Luckily, or rather unluckily, Jan shared this class with us. When she walked in, Ariana could have practically killed her with the glares she was shooting her. "Calm down," I told her again. "Giving her dirty looks won't solve anything."

"Since when were you the rational, peaceful one?" She accused, scowling. Then she sighed, glancing down at her feet. "Look, I'm sorry, Rixton. I'm just upset and taking my anger out on you isn't okay."

"Apology accepted," I told her, smiling slightly. "Don't worry about it, either. It's better than you murdering Jan."

Ariana didn't reply as our teacher, Mrs. Laven, entered with a grin. "Hello, students!" She chirped, clapping her hands. "Are you ready to learn?"

A few people answered with a mumbled chorus of yes. Unsatisfied, Mrs. Laven frowned and pressed, "I said—are you ready to learn?" Her tone raised to the point of which she was practically yelling. Now, I was forced to mutter my agreement.

I didn't fancy history too much, but Ariana was obsessed with it. She admitted that Mrs. Laven could get on her nerves sometimes, but she loved finding more out about the past so the good canceled out the bad. However, when Jan started picking on her, it almost ruined everything for Ariana, until Mrs. Laven forcefully moved the other girl to the opposite side of the room.

That quite pleased Ariana and me.

Mrs. Laven jerked me out of my thoughts as she said, "Today, we'll be reviewing the American Revolution. Basic stuff, but I figured your minds could use a little bit of refreshing on this topic. We'll also discuss the aftermath."

Ariana was practically bursting with excitement, her troubles momentarily forgotten. She was whispering something under her breath—no, she was rapping something?

"What are you doing?" I asked in a whisper. She didn't even look at me.

Frowning, I turned away and forced myself to listen to what was being said. If Ariana was interested in it, then I could use it as a conversation-starter.

After an hour of learning about taxed tea, the bell rang. Ariana jumped and groaned. "Darn," she mumbled, clearly upset that the class was over.

"Oh, come on," I said, narrowing my eyes. "You can't love history this much—"

"I do," she replied, and added, "I'm leaving ASAP so I don't have to deal with Jan. Bye!" She waved and scurried off, leaving me by myself. Then again, it was the perfect opportunity to talk to her.

Grabbing my things, I approached Jan, who was laughing with a short brunette whom I thought was named Delia. "Excuse me," I greeted coldly, mustering up my inner courage. I had trouble approaching people, but I forced myself to present an emotionless state as I stared at Jan.

"Oh, you," Jan snickered. "Yeah, okay." She faced Delia. "See you later." She nodded, dismissing her. Delia looked troubled by the gesture but scrambled away nevertheless.

With her absence, I rounded on Jan. "Let's take this outside, shall we?"

She rolled her eyes and shoved past me, walking out the door. I followed, wondering what exactly I was going to say. Idiot, I scolded myself, then shook my head as if swatting away a troublesome fly.

Once out-of-earshot from Mrs. Laven, Jan glowered at me. "What do you want, emo?" She inquired, and I found myself gritting my teeth at the nickname.

"What do I want? For you to stop messing with Ariana," I growled, crossing my arms over my chest. Sooner or later teachers would get suspicious and send us off on our separate ways, but I had to make sure I got my point across.

Jan chuckled. "Oh, that pipsqueak? Yeah, fat chance. She's an easy target."

Easy target. The words rang through my ears and I was filled with such hatred, it took all my self-restraint not to scream at her. "Listen, b—Jan," I corrected myself, almost calling her bitch. She was one, but I told myself I wouldn't resort to cursing at her. Yet.

Instead I continued, "Listen, Jan. I'm not going to stand by and watch you bully my friend. So, I'm just saying now: continue, and you mess with me, too. And let me tell you. . ." I smirked. "Well, you'll find out what'll happen soon enough if you keep up with this bullshit."

Before she could respond, I spun around and stormed off, heading for my next period. Well, I had broken that standard—I had sworn. Not like I care, I reminded myself.

And then I found that I didn't care. I just hoped Jan ceased with her teasing and such, because I didn't really want to resort to my earlier title as a violent freak. Not that I'd ever hit her, but speculations would fly around. With Jan's big mouth, it was only a matter of time, in fact. I could imagine what she'd say now; "He threatened me—" And maybe I had. But I don't think I'd act on it. If anything, I'd resort to telling an adult, as much as I would hate it.

Sighing, I decided it was worth it if it meant protecting Ariana.
