⇉ Chapter Five

I enjoyed laughing when I was with David as much as I enjoyed smoking and trust me, I enjoyed smoking very, very much. Of course I never figured out how much I enjoyed doing things until I was actually doing them and that was exactly when I realized that I enjoyed doing them. If that even made any sense.

There was also a few habits that I've had that my friends found weird and I never understood why. I mean, there was never something wrong with wearing fresh red painted nails and red painted lips everyday, I've been doing that since I turned sixteen. Or was it?

(23rd of September, Tuesday)

"You don't have a reason to smoke though," he muttered, so quietly that I could barely hear him.

"I do more choking than smoking, David. Trust me," I said, inhaling the cigarette that was placed between my long fingers, with it's end slightly smudged with red whale fat from my painted lips.

"But why do you have to do it?"

He asked that as if he wasn't doing the same, as he lay there with his stick in between his teeth, inhaling sharply and so goddamn fast.

"Because 'smoke to die', right?" I replied, looking him straight in the eye. His eyes were only an emerald green, but when I looked into them, I saw so many different colors.

"I don't understand you."

"See, smoking is a pretentious metaphor, just like life is. People think it is harmful, but it is not." I said, inhaling the cigarette again, trying to exhale smoke rings but choke instead. He pats me slowly on my back and I nod a thank you right at him. He just smiled and I continued, "Because you die when you have to, not because of something, but because goddamn it. God wanted you to. Simply because life wanted to gift you to death at that moment, or god, or whoever you believe in."

"It is very, very difficult to understand you, Alaska." He murmured, smashing the head of his cigarette into the very green grass. We lay on the grass of the very green park that he's taken me to last time and I enjoyed spending time like this with him, time alone.

"We should get to school," He stated.

"It's like only seven in the morning right now," I grumbled, turning to face him and only to realize that his face was up too close. His eyes widened, cheeks turning crimson and lips parted. Leaning in closer to place a small kiss on his full lips, he turned his head away and said, "Let's get going or we'll be late. It is a very long ride."

"Okay."

After what seemed like the worst awkward silence that happened between me and David in his car, I wasn't even surprised he ran off as soon as he got his car locked in the school parking lot and left me behind without so much as a good bye. Rude, but all right. I didn't understand why he wouldn't let me kiss him, he's done it before. Why can't I do it now? It's been four days since the bet and I haven't made much progress except for that kiss and if I didn't get on it soon, I don't think I'll be able to get it over with in sixteen days. That's just not possible. Not like twenty days sounded more realistic.

I walked towards my locker alone only to find Wendy, Gwen and a sheepishly smiling Mia standing right there. Once they got their minds set up to something, hear it from me, they're not going to let it go.

"What's up?" I greeted, opening up my locker and throwing my bag inside to grab my first lesson's books.

"We're here to interrogate you," Mia squeaks, her eyes gleaming. She was petite and short. She was also the youngest of the four of us. Her dark brown hair was cut into a short bob that was always layered on her face and with all her small, skinny and flat body, her cheeks were surprisingly too chubby. She was a cute little thing. Adorable puff of cotton candy.

"Aha," I gnarled finally looking up to face them. I lean into the now closed locker and fold my arms across my chest, trying hard to listen to them.

"But before we do, guess what?" Gwen exclaimed, clapping her hands together.

"What?" I groaned, rolling my eyes.

"Did you see Susan's new hairdo? I guess she though cutting her hair and dying it brighter would make it look better," Wendy giggled.

"But instead it's like putting lipstick on the pig," Mia added, her eyes shining and she literally bounces. Oh girls, whatever was the reason for the love of so much gossip I will never find out.

"Wait, who in this fine world is Susana?" I asked confused. The three stopped talking and looked at me weirdly, like I've just grown two heads or three.

"She's Dylan current booty call," Gwen muttered, crossing her arms and rolling her eyes. They looked like they were about to fall off her sockets. Poor Gwen.

"And it's Susan, not Susana," Mia said, joining the eye rolling club.

"Whatever," I maundered and the bell rang. Pulling on a cheeky grin, I waved my fingers at them and said, "Ciao, girls. Can't afford to be late to Math class."

Throwing them a final wink, I turned on my heel and stalked off, my black heels clanking on the school's ceramic tiled floor.

Five minutes into my Math class and I was already ready to hit my head against the wall and I was about to do just that when my teacher had to call me out, "Mrs. Brown, what's the coefficient of x?"

"I'm sorry, what?"

"What number is with an x in the following equation?" She asked with her very annoying voice, pointing at the very annoying board with her very annoying marker.

"Umm.. a 2?"

"And what do we do next?" She asked, smirking slightly. Not as innocent as we act, now are we, Mrs. Bond.

Casting my eyes, I confidently said, "I have absolutely no idea."

Her smiled faltered and it was my turn to smile smugly. From the corner of my eye I could see David smacking his head and Daniel laughs to himself. Idiots.

"Please place your daily record on my table right now, Miss Brown." She said, frowning slightly. I can't believe she's actually going to do that. Squatting down, which was as hard as a possibility of killing my teacher was, I took out my purple register and placed it on her wooden piece of furniture that she called a table. I always wondered how it never shattered with how it looked, I didn't think it cannot handle so much as a pencil. A poor piece of wood.

"You may sit down now," Mrs. Bond spat, contracting her eyes back at me before going back to explicate whatever it is that she was explicating all this time.

Re-applying my red lipstick and circling the black liner around my eyes, I made sure I looked all right and dark as ever. I heard a noise all too familiar that I heard only three times and I think it was Gwen.

"Gwen?" I called out, looking under a particular stall only to find her pink flats, I sighed. I've only heard her cry three times before. When a) Her cat died, b) She broke her leg back in sixth grade and c) when she wasn't invited to her friend's party in grade eight because she had a fight with her friend. As you see, crying was very rare when it came to her and to say that I was surprised was an understatement.

"Hmm?" she murmured.

"Could you please open up the stall?" and she did. I gasped at the sight in front of me. Her hair was jutted in different directions and her nose and cheeks were pink. Hell, her whole face was swollen, including her eyes that were red and puffy. Her black mascara was leaking, staining her baby pink button up. Poor thing.

"What's wrong?" I asked, genuinely sad for her. I kept my voice as gentle as I could. I might be mean and twitchy, but one thing else that I was was a dedicated friend and I wouldn't let anyone do such things to my friends.

"It was a dare!" She sobbed, "it was a..a ear..freaking dare! He..e..kissed me and the..y, they all laughed at e..me!" her sobs turned into wails and I dug into my school bag to retrieve my makeup kit and hand it over to her, "here, use this. It has everything you'll need to make you look better. I'll go handle the rest, just trust me," when I saw her giving me a weak nod, I stood up from my squatted position, and stalked off the girl's bathroom and into the school's cafeteria because I knew that's where he would be. She didn't have to tell me who he was for me to know. It was just too obvious.

As soon as I spotted him, I walked up. My strides long, loud and confident. Yay to my heels power. I'll thank them later. Smirking at the sudden place that went quiet, I stood in front of him and gave him a look of disgust. He was sprawled all over the bench with two twitches on his lap. "Move it ladies," I growled through my gritted teeth. The one with brown locks stood up and left, smart girl, but the blonde one? Well, she was blonde for a reason.

"What you think he's your boyfriend now? Think again," I smirked.

"Who the hell are you?" She screeched. Her voice was so pitched. I wondered how everyone else could bear listening to her.

Grabbing a fistful of her hair, I smirked up at her and said, "Listen you slut, when I tell you to move that little flat crap of yours, you move it. Do you understand?"

Giving me a curt nod, she ran off her short skirt becoming a belt, her underwear exposed to the world with everyone else around laughing. Aww, unicorns. How cute.

Dylan how was all the while amused by all this, was grinning up at me. "Sup babe?"

I smiled sweetly, too sweetly trying my best not to show teeth, because I was sure that if I did it would not end well. It wouldn't end well anyway, but there was no backing off now. Placing my feet on both the side of his, I place my butt on his lap and pressed my front to his and my lips to close to his. Leaving a red stain there.

A lot of 'damns' and 'oooh she's hot' and whistles erupted from the crowd whilst the others watched. The plan was working perfectly. I waited for everyone to quiet down and said, "If you ever, ever mess with any of my friends. I will make sure your private destination has nothing to do with the next generation. Do you understand?"

All he did was laugh and release me, "how cute babe, but you're no threat to me."

Raising my fist high enough to connect it with his jaw, I did just that.

No one moved. No one said anything. I was off his lap when the principal came in along with the nurse. Dylan was throwing profanities whilst I smiled smugly. Upon hearing the principal's voice everyone sat back to do what they were doing before I came in.

"Miss Brown, my office. Right now!" He yelled.

"Sure, whatever." I muttered.

"What made you do something like that?" Mr. Boombottom, my principal, asked as soon as we were in his office.

I rolled my eyes at his pretentious calm behaviour and faked a smile, "He hurt my friend and I didn't like that."

"So you turn to violence?"

"How else do you talk to people like him?" I asked, raising an eyebrow and bringing my hand up to stifle a yawn.

"You're as dense as him, so you expect to be punched when you hurt someone?"

I just narrowed my eyes at him and waited.

"Are you purposely trying to get suspended?" he asked, raising both his eyebrows. I salute the guy for being so calm. Maybe I should join his calm club?

"And deny you the pleasure of seeing me in school. Now why would I do that?" I laughed.

To say that my dad was royally pissed was an understatement, what I didn't know is that he would put me under home arrest. I would explain plenty of times that what I did must not have been very right, but it seemed like the only thing I've had then.

"I really don't know what's going on with you anymore. Why don't you talk to me?" He argued, his eyes showing concern but that didn't bother me at all.

"There's nothing to say."

"We'll have to talk about sending you to your mother!" he yelled.

"Don't even think about it!" I screamed as I ran up the stairs and slammed the door shut.

I stayed under my duvet the whole day then, crying. Because that's what I did best. I wish he doesn't have to mention it ever again. I will never forgive her. Never.
