A Hated Life

Don't yell at me, I got bored.

*****

Danny woke up with a start, he looked around and realized that everything was okay, it was fine, he was fine. Though part of him didn't want to be fine, he was never really fine by normal standards, but by his standards he was fine. Just seconds after he woke up he heard Maddie practically pound on his door, "Get up, now!"

She unlocked his door and he mentally sighed before he sat up and he turned on the light, he was still in the cupboard under the stairs, yay. He then heard his cousin Jazz running down the stairs before she stomped on the stairs above him. "Wake up Danny, we're going to the zoo!"

Danny growled at the noise, Jazz then ran the rest of the way downstairs and Danny threw his blankets off of himself before he opened the cupboard door and got out. He moved his white hair out of his eyes and took a breath before heading into the kitchen, he was not looking forward to today.

He felt the urge to rub his scar, which was on the side of his neck, that looked like a skull that turned into flames at the top and what looked like two wings circling it. He actually liked his scar but he often wondered where he got it, it couldn't have been from what his aunt and uncle said it was from. He hear Maddie talking, "There she is, the birthday girl."

Jack spoke, "Happy birthday baby girl."

Danny walked in and Maddie was hugging Jazz, Danny just barely stopped himself from rolling his eyes, he didn't want to get hurt again. Maddie looked at him, "Your cooking breakfast and don't burn anything."

Danny wouldn't look her in the eye, the intense glare sent his way was enough to scare grown men and make them shriek like little girls. Danny just nodded and started cooking, he had gotten good at cooking over the years since Maddie made him do it half the time. Maddie looked excited as she lead Jazz over to the table with the young girls eyes covered, "I want everything to be perfect for Jazz's special day!"

While Danny was cooking Jack yelled at Danny, "Danny, bring me my coffee."

Danny quickly got his uncles coffee while making sure the food didn't get burned, he kept telling himself to not make them angry. Maddie took her hands away from Jazz's eyes and the girl's face fell as she looked at the presents and looked at Jack. "How many are there?"

Jack smiled at her, "Thirty six, counted them myself!"

Jazz then seemed to get angry, "Thirty six, last year I had thirty seven!"

Danny forced himself not to say anything, Jazz was beyond spoiled and this was one of the many ways she was spoiled, she got whatever she wanted. He drowned out the conversation in favor of doing what he was told, before he knew it they were getting ready to leave. Danny wore black pants, white boots that almost reached his knees, a white belt, a black shirt, a black jacket, and white fingerless gloves.

The only reason he even had these clothes is because the wrong clothes had been sent in the mail for Jazz. They couldn't return the clothes and they were his size so they gave the clothes to him, he even had duplicates of all the clothing articles. The four headed to the car, Jazz and Maddie got in but before Danny could Jack stopped him, "I'm warning you, any funny business and I will make you sorry."

Jack then turned away and got into the car, Danny started shaking a little just thinking about what might happen but he forced himself to get into the car. Strange things always seemed to happen when he was around and he knew why, he was part ghost. After an 'accident' when his cousin pushed him into one of his aunt and uncles inventions when he was six or seven he had powers.

He learned how to use them but weird things started happening, things he couldn't write off as his ghost powers, even after he learned how to use them. His aunt and uncle hated it when that stuff happened and they took their anger out on him. He had to control it, he had to, he didn't want to keep getting hurt so he'd shut up and do his best to control it.

He was pulled out of his thoughts when they arrived at the zoo, they walked around for a while and Danny actually enjoyed it. The animals seemed to watch him, there wasn't any sort of ill intent in their eyes, it was a sort of fondness. Animals seemed to love him ever since he became half ghost and Danny loved animals even before that.

The four eventually ended up at the reptile house, Danny liked snakes but he had never seen one in real life for obvious reasons. They eventually ended up standing in front of the tank of a boa constrictor and Jazz continued to stare at it, "Make it move."

Jack tapped the glass before telling it to move, Jazz did the same but in a more forceful way and Danny froze. He knew the snake must not appreciate that and Jazz rolled her eyes, "He's boring."

She then walked away and her parents followed, Danny looked at the snake and whispered, "Sorry, you don't deserve that."

The snake raised it's head up when he spoke and winked at him, Danny smiled a little, "Up for a conversation?"

The snake nodded and Danny's smile widened, "I've never seen a snake before, do you usually talk to people?"

The snake shook it's head and Danny glanced at the sign next to the large tank the snake was in. It said 'bred in captivity' and Danny frowned, "I'm sorry, I know how much it sucks to be stuck somewhere you can't escape from."

All of a sudden Jazz started shouting, "Mom, dad, come here, look at what the snake's doing!"

Jazz pushed him out of the way and Danny shook his head, he felt himself get angry and he forced himself to calm down. He drowned out everything to suppress the emotion, when he looked up the snake he had been talking to was in front of him. "Thanksss."

Danny blinked in surprise before he smiled a little and nodded and the snake slithered away while scaring the people it passed. Danny watched the snake until Maddie's shouting brought his attention back to his cousin who was trapped in the tank the snake had been in. He laughed a little and Jack glared at him, he felt his blood run colder then it already was, he was in huge trouble.

The car ride back to the house was silent, Danny knew it was going to turn into his own personal hell when they got there. Number 4 Privet drive always was, he couldn't escape, he couldn't run or hide from what was there, it was hell. Danny was right, as soon as Jazz was upstairs he was in a lot of pain, he wondered if he would die and not come back this time.

After what felt like forever he was locked in his cupboard, and of course the world decided to add insult to injury. It happened again, he could hear a cracking sound normal people couldn't hear, cuts appeared on his body before disappearing a few minutes later. He teleported to the bathroom just in time for blood to spill out of his mouth and he felt like he was slowly dying.

After over an hour it was finally over, the only good thing about it was that his other injuries had also healed. After taking a few minutes to recover he cleaned up the blood and teleported to the kitchen, as long as no one saw him he could get some food and water without getting caught. He grabbed some food he knew they wouldn't miss and a bottle of water hidden in the back of the fridge.

He took it to his cupboard since he could easily hide whatever was left and once he was done with the items he went to sleep. The next morning he was sitting at the table with the three and he was thinking as he sat at the table. He wasn't allowed to eat, if he was good they might let him eat lunch but for now he could only sit and watch the others eat.

Danny then heard the mail go through the slot in the front door, he got up from his seat and went to get it. He didn't even bother looking at any of it and just gave it to his uncle before sitting down and thinking while lightly tapping his fingers on his leg. He wasn't paying attention to what anyone said until Jazz shouted, "Dad, look, that letter has Danny's name on it!"

Danny's eyes flew open and Jack laughed, "But Jazz, who would be writing to Danny?"

Jazz just shrugged and Danny looked at the letter, it really did have his name on it which he found odd. His aunt and uncle looked at the seal on the letter and glared at him, he felt his blood go cold again and he froze. Over the next few days more of the letters arrived and Jack seemed to be going insane, he even screwed their mail slot shut.

They wouldn't let him leave the house, he couldn't even phase out since his uncle seemed to be sleeping with one eye open lately. On Sunday Danny was told to make cookies and after they were done he gave them to the other three. Jack seemed ecstatic, explaining that there wasn't any mail on Sundays but he was cut off by a letter coming through the fireplace.

Danny just groaned and Jack shouted, "That's it, we're going away, far away, where they can't find us!"

Now that caught Danny's attention, who was Jack referring to when he said they, the people that sent the letters? The whole trip was a blur to Danny, he was going over possibly suspects for who were sending the letters, so far none of them seemed likely. He remembered the date when his aunt mentioned it, his birthday was tomorrow, and when Jazz's watch beeped that turned into today.

Danny quietly sighed, he had never celebrated his birthday, he knew what others did but those ideas might as well have been from another world to him. He was pulled out of his thoughts when something hit the door, the other three jumped but he just looked at the door curiously. He was a curious now eleven year old, not much surprised him anymore, so this didn't scare him.

Something hit the door again, Jack and Maddie ran down the stairs with blasters and Danny rolled his eyes before looking at the door again. Something hit it a third time and the door fell to the floor, a large man was standing there and Jack pointed his blaster at the man, "Who are you?"

The man ignored him and saw the door after he entered, "Oh, sorry about that."

The man then put the door back and Danny stared at him the man looked at him and thought the boy was studying him. Maddie shouted, "Leave, your breaking and entering!"

The man then walked over to the two and broke their blasters which made Danny smirk just a little. The man glared at him, "Dry up Fenton, yeh great prune."

Jack and Maddie ran farther up the stairs to get away from the man and Jazz scrambled into the corner. The man looked around before he spotted Danny again and he looked slightly confused, "Danny?"

Danny nodded, "Unfortunately."

The man looked confused but he didn't say anything about the comment and pulled a box out of his pocket. "I've got somethin' for ya, 'frain I might have sat on it at some point, I imagine it'll still taste the same."

Danny took the box and opened it as he listened to the man, it was a cake, he stared at it in disbelief. Danny looked at the man, "You made this for me?"

The man smiled, "Of course, it's not everyday that your young man turns eleven now is it?"

The man then sat on the couch and pointed an umbrella at the fireplace before it suddenly lit on fire and Danny seemed even more curious now. Danny looked at the man, "Um, who are you?"

The man smiled at him again, "Rubeus Hagrid, keeper of keys and grounds at Hogwarts, course you'll know all about Hogwarts."

Danny tilted his head to the side slightly, "Nope, sorry."

Hagrid looked confused, "No, blimey Danny didn't you ever wonder where they learned it all from?"

Danny looked beyond confused now, "All what?"

Hagrid looked shocked before he quietly sighed and leaned closer to Danny, "Yer a wizard Danny."

Danny took a second to process that, it would explain the things that happened that he couldn't do with his powers. He couldn't believe it though, he was already half ghost, he couldn't be a wizard too. "Yeah, no, sorry but I think you've got the wrong kid."

Hagrid looked confused, like he didn't know what to make of the situation, "Did you ever make somethin' happen that you couldn't explain when you were angry or scared."

"Well yeah but I thought that was because of..." He stopped himself from saying anything else, no one knew about that, he couldn't let them know that.

Hagrid looked confused again, after a few seconds he took out a letter and handed it to Danny and the halfa opened it. He read the first line and raised an eyebrow, "So I'm going to Hogwarts?"

Jack spoke, "No your not, we swore when we took you in that we'd put an end to all that magic nonsense!"

Danny suddenly had a realization, now it made sense, so many pieces were finally falling into place, "So you knew."

Maddie looked mad, "Of course we did, my parents were so happy when they found out your mother was a witch. But I knew what she really was, a freak, then she met that Phantom boy and had you, then she had to go get herself blown up!"

Danny suddenly felt angry and he tried to force the feeling down, "I fucking knew it, I knew they didn't die in a damn car crash. There's no way I could get a scar like the one on my neck from a car crash, so they were blown up."

Hagrid looked shocked, "A car crash kill Lily and James Phantom?"

Maddie crossed her arms, "He kept asking questions, we had to tell him something."

Hagrid looked mad, "It's an outrage, it's a scandal!"

Jack suddenly spoke, "He's not going to that school!"

Hagrid glared at him, "And a great muggle like you is going to stop him are you?"

Danny looked confused, "What's a muggle?"

Hagrid looked at him, "Non magic folk." He then turned to Jack again, "This boy's had his name down ever since he was born! He's going to the finest school of witchcraft and wizardry in the world, and he'll be under the greatest headmaster Hogwarts' has ever seen, Albus Dumbledore."

Danny was slightly confused, he didn't know who Albus Dumbledore was but he didn't really care at the moment. Jack seemed to get even more mad, "I won't pay for some old crackpot to teach him magic tricks!"

Hagrid suddenly pointed his umbrella at Jack, "Never insult Albus Dumbledore in front of me."

Phantom glared at the three, "Leave, now."

Jack glared at him, "You can't tell me what to do!"

Danny growled just low enough so Hagrid couldn't heard but his aunt, uncle, and cousin could. "I won't say it again."

The three suddenly looked scared and they ran out of the room, Danny mentally sighed, that was annoying. Hagrid smiled at him, "I don't know what you did but you sure scared them." He then looked at a pocket watch, "Oh, we're behind schedule, best be off."

Danny watched curiously as Hagrid pulled down the door and it landed on the floor again, Hagrid noticed that he hadn't moved and looked at him. "Unless you'd rather stay of course."

Danny paled just a little bit at the thought and Hagrid left the decrepit shack, Danny followed without looking back.
