Running Away

Danny's head was pounding as he walked to the door someone was hitting as hard as they could. When he opened the door his aunt Marge walked in carrying an umbrella and Jack came in right behind her. He felt horrible, nearly half a day going through an episode usually drained most of his energy.

Danny took a deep breath before looking at Jack, "Um, I need you to sign this."

Jack glanced at the paper, "What is it?"

"Nothing important, school stuff."

Jack walked away, "Later, if you behave."

Danny wanted to make a snarky comment but he kept his mouth shut Marge looked at him, "Oh, your still here are you?" Danny simply nodded, "Won't even respond when someone's talking to you, it was good of my brother to keep you." She leaned closer to Jack, "Would have been straight to an orphanage had he been dumped in my doorstep Jack."

Jazz started laughing at her show and Marge practically smothered her while Jazz wouldn't even acknowledge the woman. Jack looked at him, "Take Marge's suitcase upstairs."

Danny nodded again and took it upstairs, time passed surprisingly quickly, thank god, and it was dinner time. He collected the empty plates while Jack offered Marge some wine, when he glanced at Marge giving her dog, who actually liked him, she scowled. "What are you looking at?"

Danny just looked away and Marge looked at Jack, "Where did you send the boy Jack?"

Jack looked at her, "St. Brutus's, it's a fine institution for hopeless cases."

Marge looked at him, "And they use a cane at St. Brutus's boy?"

Danny looked at her, "Oh yeah, all the time." If by that you actually mean wands for casting spell, but she didn't need to know that. Danny turned his back on her and leaned against the counter as he thought about his school, he missed it.

He'd stayed in contact with his friends as much as he could, Madam Pomfrey and Professor McGonagall checked in on him as well. He also went to visit his friend, now boyfriend, which he was ecstatic about, so this summer hadn't been too bad so far. Then he heard something that made all of that come to a screeching halt, his blood felt like it was starting to boil.

"You mustn't blame yourself about how this one turned out Jack, it's all to do with blood, bad blood, what is it the boys father did Maddie?"

"Nothing, he didn't work, he was unemployed."

Marge laughed a little, "And a drunk too no doubt."

Danny growled to himself, "Lies."

Marge looked at him, "What did you say?"

Danny turned and glared at her, "He wasn't a drunk."

His anger flared and the lights started to flicker before the glass in Marge's hand shattered, whether he should blame his ghost powers or his magic he didn't know. Marge laughed a little and looked at Maddie after the woman screamed in alarm, "Don't fuss Maddie, I have a very firm grip."

Jack looked at him, "I think it's about time you went to bed."

Marge looked at Jack, "Quiet you." Marge then turned to him, "You, clean it up."

Danny grabbed a hand towel as he took a deep breath and walked over to the table before he started cleaning the glass from the table. Marge continued, "Actually, it has nothing to do with the father, it's always to do with the mother. You see it all the time with dogs, if there's something wrong with the bitch then there's something wrong with the pup."

Danny glared at her, "And what the hell would you know about my parents?!"

Danny felt his anger flare again but he couldn't force it down, not this time, and Marge looked at him. "Right, let me tell you-."

Danny didn't give her a chance to continue because her chair slid out from under her and smashed into the wall. Several lights broke and the TV turned to static, a few of the windows even cracked, Danny chose that time to escape. He went straight to his room and he threw his lamp at the wall before sitting on his bed and burying his head in his hands.

He then looked at a picture he had of his parents next to his bed, they looked so happy, he took a deep breath before getting up and packing his suitcase. Of course right as he was about to leave Jack barged into his room and before Danny knew it he hit the wall. He somehow managed to get past Jack and grab his things before running out of the house and down the street.

He wasn't sure how far he ran or where he was when he stopped but he was out of breath and everything hurt. It was dark he didn't know nor care about what was around him, he saw that he was in a park but that didn't matter. He let go of his things and fell to his knees, he cried, he couldn't even remember the last time he cried.

It had been years, no amount of pain or loneliness could make him cry anymore but this just broke him. He didn't know why, he didn't know how, but after years he was finally crying and he didn't even really know why. Then he heard a twig snap and he looked around, after a few seconds he saw a large black dog emerge from some bushes across the street.

He instinctively took out his wand but he didn't actually feel threatened, there was something strange about this black dog a short of human intelligence shown in it's eyes. Yet despite the human presence Danny didn't feel threatened, he felt a strange sense of trust. When the black dog looked at him it actually looked concerned, like it wanted to know why he was crying.

Danny took a step but because the ground was wet from when it had been raining and he wasn't paying attention he fell. He wiped the tears away and a bus pulled up in front of him and a person was standing at the entrance. He read from a paper, "Welcome to the Night Bus, emergency transport for a stranded witch or wizard. My name is Stan Shunpike and I will be your conductor for this evening."

Stan then put the paper in his pocket and looked at Danny, he looked confused when he saw that Danny was on the ground. "What you doin' down there?"

Danny raised an eyebrow, "I tripped."

"What you fell over for?"

"It's not because I wanted to, do you think I just fall in my spare time as a hobby?"

"Well come on then, let's not wait for the grass to grow."

Danny glanced around the bus at where the black dog had been before, it was gone Stan then followed his line of sight and peaked around the bus. "What you lookin' at?"

Danny shrugged, "Nothing important I guess."

Stan looked at him, "Well come on then, in." Danny went to grab his stuff and Stan stopped him, "No, no, no, I'll grab this, you get in."

Danny shrugged before getting on and he took a brief look around before sitting on the bed at the front of the bus. Stan used a strange contraption Danny had never seen before to give him a ticket, when Danny took it Stan tapped on the glass at the front. "Take it away Earn."

A shrunken head then spoke, "Yeah take it away Earn, it's gonna be a bumpy ride."

The bus jerked into motion and Danny held onto the bed he was sitting on for dear life as it moved. When the bed moved closer to Stan again he looked at him, "What did you say your name was again?"

"I didn't tell you my name before."

"Well whereabouts are you headed?"

Danny thought for a split second, "The Leaky Cauldron." Danny paused for a second, "Won't the muggles see us?"

Stan looked confused, "Muggles, they don't see nothin' do they?"

The shrunken head answered Stan but Danny was too focused on not dying when they bus turned to pay attention. When there was an old lady in the street the bus jerked to a stop and the head counted, when she was out of the way it took off again. Danny saw that Stan was reading a newspaper and the picture on the front caught his attention, "Who's that guy, on the front of the newspaper?"

Stan looked at the picture, "Who is that, who is-." Stan cut himself off before turning the picture toward him again, "That is Sirius Black that is, don't tell me you never been hearin' of Sirius Black."

"The guy has a name that sounds like a wrapper that never got famous enough to even have his songs played on the radio."

Stan leaned toward him, "He's a murderer, got himself locked up in Azkaban for it."

"Then how did he get out?"

"That's the question isn't it, he's the first one that done it, he was a big supporter of you-know-who, recon you've heard of him."

"How could I not?" The bus then almost ran into two other buses and the Night Bus seemed to cave in on itself until it was in the clear. Danny groaned, "That was unpleasant."

The bus turned after a few seconds before it eventually stopped and hit a car just enough to set off the car alarm. Stan spoke, "The Leaky Caldron."

Danny rubbed his head, his head hurt even more after he had been tossed around like a rag doll. "Thanks."

A bald man then walked onto the bus, "Ah, Mr. Phantom, at last."

The man carried Danny's things off the bus as the teen climbed off, the bus left and he followed the man into the Leaky Caldron. The man gestured for him to go up the stairs and told someone else which room to take his suitcase to.

Danny wondered what the hell was going on, when he got into the room he saw his owl and he smiled, "Hedwig."

She made a happy noise when she saw him and Danny smoothed her feathers while the man spoke. "Right smart bird you've got there Mr. Phantom, arrived here just five minutes before yourself."

Someone then cleared their throat and Danny looked at them as they began to talk and the bald man led him over to a desk the other man was standing behind. "As the Minister for magic it is my duty to inform you Mr. Phantom that your uncle's sister's memory was modified. She will have no recollection of the incident whatsoever, so that's that and no harm done, pea soup?"

"No, thanks, but you're seriously telling me that I'm not in trouble."

"Oh come now Danny, the Ministry doesn't send people to Azkaban for breaking some lights." The bald man laughed but immediately stopped when the Minister, Cornelius Fudge if Danny remembered correctly, looked at him. Fudge continued, "On the other hand running away like that, given the state of things, was very, very irresponsible."

"Well then someone must have forgotten to send me a postcard because I have no idea what the hell your talking about."

"We have a killer on the loose."

"You mean Sirius Black, the guy I heard about not even five minutes ago on the bus here, what does that have to do with me?"

Fudge laughed, "Nothing of course, your safe, that's what matters, and tomorrow you'll be on your way back to Hogwarts." Fudge's tone gave away the fact that he was lying, and yet another mystery presents itself, time to do some Sherlocking. "Oh, these are your new school books, I took the liberty of having them brought here for you, now Tom will show you to your room."

Tom practically forced him out of his seat and Danny stopped at the door, "Hedwig." Hedwig flew over to him and landed on his arm before Fudge spoke again. "Oh by the way Danny, whilst your here it would be best if you didn't wonder."

Oh wonder he fucking shall, don't tell him not to do something because then he'll want to do it. Nonetheless for now he went to his room and tried to sleep, it didn't work, he didn't sleep at all, he hated his insomnia. Some time in the morning after he got up he looked out the window when a train passed before he heard one of his books make a weird noise.

He knew books shouldn't make weird noises so he picked it up and took the belt that was keeping it closed off. He saw that the book had eyes, and a mouth, and he ran his finger down the spine like he often did with his books. He was fairly certain it was just a habit at this point and the book fell open, he thought it was going to try and bite him or something.

Danny shrugged before putting the book down, "Don't chew on any of my stuff and I'll leave the belt off."

The book seemed satisfied with that and when he walked out of his room and saw an orange cat chasing a rat. He was headed in the same direction so he just followed the animals and when he got to the top of the stairs he heard shouting. "I'm warning you Hermione, keep that bloody beast of yours away from Scabbers or I'll turn it into a tea cozy."

"It's a cat Ronald what do you expect, it's in his nature."

"A cat, is that what they told you, looks more like a pig with hair if you ask me."

"That's rich coming from the owner of that smelly old shoe brush, it's alright Crookshanks, you just ignore the mean little boy."

Danny smirked, "Children, please, if your going to fight at least let me get some popcorn and a chair."

Ron looked at him, "Danny!"

Hermione turned around and smiled at him, "Danny!"

The three sat down at a table and Ron told him what happened over the summer, his family had gone to Egypt. Danny smirked, "Egypt, nice, I've never been there, how was it?"

"Brilliant, loads of old stuff like mummies, tombs, even Scabbers enjoyed himself."

Hermione spoke, "You know the Egyptians used to worship cats."

Ron looked at her, "Yeah, along with a dung beetle."

The rest of the Weasley family then came in and George spoke, "Not flashing that clip about again are you Ron?"

Ron looked at his brother, "I haven't shown anyone."

Fred spoke, "No not a soul, not unless you count Tom."

George spoke, "The day maid."

Fred, "The night maid."

George, "The Cook."

Fred, "That bloke who came to fix the toilet."

George, "And that wizard from Bergum."

Molly Weasley walked into the room and spotted him, "Danny."

Danny stood up, "Hey Mrs. Weasley."

"Good to see you dear."

"Likewise."

"Now you've got everything you need?"

"Yup."

"Yes, all of your books."

"Just upstairs."

"And all of your clothes?"

"Oh god I hope so."

Molly smiled, "Good boy."

Arthur spoke, "Danny Phantom."

"Hey Mr. Weasley." Arthur held out his hand and Danny made a rare exception and shook it, "Danny, wonder if I might have a word?"

"Sure." Now Danny was wondering what was going on, it seemed like something was bothering the man.

Arthur led him away from the others before speaking, "Looking forward to the new term?"

"Oh yeah, I'm definitely ready to go back to school."

Arthur leaned against a support next to him, "Danny, there are some within the Ministry who would strongly discourage me from divulging what I'm about to reveal to you." A few people walked by them and Arthur led him away, "But I think you need to know the facts. You are in danger, grave danger."

Danny looked slightly curious, "I'm going to take a guess and say it has to do with Sirius Black."

Arthur looked him in the eye, "What do you know about Sirius Black Danny?"

"Just that he escaped from Azkaban."

"And do you know why?" Danny shook his head, "Thirteen years ago, when you stopped..."

Arthur stopped short of saying Voldemort's name and Danny spoke, "Voldemort."

"Don't say his name." Danny just shrugged and Arthur continued, "When you stopped you-know-who Black lost everything. But to this day he still remains a faithful servant, in his mind you are the only thing that stands in the way of you-know-who returning to power. And that is why he has escaped from Azkaban, to find you-."

Danny cut him off, "And kill me, this is just becoming a trend isn't it?"

Arthur paused, "Danny, I want you to swear to me that whatever you might hear you won't go looking for Black."

Danny hesitated, he couldn't promise that, he was saved when Molly called for everyone to pack their things so they could head to the train. Danny left before Arthur could stop him and got his things together before they headed to the platform and got on the train. Molly quickly ran to give Ron Scabbers just before the train started leaving and people waved goodbye to their respective family members.

When he, Ron, and Hermione were on the train and looking for a place to sit Danny told them about what happened at his aunt and uncles, leaving out the aftermath. "I didn't mean to break everything, it just happened."

Ron laughed a little, "Brilliant."

Hermione didn't look amused, "Honestly Ronald it's not funny, Danny was lucky not to be expelled."

Danny shrugged, "I think I was in more danger of getting arrested, I would have ruled that prison within a week."

Ron spoke, "I still think it's brilliant."

Hermione rolled her eyes and looked in a car that was empty aside from one sleeping man. "Come on, everywhere else is full."

They all stepped inside and sat down, Ron looked at the man, "Wonder who he is."

Hermione answered, "Professor R.J. Lupin."

Ron looked at her, "Do you know everything?" Ron looked at Danny, "How is it she know everything?"

Hermione pointed to the man's suitcase, "It's on his suitcase Ronald."

Ron looked at the suitcase, "Oh."

Danny listened to the man's heartbeat for a minute and when he was sure the man was indeed asleep Danny closed the door to their car. Danny looked at Ron and Hermione, "Okay, so I've got some news."
