Prologue

"Link start!"

Vibrant colors filled Misu's sight as she logged into the new game that had come out for NerveGear; Sword Art Online.

Misu materialized into the bright, pixelated SAO world. She looked around the small town as her long brown hair fell in front of her amber eyes. There were tall buildings and little building in the small Town of Beginnings.

Each building had a unique aspect about it that Misu couldn't quite point out, but that's how Misu liked it. Everything about the game looked so real, even her appearance with her long, brown hair and deep, brown eyes

Misu breathed in the fresh air as the new players joined one by one.

Misu ran through the town without hesitation as she knew where she was going. Other players payed no attention to her as she ran through the winding streets and cobbled alleyways.

She finally made it to the owls she was looking for, there was a boar and a wolf in close proximity to each other.

Misu raised her arm and let her sword go behind her back, just above her shoulder. She focused on a sword skill and her sword turned into a vibrant blue. Misu attacked and her sword went through the boar as it's HP bar went from green, to yellow, to blue and them it disappeared into tons of pixels.

Misu did the same to the wolf as it charged at her, but the wolf did something unexpected. It dodged.

"You wanna play like that, huh?" Misu said aloud.

She started slashing at the wolf and hitting every time with her blue sword that wouldn't low until she got the timing just right. She raised her arm behind her back and pulled out another blue sword that was a navy color, while the other one was an ocean blue. Misu attacked the dog once more and it's HP was no more, it vanished into tiny pixels like the boar had.

Putting her swords back into their respectful sheaths, Misu heard the ring of a bell ping back and forth. She looked up at the giant bell that sat at the top of one of the towers. Suddenly, there was a bright blue glow. Forced teleportation.

Apparently, every player in the game had been teleported to the center of the Town of Beginnings.

Misu heard confused voices fill the space with noise.

"Maybe it's a bug?"
"Yeah, everyone teleported at once is a bug."

"It's probably just an event."
"I doubt it."

"It's just part of the opening ceremonies."
"You have a good point there."

But Misu knew it was none of these things, and it made her worried.

Suddenly there were red lights saying 'WARNING' and 'SYSTEM ANNOUNCEMENT' that covered the center of the town like a dome. There was a red goop that came down from the dome and took form of a robe that, supposedly, had someone in it.

"Players." it spoke. "Welcome to my world."

'My world'? That's not right, no! H-he's the game master! Misu thought to herself.

"My name is Akihiko Kayaba." Misu gasped, it was the creator of the game. "As of this moment, I am the only person able to control this world."

Misu heard people muttering to themselves.

"Really?"

"This is really elaborate!"

"No." Misu said.

Akihiko went on, "I'm sure you've already noticed that the logout button is missing from the main menu." Misu swiped down wars with her right hand and checked, it wasn't there. "But this is not a defect in the game. I repeat... This is not a defect, but a key feature to Sword Art Online. You cannot logout of SAO of your own will. And no one on the outside can shut down or remove the NerveGear.

"Should this be attempted, the transmitter inside the NerveGear will emit powerful microwaves, destroying your brain and thus ending your life."

Panic struck in Misu's heart, soul, and mind as people tried denying it or had accepted it. But Misu knew all that he said was right, and that struck a cord in Misu.

Two people tried to walk away, but there was a barrier where they tried.

Akihiko went on again, "Unfortunately, there have been several instances where player's friend and families have ignored this warning, and attempted to forcibly remove the NerveGear. As a result, 213 players have exited permanently, from both Aincrad and the real world."

Misu's eyes widened. Two hundred and thirteen? But tha-

"What about Arigo?!" Misu accidentally blurted out loud. People looked at her as if she were crazy.

The player next to Misu looked at her as well, "Who is Arigo?" The player was a girl with long, dirty blond hair and purple eyes.

"Arigo is my big brother, he was playing this game as well. I only left to do some practice while he went to a shop. Oh no, m-my family probably tried to get him out!" Misu started breathing heavily as the girl patted her back.

"As you can see, news organizations across the world are reporting this situation, including multiple deaths. This, you can assume that the danger of a NerveGear being removed had been reduced." Akihiko pulled up news articles thy had headlines on them, but Misu could only see the faces. One of the faces had short brown hair and brown eyes.

Misu's eyes widened again. ARIGO! She thought. The girl consoling Misu watched her and saw Misu's eyes widen and tears forming her eyes. The girl knew that her brother had been one of the two hundred and thirteen. Silent tears were leaking down Misu's face as she listened to the Game Master.

"So, I would like you all to focus on clearing the game. But be sure to keep this in mind. There is no longer any function to revive someone within the game. The instant your HP drops to zero, your avatars will vanish forever. And simultaneously, your brains will be destroyed by NerveGear."

Misu thought of the wolf from earlier, what if it had bitten her and killed her. She would be dead without even knowing.

"The one condition for you to escape this game. You are presently on floor 1 of Aincrad, the lowest floor." Akihiko pulled up a digital map of Aincrad showing the first floors and all the others.

"If you make your way through the dungeon and defeat the Floor Boss, you may advance to the next level. Defeat the final boss on floor 100 and you will clear the game."

People yelled out their opinions and muttered, 'Clear 100 floors?'

Someone in front of Misu and the girl consoling her, a player said, "Clear one hundred floors? That's impossible, not even the beta-testers made it that far, right?"

The guy was right, even Misu didn't make it that far, and she probably made it farther than any other beta-tester.

"Now then, finally. I've provided you all with a present in your item storage. Please see for yourselves."

Misu knew she shouldn't do it, but curiosity got the best of her. Swiping down and choosing her inventory, Misu saw a label that said, 'Mirror'.

Misu took it out of her inventory as she wiped her tears away and looked at the mirror, suddenly there was a bright blue glow. Once the glow stopped, Misu looked around to see completely different people than the ones she saw earlier.

No one knew who each other was unless they were friend in real life. Misu looked back in the mirror to see her long, bright blue hair and piercing blue eyes staring back at her. The girl that was consoling Misu had long blond hair and grey eyes. Everyone changed into who they were in real life.

"But the NerveGear can only see your fave, not your body type or anything else." Someone said aloud.

Misu answered, "The patting we did before, the calibration. We had to pat our bodies."

"Right now," the deep voice of Akihiko started. "You must all be wondering, 'Why? Why would Akihiko Kayaba, developer of Sword Art Online and the NerveGear, do such a thing?' My goal has already been achieved. I created Sword Art online for one reason...to create this world and meddle in it. And now, all is complete. This ends the tutorial for the official launch of Sword Art Online. I wish you luck, players."

Akihiko turned back into the red goop and disappeared with the red dome, making it light again.

There was silence as the idea of dying and being stuck in this world sunk in.

The man I looked up to, who I idled, has betrayed me. If I die here, in this game, I die in real life. I know it's all true.

The silence was broke by a young girl with pigtails screaming "No... No!" The girl fell down beside Misu as she cried.

Misu couldn't stay there any longer. So she ran.

Misu, the blue player, ran to a field where and one could find her. Misu wanted to be alone. Misu fell to the ground and cried her heart out for her older brother and her parents. Arigo had died, Misu was all alone as she cried in the world that would bring her downfall. But Misu would bring it's downfall first.

"I will bring you down Aincrad and Akihiko. I will get revenge for my brother!"
