⇉ Chapter Four
One thing every high schooler dreaded, were Monday mornings, just Mondays in general. And of course, just like any other highschooler, I hated it too.
Mondays were like cold pancakes in the morning with no maple syrup. They were like drenched black, sour coffee with no sugar. They were like getting a legal Divorce on winter mornings with your bed through the court. They were like tasting honey for the first time, like having to suck on a lemon that's clenched between your teeth. And most importantly, they were like a final nail in the coffin.
(5th of September, 2011 - Monday)
"I like him."
"So go ahead and tell him that," I muttered, annoyed by Gwen's insecure behavior. I had better things to do than sit and listen to her useless chatter about boys that are more importantly useless. Ugh.
"I can't," she sighed, a frown settling onto her face.
"Why not?" I asked, getting all the more annoyed by each second.
"Because he loves her!" She exclaimed, pointing her finger towards the girl whose hair, Dylan - Gwen's crush - was pulling. They looked cute, but I obviously wasn't going to say that to her, she'd throw a tantrum and possibly pull all my newly straightened hair out.
"He's eighteen, he can't possibly be serious about her, or love her for that matter of fact. Don't even get me started on love. I do not understand what you're stressing about at all," I wondered, flailing my hand.
"He's been chasing after her for seven years, seven goddamn years. He loves her!" she argued back, her frown deepening as she crossed her hands on her chest and furrowed her eyebrows, looking at them. I was more afraid of the fact that she could burn the poor girls blonde head with her penetrating gaze.
"He doesn't love her." I knew I was being mean and stubborn, but she had to get her head out of the gutter and get her crap straight. Not literally of course.
"He lo-"
"He doesn't love her, he's in love with the idea of her," I interjected, making her shut up and cock her head to the side, probably challenging me to say something more and I did, but not immediately.
"What do you mean?" She asked, her eyebrows scrunched up together. It seemed like she was doing only that today, with her light brown eyes feigning hurt. As much as it didn't bother me, I hated people who showed emotion. I thought they were weak.
"See, you like him? Go ahead and tell him that, because worst case scenario, he wouldn't care. Best case scenario is, he likes you back. Both of which aren't exactly possible, so it doesn't make a difference really," I said, my eyes roaming around the school cafeteria, bored.
"You're hopeless," she sighed.
"I know."
My eyes sat ashore on Wendy and Mia who were headed towards our direction. They grinned, almost splitting their faces into half. To say that I found that rather fishy was an understatement.
"Haaaaaii," Mia finked, almost dropping her tray full of food onto my lap. I narrowed my eyes back at her. Could she be any more bunglesome? And why is it that my lap always magnetizes all the food that was ever in her hands or words of process. Not fair. A big no, no. One day, she will sure as hell spill something on me. I must start carrying an extra pair of jeans with me that's a definite.
"Oops, sorry," she mumbled, blushing slightly.
"You're very inept, Mia," I said, rolling my eyes.
"Oh come on, Alaska. Don't be so mean," Wendy smiled, as she took a seat next to Gwen, who was still looking at Dylan dreamily. Oh, whatever do I do with these girls?
"I'm not mean, just straightforward," I argued back, taking a sip from my awful cup of coffee.
"That does not mean you say everything that comes first to your mind," Mia frowned, probably trying to emphasize her words.
"Actually, it does. But whatever," I muttered, getting angry. Why is that I always had to explain myself to everyone around me?
Leaning forward so that I can hear her better, Wendy whispered, her head pointing at Gwen. "What's up with her?"
"She's all over him, like literally," I managed to croak out, trying not to laugh at her ridiculous behaviour.
"What? Does it gross you out, Alaska?" Mia asked, her small voice teasing and on edge. How she managed to speak like a mouse was beyond my way of pondering.
"Yes, it is absolutely grossing out," I responded. It wasn't disgusting that she liked a guy, it was disgusting that she liked him, Dylan. That guy literally does every living thing that has two legs. In other words, he's a man twitch and that is what is disgusting, which makes Gwen wishing him disgusting. What in the world of cows and Dumbledore's beautiful beard happened to Gwen being saucy? She's supposed to be exactly that at the moment! Not me.
"Anyway, what happened to you and lover boy?" Wendy asked, her perfect eyebrow raised. Does everyone around me have to be so god darn perfect?
"Nothing," I mumbled, looking down at my coffee. One thing our school really, naturally sucked at, was making coffee. It tasted like mud, not like I ever tasted mud before, but you get what I am trying to convey. Hopefully.
"Lyiiiiiing," Mia sang and I raised my eyebrow at her, challenging her to say something more. She clamped her mouth shut and bit into her what looked like a turkey sandwich, I wasn't quite sure by the looks of it.
"We agreed that you would be updating us," Wendy reasoned and I suspired.
"Get that lady's attention and listen carefully because I won't be saying anything more than once," I spat, trying to get it over with. Saying something that happens in my everyday life, was not my piece of cake and what happened yesterday? Was just the cherry on top that I really, really needed right now. Do note the sarcasm.
Gwen's wide eyes slanted slightly and she tried to suppress a frown, but we could see further than that. Instead of commenting on it, like I always do, I just started on with my story telling. Looking at my watch, I counted exactly how slow I have to speak before the bell rings, and I saunter off. Two minutes, all good. I think I've got it.
"All right, so I went to his place on Friday, he asked me in, by the way, and he taught me a little of math, the dreaded subject. I then told him that I was bored and we should play truth and dare. I went first so I asked him and he said dare. I told him-" I was cut off by the bell ringing and winked at the girls who were narrowing their eyes back at me. Standing up and grabbing my black bag, I pulled it over my shoulder, and before leaving said, "I dared him to kiss me and he did."
Poor Mia was choking on her sandwich, whilst Wendy was patting her on her back, which I wasn't sure was exactly helping. Does it even help? I always thought it worsens the situation. Gwen was sitting there just struck down. And me? Just like I planned, was taking the air out of the school's cafeteria.
Last class and I still didn't see David around. I wondered if he had decided to ignore me after what happened on Friday? But if he was, he wouldn't have kissed me in the first place. Positive thinking, my child. You need to win this bet.
Speaking, or should I say thinking. Thinking of the devil, David was standing by his locker, his head dropped inside like he was digging for something.
Walking up to him and flipping my hair as casually as I could, I pretended to stifle a yawn as his eyes widened when they landed on me. "Looking for this?" I asked, pulling out a Math text from behind me.
"Yeah, and I was also looking for you everywhere today," He sounded out. I didn't think he was telling the truth, but I did not voice my opinion out and just let it go.
"Hmm, looking for Alaska." I smiled.
"Are you quoting John Green?"
"Very much I am, David. Very much," I said, grinning as I placed my hand on his shoulder and asked. "So, do you need a ride home?"
"That would be nice, I... I guess," He stuttered. Oh, how I missed that, I almost thought he'd lost the trait he'd inherited.
Crossing my arm with his, we walked passed the hallways and into the parking lot that was almost empty by this hour. Oh how a few seconds of being late could do a miracle of no traffic on the way back home.
"So, off to your place for Math?" I asked, as I got in and started the engine.
Shutting the door, he turned to me and frowned, "Maybe next time?"
"Sure." I gritted through my teeth, turning my head to look straight and start the engine. I didn't like the fact that he just disregarded me like that. What plans after school on a Monday could he possible have? I don't understand why he was acting all awkward all of a sudden. Isn't he like supposed to be nice and ask me to come in for tea? Not like I was an English Queen or anything, but still.
And as you all may have guessed, the awkward silence greeted us as always.
"So..." he said, hesitating for a moment before continuing. "Looking for Alaska is one of your favorites?"
"Yes, it is," I smiled, looking at him and then concentrating back on the road.
"Cool. Umm... Col... could you quote something?"
"Y'all smoke to enjoy it. I smoke to die." I quoted, taking a left turn and then another left, driving past the little cute houses. I tried to drive slower, to keep our conversation going.
"Eh, deep."
"Yeah, the whole book is. I could lend it to you if you'd like, but I am not sure you'd like something like that. It's an electrifying debut," I said, my eyes still on the road.
"No, that would be cool. I'd give it a read," He said, his voice cracking slightly.
"Thanks for the ride, again." He enounced.
"Yeah, no problem."
"Yeah."
"Bye."
"Bye."
For a moment he stayed there. Looking at me and me looking through him right out the window. I turned to look at him, and he kept looking at me. We kept looking at each other for that one moment. I actualized that I enjoyed looking at him. I really did.
And then he was gone.
