Chapter 10: 1:03 am
P.o.v of Caleena
We were at the hospital. We looked through a window and saw, how doctors and nurses operated Ayana. She had jumped off our roof, fell on the tar and stones and little wooded things had bored into her chest, as my son told Nicaise and me. He had tried to convince her not to jump, but when he saw, it had no effect, he had no other choice, then let her... I was scared as hell. I knew, that coping with her mother's suicide wasn't easy. It wouldn't be for me too, when I was in Ayana's shoes. Nicaise lay an arm around me. I had started nibbling on my fingernails again. I saw that Yophiel was reproaching himself for what had happened. The encouraging smile, I gave him made him feel a bit better. We stood there and saw, that the doctors got nervous. The beeping, that symbolized her heartbeat was gone. There was just a long beep. Yophiel shared the doctors nervousness and stared to hit the door, so that he can come in. My husband needed to hold him closely, that he wouldn't go in. "Yophiel!", I called when he hit his father in the face to free himself. He hit the door again. It cracked but didn't break. Not now...Inside the nursed and doctors had a defibrillator and rubbed the two things, that looked like irons, against each other. "3, 2, 1, clear!", called a male voice. A doctor pushed the things on Ayana's chest. Her body lifted a bit, but the long beeping tone was still there.Yophiel still tried to get in, while I and Nicaise looked scared through the window. The man, who had called "Clear", tapped on the defibrillator and called again: "3, 2, 1, clear!" Ayana's body lifted again, but nothing happened. They tried again, but without success."What's the time?", asked a male doctor. "1:03, doctor", replied a female nurse, after looking on the clock. Another doctor meant to someone with a clipboard: "Time of death 1:03 a.m." They put off their face masks and the medical gloves. We sat down, without words. Yophiel had now a complete breakdown. He started crying and hit the concrete wall. I imagined, to be hearing his bones breaking. My son sat on the cold ground and cried silently. When Nicaise went to him and hugged him, Yophiel hit him so hard, that Nicaise's nose started bleeding. Yophiel stood up and went away.I couldn't face the fact, that Ayana was dead...We sat quiet in the room, where we had watched the operation, when a male nurse came to Nicaise and me. "Mr. and Mrs. Esha." - We nodded. "I am sorry for the loss of you step-niece." "Thank you."He told us, what to do, and what they would do.We drove home quietly.
