Chapter One: James Joins the Gang

The students at Olympic National Academy were beginning to feel very disappointed with the curriculum put in front of them. Students Bella, Alice, Angela, Jessica, and Katie were quite perplexed indeed. Usually teachers took great care when planning lessons, but so far, as third year students, they had not been the least impressed. Since Olympic National was an all-girls school, there wasn't much to interest them, because—like normal rebellious teenage girls—they were not too fond of studying.

With Tillicum Park Prep—the local all-boys school—just across the Calawah River, Bella, Angela, Jessica, Alice and Katie would constantly think about ways to get there. It wasn't that hard, considering that the boys had canoeing in the river itself and the girls had horseback riding through the nearby forest. The problem was, the only time free periods occurred were, of course, during lunch, at around three when classes ended, dinner time—which happened after study hours and when classes were finished—and the hours of nine and ten. The problems involving this were that the only time that would be good to get to the boys school would be in the afternoon, but security guards were strict during those hours.

"It's just not fair," grumbled Angela one afternoon; this wasn't typical of her, as she had been taught early on about fairness and the like, given that her father was the local minister.

"What is it this time?" asked Jessica, not looking up from where she was painting her nails a rather sparkly pink.

Angela paced around their moderately-sized dorm, her hands perched on her curved hips, and worried her lower lip. "We've got to get out of here..."

Bella, Alice, and Katie burst in from English class.

"We came as soon as we could," Bella said, her cheeks flushed and her long, brown hair swinging back and forth down her back; and she sounded quite out of breath indeed, and her face was flushed, quite a good look for her.

"The halls, you know," Alice said, throwing off her scarf and flopping down upon her bed, tucking her hands behind her head, which was done up in a stylish pixie cut.

"Totally and completely mobbed!" cried Katie—the youngest of the group—as she removed her hat, revealing beautiful red hair. The girls had all thought it unusual that Katie had joined the group—as she was just sixteen to their seventeen—but she'd very soon become one of them.

"What were you saying?" asked Jessica, finally looking up.

"Well," Angela unabashedly continued, regarding Bella, Alice, and Katie for a moment, "I was saying we've got to find a way to get out of here. I mean...it's not like we can go on like this, day after day!"

"On like what?" asked Bella, who by this time had removed both her shoes and her socks and was sitting cross-legged on the bed. She stuck her tongue out at her notebook—becoming fatter and fatter with essays and whatnot—and took out her dog-eared copy of Wuthering Heights from underneath her mattress. "You can't end a statement like that, Angela," she said quietly as she opened her book.

"Bella's right," Alice replied, climbing onto her bed, next to Bella's. "It is very outlandish subject, you know. You could get caught."

"Oh, I don't care anymore," Angela said.

"You don't care?" inquired Katie. "How could you not care? What if your father got wind of what you were saying?"

Jessica shot Katie a look. "Come on," she said. "She just doesn't care, okay, Red? It's perfectly possible not to care."

"Stop," Bella said, never looking away from her book. "Either take back what you said to Katie, or apologize, Jessica."

Jessica made a face. "You're not the boss of me!"

"Do it," Bella said, still looking at her book.

"But all I said was—"

"Jessica," said Bella, her voice growing severe.

"I was just talking about her hair!" Jessica said quickly.

Bella finally lowered her book. "Jessica," she said slowly, "apologize to Katie at once or you're out of the book."

Jessica blanched white. She turned to Katie, and said halfheartedly, "I take back what I said about your hair."

Katie nodded. "Thank you," she said quietly.

Bella smiled at her handiwork and picked up her book once more. "As you were saying, Angela," she said.

"Right," Angela said, running her hands through her raven-black hair. "We need to...I don't know...leave!" She crossed the room to her bed by Jessica's and fell onto her back onto it; it was very dramatically done. "At least for a while," she said, a little less heatedly. "I mean...I don't know...the teachers have stopped giving a damn or something..."

Alice snickered at her use of profanity. "Here, here," she said quietly.

Jessica gave Angela a sympathetic smile as she sat up. "Get a grip," she said, playfully shaking her head at her.

"All I know is, our problem's solution isn't going to walk through that door," she said, putting her head into her hands.

"Be less emotional, Angela," Bella said.

"Right," Angela said, pulling her head away from her hands.

Katie slid to her stomach on her bed. "Can you elaborate?" she asked.

"What?" Angela asked.

Katie cocked her head to one side. "I mean...how do you think we should get out of here?"

"The horses; it's so obvious," said Bella from behind her book.

Angela threw a pillow at her.

"What the hell?!" cried Bella, finally putting her book down.

"What's your deal, anyway?" demanded Alice, sitting up.

"It's cool, I've got this," said Bella. "What's your deal anyway?"

Angela rolled her eyes. "You stole my train of thought..."

"How the hell should I know what your train of thought is, anyway?" Bella cried, throwing up her hands in confusion.

"Your...nose is always in a book," said Angela, shaking a finger at her.

Bella made a face. "So?! I like books."

"Well, I like my train of thought to go uninterrupted," said Angela.

She sighed back at her. "Fine," said Bella. "I apologize."

"Good," said Angela. "Now, as I was saying, the horses..."

"Are our method of getting out of here?" asked Katie.

"Yes," replied Angela. "Thank you for that..."

Jessica stood up and crossed over to the window. She stood on her toes and tried her best to peer into the windows of Tillicum Park Prep, her bushy black hair blocking a fair bit of the overcast day. "God...I just want to see a boy shirtless... Is that really too much to ask?!"

"Apparently, considering you're praying to a falsehood," said Bella, who had again returned to her book.

"Can't you be an atheist somewhere else?!" demanded Angela, while Jessica scoffed from her place at the window.

"No," Bella replied.

Angela rolled her eyes. "I can't believe this," she muttered.

Jessica let out a groan and pushed the window open. She leaned out into the cool air and sighed wistfully. "I want to see a shirtless guy. Or maybe a guy without pants! That way I could see his—"

"Shut up," said Bella. She gave Jessica a curved smile as she looked away from her book. "At least about privates, I mean."

Alice looked over at Bella. "What are you reading, anyway?"

"An anthology of man," she replied.

Alice blinked. "Really?" she asked.

Bella smirked at her. "No, not really!" she said, her smirk quickly widening into a wonderful grin. "It's Wuthering Heights again, you know..."

Katie wrinkled her lips. "How can we get to the horses?"

"Seduce the guard and get the key to the stables," Bella said quietly.

"But the guard is a girl," said Angela quietly.

Bella put down her book. "Are you saying that pretending to be a lesbian to escape this hell hole is wrong?" she asked.

"One of us wouldn't be pretending," Jessica said quietly.

"We know about your package deal with Angela, okay Jessica?!" said Bella, rolling her eyes dramatically.

"I wasn't talking about me or Angela," Jessica said quietly. "And don't get all huffy or anything, because I wasn't talking about you, either, Isabella Swan," said Jessica, her eyes narrowing slightly at Bella.

They all turned to Katie, who let out a sigh. "What do you want me to do?" she asked. "What illegal act shall I commit now?"

Bella sighed. "Don't think of it like that."

"Yeah," Angela went on. "This is, after all, for all of us."

Katie put her head into her hands. She rubbed her temples and breathed in and out for three heartbeats. "What do I have to do?"

"I don't know...what do you guys normally do?" asked Jessica.

Bella shot her a look. "Come on! Almost seventeen and you've never used the internet?" she asked.

Jessica rolled her eyes. "Please. All the good websites are blocked here anyway."

Bella pushed herself off her bed and crossed to where Katie was lying on her bed. "Come on, Jessica," she said, shooting her friend a smile. "I'm sure Katie can decide for herself what's to be done."

"Kiss her, and while I'm doing it, get the key," said Katie quietly, while Bella gave her a secret smile. "I've seen spy movies."

"Good girl," Bella said, patting her head and returning to her bed. "Now, then, you'll have to wear all black..."

"And makeup!" cried Alice, a grin coming to her face. You know I get to do anything to do with makeup," she said firmly.

"I know the guard," said Angela quietly. "She's like...twenty-something, and totally hot. I think her name is Tanya or something..."

"I know," said Katie. "I know her, too."

Bella's phone buzzed and she removed it from her mattress. She switched it on and entered the passcode and saw that she had a text.

"Who texted you?" asked Alice.

"Oh, this girl named Maggie from my biotech class," she replied. Bella's eyes went wide as she read the words. "Oh, my god..."

"Did you miss a quiz or something?" asked Angela.

"Forget to hand in homework?" inquired Jessica.

Bella shook her head at both of them. "No, it's...her cousin got kicked out of Tillicum Park Prep," she whispered.

"Does she say how?" asked Alice.

Bella nodded.

"What'd she say?" asked Katie.

"Lewd conduct," Bella whispered to them. "He was found in the locker room with...the quarterback?!" she cried.

"Oh, god," said Alice.

"Didn't you two make out at that one party?" asked Jessica.

"Yes, Jessica, thank you for that," replied Bella through gritted teeth as she remembered how Mike Newton ran his hands all over her unbecomingly. "It seems that the quarterback convinced the school that this guy—James somebody—seduced him and now..."

"What?" asked Alice.

"James has a twin sister, Victoria, and she's starting here..."

"Why do we care?" asked Katie.

Bella slowly looked up. "Well...whoever has room in their dorm..."

"What are you saying?" asked Angela.

"We have room," replied Bella. "Apparently this Victoria person'll be here any minute..."

There was a knock at the door. It quickly opened and Ms. Cope, their kindly dorm advisor, stood there with a girl behind her. She smiled at the girls and walked into the room, Victoria behind her. "Hello, girls," she said.

"Hey, Ms. Cope," they all replied.

"Everyone, this is Victoria," said Ms. Cope. "Victoria, these will be your new friends, or partners in crime," said Ms. Cope jokingly. "Are you all ready to get settled in, Victoria? Do you need anything?"

"No, thank you, ma'am," said Victoria. "I think I'm fine."

"Very good," said Ms. Cope. "Have a good afternoon, everyone," she said in her typical, friendly manner, and left the room.

Victoria walked over to her new bed and put down her duffel bag and suitcase. She then turned to the girls and asked, "Which one of you has biotech with my cousin, Maggie? She said your name was Bella..."

"Me," said Bella, raising her hand.

"Good," she said. "She also told me that..." Victoria looked around the room and sighed. "I'm sorry, I forgot your names."

After everyone had been introduced, Victoria continued.

"I'm not who you think I am," she said.

"Really?" asked Jessica.

She nodded. "No, I'm not." Victoria then took off her hair! It was a curly red wig, and it revealed short, blond hair. Then, reaching into her shirt, she pulled out various tissues. "I'm a dude," said the person in a deeper voice.

Bella gasped. "You're James," she whispered.

James nodded back at her. "Yeah, I am," he said.

"So...did you really seduce the quarterback?" asked Alice.

"You know, him and Bella had a one-night-stand," said Jessica with a smirk.

"Jessica!" cried Alice, gasping loudly.

"What?!" demanded Jessica, throwing up her hands. "I'm not the one who had a pregnancy scare in second year!"

Alice crossed the room and promptly slapped Jessica across the face. "Just leave Bella alone, okay?!"

Jessica quickly slapped Alice back without hesitation, her brown eyes flashing. "Don't touch me, man!" she cried.

"I'm a girl, thank you!" said Alice, beginning to shake Jessica.

Jessica began shaking Alice as well. "Wish I could tell the difference!"

Bella went across the room and grabbed Alice. "It's okay," she said.

Angela had grabbed Jessica. "Just let it go," she said to her.

"It's in the past," Bella said, finally managing to get Alice away from the pushing and shoving Jessica.

"Right," said Alice, still tense.

"It's all good," said Angela, rubbing Jessica's shoulders. "But you should apologize for being...a little insensitive," she said.

"Fine," said Jessica with a snarl. "Bella, I apologize for being insensitive. And Alice, I apologize for...getting in your face and stuff."

"No worries," said Alice. "I apologize for hitting you."

"Does stuff like this always happen?" asked James with a smirk.

"Kind of," said Katie, obviously trying hard not to laugh.

"No, the quarterback—and captain, it's the same guy—did not seduce me. We are actually in a committed relationship."

Bella needed to sit down. "Oh...really?" she said.

James nodded. "He told me everything."

Bella sighed. "Did he?"

James leaned up against the wall beside his new bed. "Well, everyone knows you did that program in Europe during the second half of second year," he said softly.

"She only just got back three months ago," Jessica put in.

"Shut up, Jessica," said Bella.

"He told me about...it," said James.

"Obviously," replied Bella.

Alice, Angela, and Katie stared at Bella.

"What?!" she demanded.

Alice sat down next to Bella. "Did...something happen with...?"

"Mike," said Bella. "You can say his name."

"Fine," said Alice. "Did something happen with Mike?"

"I got knocked up, okay?!" cried Bella. "And the reason why we hooked up at the party was because Mike was afraid that he was gay! I wanted to lose my virginity and he wanted to be sure he was straight. So...we did it...and I got pregnant, and when I said I was in Europe, I was really doing homeschooling. I gave the baby up for adoption and I can't see...him...until he turns eighteen."

Alice put an arm around Bella. "I'm sorry..."

"It doesn't matter, anyway," she said, stiff in Alice's arms, and wanting desperately to change the subject. "James...how can we get back over to Tillicum Park Prep?"

"You want to get me back in?" he asked.

Bella shrugged. "Well...sure," she said. "Can we get you back in and check it out for ourselves?"

"I guess so," he said.

"Okay," said Bella. "How do we do it?"

James smiled. "It's a little complicated..."

"We have time," replied Bella.

He shook his head. "I just don't know if you have it in you."

"Come on!" said Bella. "Olympic National Academy sucks! It's full of girls..."

"That might not be a problem for some people," said James.

"A third, maybe," said Bella.

"But tell us," said Alice.

"We want out!" cried Angela.

"Please," said Jessica, "put us out of our misery."

"Really, I'm just the seducer in this," said Katie.

James sighed. "Well...I think we have land mines..."

"Land mines?!" cried Bella.

James laughed. "No, I'm just kidding. We do have cameras, though."

"But...we're girls," said Bella. "How do we get in?"

He smiled at them all. "You thought I was a girl?" he asked.

They all nodded at him.

"Well...I can help you pass for boys."

"But, what about you?" asked Bella.

He smiled. "Don't you worry about me," he said. "I've got it covered."
