Madness

Hagrid took Danny to the city and by then it was day and it wasn't raining there, Danny actually felt like he could breath for some reason. Usually it was like there was a weight on his chest that stopped him from breathing right but now it was gone, just like that. As Danny walked down the street next to Hagrid he read through the list of things he needed for Hogwarts.

"Okay, so where am I supposed to get this stuff, Amazon?" Danny looked at the list again, "Where do you even buy an owl?"

Hagrid laughed a little, "You can get all this stuff if you know where to go."

Danny thought that answer was a bit vague, "Is it some sort of invisible magic shop?"

Hagrid laughed a little before walking up to a blank black door and opening it to reveal what looked like some sort of bar on the inside. When the man behind the counter saw Hagrid he smiled, "Ah, Hagrid, the usual I presume?"

Hagrid smiled back, "No thanks Tom, I'm on official Hogwarts business." Hagrid patted him on the shoulder which greatly confused the halfa, "Just helping young Danny here buy his school supplies."

Tom stared at him in shock, "Bless my soul, it's Danny Phantom."

All of a sudden everyone in the building seemed to pause before looking directly at him, you could literally hear a pin drop. Then an older man walked up to him and shook his hand, "Welcome back Mr. Phantom, welcome back."

Danny met a few other people, including a man that was apparently going to be one of his professors at Hogwarts. Hagrid soon lead him to the back door of the place and spoke as he walked out the door. "See Danny, you're famous."

Danny looked slightly troubled, "But why am I famous, I haven't done one remotely remarkable thing in my life."

Hagrid glanced at him, "I'm not sure I'm the right person to tell you that Danny."

Danny still looked slightly confused but he didn't press it as he watched Hagrid tap the bricks on the wall. The bricks suddenly started moving and Danny just stared at it as the bricks moved apart to reveal a hidden street full of people. Hagrid looked a him, "Welcome Danny, to Diagon Alley."

Danny looked around with an interested look on his face as Hagrid pointed out some shops and told him what they sold. They passed one shop where several children were looking through the window at a broom called the Nimbus 2000. Danny looked at Hagrid, "So where am I supposed to get the money for all of this, I'm more broke then a plate someone dropped from a hundred feet onto concrete."

Hagrid pointed to a building ahead of them, "Well there's where you get the money Danny, Gringotts, the wizard bank, there's no safer place, not one, 'cept maybe Hogwarts."

Danny nodded and chose to stay silent in case he said something stupid, so far Hagrid had put up with him but he didn't want to push his luck. The two walked inside the bank and Danny forced himself to look forward but he focused on the creatures from the corner of his eye. "So what are these guys exactly?"

"Their goblins, Danny, clever as they come but not the most friendly of beasts, best stay close."

Danny mumbled to himself, "People would say the same about me."

They then walked up to the very last desk where a goblin with glasses was writing something and Hagrid cleared his throat so the goblin would look at him. "Mr. Danny Phantom wishes to make a withdrawal."

The goblin looked at him and leaned over the desk, "Ah, and does Mr. Danny Phantom have his key?"

Hagrid spoke, "Oh, wait a minute, got it here somewhere."

The goblin then looked at Hagrid and Danny breathed a sigh of relief as Hagrid dug around his pockets before pulling out a gold key. "Hah, there's the little devil." He put the key on the desk, "Oh, and there's somethin' else as well." He pulled out a letter, "Professor Dumbledore gave me this."

The goblin took the letter from Hagrid and the large man leaned a little closer, "It's about you know what in vault you know which."

Now Danny was curious, he made a mental note of all of this to hopefully find out what was going on later. The goblin nodded, "Very well."

Hagrid nodded back and before Danny knew it they were off, they got in some sort of cart and stopped at some door. The goblin they were with spoke, "Vault six hundred and eighty seven." The goblin got out and looked at Hagrid, "Lamp please."

Hagrid handed him the lamp and the goblin took it before heading to the door in front of him while Hagrid and Danny got out of the cart. The goblin looked at Hagrid once he was close enough, "Key please."

Hagrid handed the goblin the key and the goblin unlocked the door, the heavy metal door then swung open on it's own and Danny looked inside. He looked like he was both in disbelief and done with the world, he had given up trying to understand this madness. He seriously wondered if this was all a dream and he would wake up in his cupboard at any moment.

There were thousands of coins in the vault, some were gold, some were silver, and some were bronze. Hagrid looked at him, "Didn't think your parents would leave you with nothin' now did you?"

Danny didn't even glance at the man, "No, I thought worse."

Hagrid looked both confused and sad but he chose to just put some of the coins in a bag and give it to Danny before they headed to the second vault. Danny stayed completely silent now, he didn't want to make Hagrid mad by asking too many questions. Plus, if Hagrid had spoken so vaguely about it before he probably wouldn't tell Danny anything about it.

The halfa was a bit surprised to see nothing but a small wrapped package in the vault, what was in the package that was so important? Hagrid grabbed the small package and Hagrid looked at him, "Best not to mention this to anyone Danny."

Danny nodded, "No problem, who am I going to tell anyway?"

Hagrid gave him a small, slightly sad smile before they left the bank and went back to getting Danny's school supplies. They walked around for a while getting everything Danny needed and Danny looked at the list, "I still need a wand, the hell am I going to get that from?"

Hagrid looked at him, "A wand, well you want Ollivander's, there ain't no place better. Why don't you go along there and wait, I've just got one last thing I've got to do, won't be long."

Danny quietly sighed before walking into the store, he looked around before walking up to the front desk. "Um, hello, anybody here?"

A man suddenly slid into view on a ladder and Danny looked up at him, the man then smiled and for some reason Danny didn't feel like this man might hurt him. There was genuine happiness in his eyes, Danny's instincts always told him not to trust anyone but he felt like he could trust this man.

The man spoke, "I wondered when I'd be seeing you Mr. Phantom."

Danny stared at the man as he climbed down the latter and looked through the boxes that were piled around everywhere in the store. Danny didn't feel like he had to be on guard, he felt some of the tension that was always there leave his body. He didn't look at this man in suspicion, he wondered if there was something wrong with him but right now he didn't care.

The man spoke again, "Seems only yesterday that your mother and father were in here buying their first wands."

The man, whom Danny guessed was Ollivander at this point, grabbed one of the boxes from the pile and brought it over to the desk. "Here we are." He took the wand out of the box and handed it to Danny who held it like it was made of glass.

Ollivander spoke, "Well give it a wave."

Danny flicked his wrist and several drawers suddenly flew out and their papers scattered everywhere and Danny put the wand down. "Um, sorry?"

Ollivander had him try wand after wand, each time something bad happened and Danny wondered if he should really have a wand. Ollivander then took a box out of the back and stared at it for a second before talking to himself, "I wonder."

Danny felt a little confused and Ollivander brought the wand over before handing it to him. Danny hesitated before taking it and he felt something stir in him, it was like he felt more at peace and more conflicted with himself then he ever had in his life. He found it odd since those two feelings wouldn't usually go together but he accepted the strange feeling.

A cold wind blew through the shop and it stopped after a few seconds and Ollivander spoke to himself. "Curious, very curious."

Danny looked at the man, "What's curious?"

Ollivander gently took the wand from Danny, "I remember every wand I've ever sold Mr. Phantom. It so happens that the phoenix who's tail feather resides in your wand gave another feather, just one other. It is curious that you should be destined for this wand when it's brother gave you that scar."

Ollivander pointed to the scar on Danny's neck and the halfa immediately placed a hand over it. So he had gotten the scar because of a wizard, but what wizard, he needed some answers and he would damn well get them. Danny looked at Ollivander, "Who owns that wand?"

Ollivander gasped a little, "We do not speak his name, the wand chooses the wizard Mr. Phantom, it's not always clear why, but I think it is clear that we can expect great things from you. After all, he-who-must-not-be-named did great things, terrible, yes, but great."

Danny chose to stay silent and Ollivander gave Danny the wand back before Danny heard someone tap on the window. He looked and saw Hagrid at the window, "Danny, happy birthday!"

Danny looked at the cage Hagrid was carrying and there was a snowy owl inside, Danny already loved her. She looked at him and tilted her head from side to side which made Danny smile and Hagrid was beaming when he saw how happy the boy looked. As soon as Danny had his wand he quickly went outside and Hagrid held up the cage for Danny to see the owl.

He looked like he was barely containing his excitement, "She's so pretty."

Hagrid laughed a little and when Danny brought his hand closer to the cage the owl did her best to nuzzle it. Hagrid smiled, "She likes you."

"The feelings mutual." Hagrid handed Danny the cage and the halfa took it, he made sure to hold it as still as possible so the owl wasn't being tossed around inside. The two eventually made their way back to the bar they had gone in before and Danny put the owl on the seat across from him.

They both got food and Danny started thinking about what Ollivander had said and Hagrid looked slightly worried. "You alright Danny, you seem very quiet."

Danny paused for a second before he spoke, "So he killed my parents, the guy that gave me this." He pointed to his scar, "You know, don't you?"

Hagrid looked at the table for a few seconds before pushing his food away, "First, and understand this Danny because it's very important, not all wizards are good. Some of them go bad, a few years ago there was one wizard that went as bad as you can go and his name was V-."

Hagrid sighed and attempted to say his name a few more times, it was like Hagrid was almost afraid to say the name. Danny looked at him, "Can you write it?"

Hagrid shook his head a little, "No I can't spell it, alright, Voldemort." Hagrid said the name in a whisper and Danny nodded, he didn't think it would be a good idea to repeat the name. "It was dark times Danny, dark times, Voldemort started to gather some followers, brought 'em over to the dark side."

"Anyone that stood up to him ended up dead, your parents fought against him, and nobody lived once he decided to kill 'em, nobody, not one, 'cept you."

Danny looked slightly confused, "Me, he tried to kill me?"

Hagrid nodded, "That ain't no ordinary scar on your neck Danny, a mark like that only comes from being touched by a curse, and an evil curse at that."

Danny took a second to process, "So what happened to Voldemort?"

Danny tensed a little when he realized he said Voldemort's name, he thought Hagrid would get angry but the man just answered his question. "Well, some say he died, codswallop in my opinion, nope, I reckon he's out there still, too tired to carry on. But one thing's absolutely certain, somethin' about you stumped him that night, that's why you're famous, that's why everybody knows your name, your the boy who lived."

Danny leaned back in his seat, how could he have survived, he wasn't a halfa yet, or anything else for that matter, he was normal. He shouldn't have survived, he wasn't the boy who lived, he wa the boy that was forced to live, and he hated it. Hagrid soon took him to the train stati0n and Hagrid glared at anyone that gave him strange looks.

Hagrid took out his pocket watch, "Blimey is that the time?" He put the watch away, "Sorry Danny I'm gonna have to leave you, Dumbledore'll be want'n his, uh, well he'll be want'n to to see me. Now, uh, your train'll be leaving in ten minutes," He handed Danny a ticket, "Here's your ticket, stick yo it Danny, that's very important, stick to your ticket."

Danny looked at the ticket and he was slightly confused, when he turned to ask Hagrid where the platform was he was gone. Danny groaned before looking at the ticket again, "Platform nine and three quarters huh, let's see what happens."
