Chapter 1: A Fateful Encounter
(Your POV)
In the middle of a city in Japan was an office worker making his way to work. His attire consisted of dress pants, a dress shirt, a black trench coat, a (f/c) tie, glasses, and eyebags. My name is (Y/N) (L/N). While I may appear to be a regular office worker, I also have a side job as a bookkeeper, along with a job of challenging Destiny with a group of people I accidentally got involved with a log time ago the last time I went drinking. I am by no means all powerful or a god, instead, I do what I can. To be honest, I'm more like a warlock. By warlock, I mean I borrow power from a being, a library known as 'Alexandria Eternal'. Though my powers are nothing to brag about, I did save many people using my power. I walked through the city towards the office building I worked at whilst looking at my watch, I was running early, just the way I like it. To be honest, my work is rather dull, but it pays the bills. I can't just use my power to change my economic conditions, nor would having magic improve my life by much, it's just one of those "Hey that's pretty neat" things to have. I arrived at the main building moments later and entered the office building. I heard the sound of dress shoes hitting the marble floor around me, including from under me. I went into a nearby elevator and was later joined by a coworker of mine, Kobayashi, who appears to be a good person if you can look past her alcohol addiction.
"Good morning Kobayashi." I greeted as I fixed my glasses and adjusted my collar to look more professional, not for her, but because being professional is something of a requirement here.
"Morning (Y/N)." Kobayashi appeared to be tired, then again, I heard she moved apartments to a more expensive one, I'm curious as to why. "Hey, you and I are friends right?"
"I see us more as acquaintances, but I suppose friends aren't too off the mark." I answered, and before you ask, yes, I am always this cold to everyone. "Why do you ask?"
"Well I was thinking about hosting a party at my place since I just moved in, since I have no better ideas, and it's close to the weekend today." Kobayashi informed me, and it will certainly be a new experience for me. "I'm hosting a Christmas party, so you're invited."
"I have no other plans tonight, so I suppose I can come to this party of yours." Despite my cold demeanor, I was brutally honest, so when I say something, I meant it.
"Great, just a quick warning, I have two new roommates, both of whom are rather...interesting." Kobayashi warned me as the elevator reached our floor, and the two of us made our way to our respective desks.
My seat was far away from everyone, in the corner of the office floor where the AC was, a great spot for summer, but a horrible spot in winter. No one really sat next to me, only adding to the coldness of the spot, not like I cared. No one really hated me here, nor do I hate anyone here, I just radiate an aura demanding solitude for some reason. Kobayashi even compared me to a goddess in manga, Komi-San. I think her name was. Constantly radiating an aura of superiority, when in reality, I'm just your average guy. Plus my lack of friendships may only work to solidify the similarities.
Only difference is I'm not cute.
Not that I cared, I was lonely at work, I was here to work and nothing more. Due to my workaholic personality, people tend not to interact with me, or maybe it's more I'm just too cold to people. Either way, the solitude in this workplace never really bothered me, in fact, I'm fairly certain Kobayashi is only polite to me out of pity. Does my social life even exist? Most certainly not, not that it matters, I'm a busy man anyways. I was typing away on the computer for hours on end, but out of nowhere, I looked out the window next to me. I saw a high school gyaru girl go into an alley, followed shortly after by a boy who was around the same age.
I suppose I should show you what I do.
I took out a book of mine from my pocket, the book was a sleek black color and only had the words 'Alexandria Eternal' written in old English font on the front. This book's name was actually Minerva, but it's property of Alexandria Eternal, so that's why the name was there. My first job when it comes to scenarios is to read what the situation is so I don't intervene on a misunderstanding.
To oversimplify what I read; the gyaru, named Konan, cheated on the boy that followed her, named Aki. Due to the nature of the gyaru often being a revealing one, the boy held himself back during their relationship. The gyaru teased him and made fun of his insecurities during the whole relationship, and Aki thought he would finally get laid in the end. However, Konan cheated on him so they broke up, but now Aki's hormones are controlling his actions.
I cannot predict the future, nor can Minerva, but I can tell Aki is going to do something drastic, most certainly a crime and given the knife in his pocket, I'm guessing murder. I began looking through Aki's notes and found a category known as 'Soulmates', or people that would make an ideal couple for him. I decided to go with Yona, a girl who happens to be nearby. I took out a pen and turned back to the latest page, which seemed to be writing itself as time went on. I stopped the book from writing itself so I could write in it instead.
I changed Aki's change from doing something drastic into meeting Yona by chance. The way they met was simple, Yona dropped some groceries in front of the alleyway, catching Aki's attention. Aki is absolutely smitten with the girl, and decides to help her, allowing the gyaru girl to get away. Since this was also her fault as well, I decided to put in a penalty for her. I changed the page to the gyaru's page and made her boyfriend break up with her, breaking her heart enough for her to become desperate enough to find something productive to do. As for what she'll do, that's up to her, but it better be something school related.
Catch all of that?
While Minerva may look like it only has an average amount of pages, Minerva allows me to access chapters of one's life just by opening and closing it. However, it's useless in a fight because I have to write what I want to change, any unrealistic changes will be disqualified, and I can only affect a couple seconds into the future. For example, if I wrote about something that happened in their past, the change won't happen. If I wrote them suddenly teleporting into the ocean to drown, that wouldn't happen. So yeah, that's literally all I can do for now. Just what I showed you. Kobayashi can probably kick my ass if she wanted. Minerva only allows me to make small changes in one's life at the same moment they're happening, but those small changes can go a long way.
So it's not me who can do great things, it's my book, without it, I'm just an average warlock. I closed my book and put Minerva back in my pocket before continuing my work. People always wondered what I was writing, but some were too nervous to approach me. I didn't know until Kobayashi told me this recently, but apparently I radiated an intimidating aura whenever I worked. Plus there's also the fact I don't eat much at work, and I looked like a skeleton.
I wonder why Kobayashi invited me.
(Timeskip, brought to you by chibi (Y/N) walking by in a superior manner, but tripping over, quickly getting up as if nothing happened.)
It was now dark out, and I stood in front of Kobayashi's apartment. I was wearing a black turtleneck sweater underneath a dark green trench coat with dark blue pants and dress shoes. There was a cup of coffee in my hand, since I can not live without the drink I knocked on the door to the apartment, and this maid girl opened it up, but the weirdest part about her was her horns.
"Oh you must be (Y/N)?" The maid asked, and I nodded to confirm this information. "Kobayashi told me you'd be coming here, my name is Tohru, Kobayashi's maid."
"I'm quite surprised Kobayashi could afford a maid in the first place." Kobayashi and I received the same salary, and I most certainly can't afford a maid, I wonder why Kobayashi can.
"Please, come in." Tohru welcomed me in and offered to take my coat, but I declined because it was rather chilly tonight. "Kobayashi and Takiya are in the living room, but if you take Kobayashi away from me I will end you."
"I take it you like her in a romantic sense?" I asked, and Tohru nodded in a slight embarrassed manner. "I wish you the best of luck, though those words hold less weight when told to you by a stranger."
"I'm glad to hear at least someone wants the best for me." Tohru pouted, and it kind of reminded me of a small child not getting what they want. "Kobayashi doesn't want to eat my tail, so we're having some problems."
"Pardon?" I was curious as to what Tohru meant by 'tail', but the door was suddenly knocked on by someone on the other side of the door.
I decided to join my two coworkers in the living room, where they were getting drinks out. In the middle of the room was a small girl with white hair and an odd attire. I was greeted by Kobayashi and Takiya as I took a seat on the end of the couch, not wanting to take up much space. The small girl stared at me intently, like a dog trying to understand a guess their family brought home. I was never really the best with children, so I awkwardly waved to the girl, who waved back. Then a butler-looking fellow walked into the room and he across from me. Due to the great power of us introverts, we both understood that we'd both rather be anywhere but here, and Kobayashi sweat dropped at what the man said next.
"This human world is so annoying, I must destroy it." The Butler-looking fellow stated, and I reached into my pocket and was 100% ready to engage in fisticuffs with this man, which I'll probably lose.
"Don't." I politely requested and the two of us just locked eyes for a solid minute before he agreed not to. "Thank you."
"Tohru, are all your friends this weird?" Kobayashi asked the maid, who rubbed the back of her neck sheepishly.
"Not all of them are like Fafnir, he's just shy, and I invited one more person to show you what I mean." Tohru explained, and I looked at the newly dubbed Fafnir, I'll use Minerva to learn more about him later. "I wonder what's taking her so long."
"Sorry I'm late!" A woman with the most interesting hair I've ever seen, closed eyes, and an impossibly shaped body suddenly burst into the room, though her chest was large, her hair was the first thing I noticed. "I had trouble finding my way here."
"Kobayashi, meet Quetzalcoatl!" Tohru introduced the 'feathered serpent', and this woman didn't look like a serpent, but maybe she has snake eyes and that's why they're closed.
"What cup size are you...?" Kobayashi stared at the massive chest in disbelief, and I would have done the same, but then I would be seen as a creep, seriously, her chest must have it's own gravitational pull.
"G for goddess, well ex-goddess to be exact." Quetzalcoatl explained cheerfully, ex-goddess? Is that like a fallen angel but for goddesses or did she just retire? "By the way, feel free to call me Lucoa, since my real name is pretty long."
"We'll go ahead and have a seat." Kobayashi gestured to the couch all of us were sitting on, and out of all the available seats, Lucoa chose to sit next to me. "As for you, Akiya, a Butler has to be middle aged at least to be considered a viable butler."
With that...statement out of the way, Kobayashi and Akiya began arguing to one another about butlers for some reason, while Fafnir and the small girl played video games. I was never the best when it comes to video games, and even a small child could beat me in them, leaving me to talk to the girl beside me. I didn't know what she liked, and her attire was pretty simple, just a cap, tank top, shorts, and shoes. I hated having to make conversation, especially with people I just met. Even though I knew her name, chances are she wouldn't know my name, so I decided to introduce myself.
"Hello, my name is (Y/N) (L/N)." I decided to introduce myself in a formal manner to the woman. "I heard your name when you introduced yourself to Kobayashi, honor to meet you, Lucoa."
"Heyo (Y/N), nice to meet you too." Lucoa was far too casual for someone who claimed to be a goddess, and despite the fact her eyes were closed, she was quite perceptive. "I know what you're thinking, and yes, I am the feathered serpent Quetzalcoatl."
"I can see you're just as perceptive as one would expect a goddess to be." I commented as the two of us were sucked into a scene of awkward silence, why didn't I socialize more in high school?! "So what is your favorite color?"
"Pffft, what kind of question was that?" Lucoa started laughing, and I adjusted my glasses whilst looking away out of shame, why couldn't I be more social? "Sorry for laughing, I just never heard of someone starting a conversation like that."
"Well how would you start a conversation, since you have the gall to act like you can do better?" I crossed my arms and raised an eyebrow, confident that this woman can't come up with something better.
"I'd try to get to know them better, like 'hey, what brings you here?'" Lucoa actually gave a good line. "If I liked them, then I would say something like 'wanna hang?' You understand? Or maybe I would just flirt."
"Can we avoid the topic of relationships?" I requested, and my voice sounded slightly nervous, I've never been in a relationship before, so I get nervous when it's brought up. "It's an uncomfortable subject for me, and I don't wish to put a damper on the mood, so I must request that we avoid the subject."
"Oh sure thing." Lucoa had to take a minute to think of another subject. "Say, I plan on staying on Earth since I've been kicked out of my place, is it alright if I stay at your place?"
"What about your friend, Fafnir over there?" I gestured towards the dark haired individual in question, who just glared at me in response. "Doesn't he need a place to stay?"
"Actually, he'll be staying at my place." Takiya explained in his drunken tone, and he wore spiral glasses, just where did he get them? "Butlers are awesome, no matter what age they are!"
"Congratulations, you awakened a new fetish." Now I had no excuse to deny Lucoa, other than the fact I don't want anyone in my house. "Very well then Lucoa, you're free to live with me until you find a place of your own."
"Yay!"
The party went on as usual, and the small girl challenged me to a game. Since I didn't wish to be seen as incompetent to anyone here, I accepted the challenge, but lost a couple seconds in. I was obviously distraught because I lost to a child, but Lucoa patted my back and said it was alright. With that, the two of us decided to go home so I could get some rest. While Kobayashi didn't have work tomorrow, I did, so I needed to sleep. As we left, I noticed Lucoa began shivering, and what kind of person would I be if I let someone freeze? Besides, I was wearing a long sleeved turtleneck, so I'd be better off without my trench coat compared to Lucoa, who only had on a tank top and shorts. I wrapped my trench coat around her and buttoned it up before leading Lucoa to my place, but that didn't stop her from talking.
"Huh, why did you give me your trench coat?" Lucoa asked, and I stared back at her because the answer was obvious.
"I don't want for my roommate to get a cold, that's all." I informed the woman as we walked along the sidewalk.
"You're very odd, I thought you were a cold guy but you're super sweet." Lucoa commented, and for once, I felt my face get warm. "Thank you."
"I-Ι don't wish for you to get a cold is all!" I fixed my glasses upwards, and I think I'm becoming this thing called a tsundere. "If you get a cold, I would be stuck taking care of you."
"I still appreciate the thought though." Lucoa smiled, and despite the cold, I felt warm all the way home.
(A/N: My goal for this fanfic is to be wholesome, ironic considering this is a Lucoa x Reader fanfic, but hey, god is dead and I'm the next best thing. Also, some of you are probably thinking 'Winter, you sociopath, why are you releasing so many fanfics?!' Well to answer that, I've actually had these ideas since the beginning of my King of Games book. Since no one really reads it anymore, I'll write it's various epilogues later. Also, just in case you're worried this MC will be OP, don't be. Out of all the characters who use magic, he's the weakest, yes, that includes Shota.
