope," I said popping the 'p'.
I wasn't really expected to be taken where I was taken too and I was very much excited. The car ride lasted for about thirty minutes and I was pretty much sure that I've eaten of David's head will all the questions that I have been asking.
It felt nice to actually talk, I haven't been doing that in so long that it actually felt odd, but warming at the same time. I did not know what it was like until someone just sat and actually listened, like David did.
"You planned to take me here from the beginning?" I asked, actually curious. Maybe he wanted to take me out somewhere else but changed his mind because I asked him to.
"Well, yes and no. I wanted to take you out to the diner first and then come back here," He muttered, his cheeks flushing slightly and I laughed.
"That's a beautiful sound," He said, smiling at me.
"Huh?"
"Your laugh, it's a beautiful sound."
"Oh."
"What?"
"Nothing, I am not a big fan of compliments and that's all," I murmured, looking at the waves that were hitting my feet, my shoes in my hands and my jeans rolled up a little bit.
"Why not?" He asked, his eyebrow perked up and his eyes popping slightly. I think this was the first time ever that I had seen him without a cap or beanie on his head.
I didn't know how to answer that, it wasn't easy to explain how I felt from the inside. Maybe I was scared to figure out that someone might have it worse or maybe one might not understand what's its like. "I mean, beautiful? It's just a word, just like a bunch of other people throw at each other. I always wanted to be an art. It's a privilege, you know?" I finally answered.
"Okay, let me rephrase that... In a room full of paintings, you are the only masterpiece that I cannot stop staring at," he grinned, and pocked his tongue out.
Giggling, I said, "Did you just quote a book?"
"What? I can't do that?"
"But that's not fair!" I laughed for what seemed like the tenth time right now. It was just so easy to be with him.
"What's not fair about that? I was just stating the truth," he muttered, running a hand through his curls.
"I like your hair," I blurted out and then covered my mouth with my hand.
"Uh, thanks," he replied, rubbing the back of his head with his right hand.
It was silent for a while until my stomach decided to call for the whales which was rather embarrassing.
"Are you hungry?" he asked, looking up at me.
"Not really," I bit lip. I wasn't one to eat all the time, or at all.
"Let's go get some food then," he said, grabbing my hand swiftly pulling me up. Pushed against him, my hands were flat on his chest and my hair all over my face. I blew a little bit so that the curtain of my hair would open up and smiled awkwardly.
He brushed his lips against my forehead.
