Chapter 9

Macy's P.O.V.

It was as if he changed completely. The mess I saw him as the night before had vanished. That sensitive, vulnerable side of him was locked away behind his anger. It shouldn't have hurt, but it did.

After last night, I really thought I could call him a friend. I told myself that I'd be there for him because he needed someone to support him. Being alone for all those years must have been truly devastating. Though, he's made that a lot harder.

After we got out of the woods, we were stopped by Jayden. Jonathan seemed to despise him, but I had believed that they were old friends.

Knowing that my grandparents would be coming home soon, I told Jayden I'd talk to him later today and went inside to take a shower. The smell of pine covered my body and as much as I loved it, it was evidence that I hadn't stayed inside the house.

After my very warm shower, I went to go eat something. I was searching through the fridge until the door opened and my grandparents walked in.

"How was it?" I asked, smiling.

"It was wonderful. It's great to feel young again. How was your night, Macy?" My grandma smiled.

"Boring," I lied. "What's that?"

My grandpa was holding a plastic bag in his hand waving it around.

He laughed. "This is for you. We know you don't have a lot of clothes and our friends have a granddaughter around your age who was happy to give these to you. Now, go look through them and find something nice to wear. We're going out for breakfast."

Hearing that made me jump with joy. I was absolutely starving. I took the plastic bag and hugged both of my grandparents before going upstairs to change.

The clothes were really nice. I didn't see how someone could give these away. I finally settled on dark skinny jeans, black combat boots, a white sweater, and a green parka. My hair was already dried so I brushed it and left it down, which completed the outfit.

Before we left, I knocked on Jonathan's window, hoping that he'd open it. I didn't want to leave on a sour note. No matter how much he seemed to infuriate me at times, I knew he wasn't a bad guy.

Nobody answered though, so I settled on grabbing a paper and some tape.

I'm sorry about arguing with you this morning. Have a good day
-Macy
P.S.You should smile more:)

I taped the note to his window and ran down the stairs to meet my grandparents.

"That outfit looks cute," my grandma cooed. "Now, come on. IHOP can get crowded in the mornings."

The three of us got in the car and my grandpa was about to back up until he saw Jayden across the street. He stuck his arm out the window and waved him over, so Jayden shyly walked over to the car.

"Hi, Mr. and Mrs. Kerjoff. Hey, Macy. How are you guys?" He asked respectively, a tiny bit uncomfortable as I watched his eyes flicker back and forth.

"We're doing great. Would your mom be okay if you went out to breakfast with us? Macy here needs some friends," my grandma told him.

I felt my cheeks heat up and I stared at my grandma wide eyed.

Jayden's boyish laugh filled my ears. "I'll go ask right now. I'll be right back."

He ran to his house, while I sat in the back seat in absolute terror.

"Grandma, why?" I asked dramatically, sliding my face down the window in pure embarrassment.

"It's true, isn't it? We don't expect you to sit around all day in the house. It's healthy to make friends and go out and Jayden is a nice boy," my grandma answered, raising her eyebrows, which I could see through the rear view mirror. "Plus, he seems like your type."

"Grandma!"

Jayden came running back with a bag and an extra sweater. "She said yes."

"Well, get in the back."

He did and I felt very awkward as he sat next to me because of my grandma's previous comment. He smiled at me and I smiled back, avoiding looking him in the eyes. Instead, I looked out the window to see Jonathan staring at the car with my note in his hands.

Once we made eye contact, he rolled his eyes and crumbled the paper, throwing it behind him. As my grandparents talked and Jayden was looking away, I flipped Jonathan off through the window and stuck my tongue out at him.

I really wanted to help him, but he could be such a pain in the ass.

"How's everyone been since we last stayed for dinner?" My grandpa asked, taking a bite of his omelette.

"We've been good. Nothing new in the entire neighborhood actually," Jayden responded. "Hows your café doing, Ms.Kerjoff?"

"We're a bit low on staff, which reminds me. Macy, dear, would you want to work there? It's about $13 an hour and you can choose your own hours," my grandma smiled.

The Internet café wasn't so bad. It was actually quite welcoming.

I nodded. "Sounds good to me."

"Good. You'll also see Jayden a lot more as well since he's always hanging around that place."

I faked a smile and nodded again, taking a bite of my buttered pancakes. Jayden looked about as embarrassed as I was.

Throughout the rest of our breakfast, I couldn't help but keep thinking about Jonathan. He angered me to no extent, but it was always so satisfying when I made him angry as well.

Though, I was pretty ecstatic when he smiled at me. He probably wouldn't do that again, not from what I can tell. Ever since I woke up, he'd been acting like a jerk again. It would've been nice to finally talk to him like friends.

"C'mon, Macy. Your grandpa is going to drive Jayden back home right now. We're walking to the café," my grandma told me. I hadn't even realized that the meal was already paid for or that the guys were gone.

I followed after my grandma as we walked down the streets.

"The job seems pretty simple, right?" She asked.

"As far as I can tell, it'll probably take me a bit of time to remember all of the recipes for the drinks, but other than that, being a waitress is pretty explanatory."

"Would you want to try it right now? Just before you actually start. You won't be making drinks, but start serving drinks and taking orders. It isn't that busy at this time of date either, so I'm sure you'll be just fine."

The idea didn't seem so bad, so I agreed. I had also really liked the outfits; a simple burgundy baby doll dress.

The walk to the café didn't take long and I found myself getting more and more excited.

Once we got there, the employees greeted my grandma and sent me a friendly smile. There were only around five customers at the moment.

"There's an extra uniform in the back. You can get changed in the bathroom and go out your hair up into a bun. There's an extra notepad and pen on the counter next to the register. Good luck."

That seemed like a very vague explanation, but I went to get changed and put my hair up. The outfit was very fitting and a smile lit up my face. Like my grandma had said, there was an extra notepad and pen next to the register so I grabbed it and went to the only table that hadn't ordered anything.

"Good morning. I'm Macy. I'll be your waitress for today. What would you like to order?" I recited, basically copying what our IHOP waiter had said to us earlier.

"I'll have a- Wait. Macy?"

I looked up from my notepad to see Jonathan in a blue hoodie.

"Jonathan?"

He looked annoyed. "Are you stalking me now? What's with the get up?"

"Like I said, I'm going to be your waitress. My grandma offered me the job and this is my trial run so if you can just order a damn drink so I can leave. Why are you even here?"

"My wifi's down at home. Just get me a taro latte," he said. I wrote it down and walked back to the kitchen and hung it up so someone could make it.

There really wasn't much else to do since no other customers came in and my grandma was no where to be seen so I walked back to Jonathan's table.

"What did you need wifi for?"

Jonathan sighed, not taking his eyes off his laptop screen. "Editing."

"That seems pretty cool. I'm actually into video editing and animation and all that stuff too," I said happily, finally finding something we had in common.

Jonathan's eyes lit up and he stared at me for a second. "Animation, huh? What if I gave you a job? Just a quick one or two minute animation? What's your email? I'll send you the video."

"Wait, what video?" I asked. He was pretty serious about this and if I didn't know better, he seemed a bit excited.

"A video, okay? Just watch it. Tell me what you think. Think of any ideas that pop into your head when you hear the audio and just animate it. I'll pay you for it. How does $50 sound?" he said quickly.

"I'm not interested in money. I'm not very familiar with the town, so why don't you show me around tomorrow night?" I asked, really hoping he'd say yes. Maybe then we'd be able to hang out without him acting like a grump.

Jonathan shook his head. "No, absolutely not." He stopped for a second and sighed. "You know what? Only because I need this animation, but you owe me two animations now. I'll send you the other video."

I couldn't help but smile again and walked back to the kitchen to get his drink once I heard the bell.

He was back to wordlessly staring at his laptop screen again, so I set down the latte. He looked up at me for a second, then back to the screen.

"Be ready by seven. I'll show you around a bit, but we're not staying out longer than midnight. You got it?"

"Mhmm," I answered, siting down quickly to hug him and skipping back to the kitchen.

Somehow, Jonathan made me want to pull my hair out and other times, he made me want to dance with delight. I didn't know which one was worse.
