Part 3: The Storm

"Um, Ezra. Your tower is a lot taller than I remember it being," Zeb tensed up. No way was he climbing that broken later. The group had finally made it to the rusty communications tower after worrying because the sky was getting very grey very fast.

"It's fine Zeb. I've climbed up this thing hundreds of times. I used to live here. Remember?"

"Oh, I remember fine. I'm still not going up there." Rex laughed then started to pull himself up the latter.

"Fine. Stay out here and get electrocuted by that lightning I just saw out there." He pointed with one hand over to the horizon. On queue, thunder roared loudly above the surrounding clouds.

"We have to get up there quickly so that we can contact the rest of the crew before the storm jams our coms!" Sabine had to yell in order to be heard over the wind. All five of them started to quickly climb the ladder to escape the rain that was threatening to fall. When they all got to the top, (including Zeb who looked like he was going to pass out) Ezra tried to open the door but it was stuck.

"Move over!" yelled Zeb. He pushed Ezra behind him and rammed into the door. It busted open and they all darted inside just as the rain began to pore.

"Oh my gosh. That was crazy!" exclaimed Maud. Who until now had been relatively silent sense the group landed on the planet. After the panting stopped, everyone seamed to take in their surroundings. Ezra sat down on a couch that had a bunch of holes in it.

"Make yourselves at home. Looks like we are going to be here for a wile." Sabine walked towards the back of the room.

"Where is all of the old transmitting equipment? We should have contacted Hera or Commander Sato by now." She crossed her arms and started to shiver. Ezra quickly got up and covered her with a dirty blanket that smelled like mildew. Sabine pretended not to be trying not to vomit, for Ezra's sake. Maud stared at her. What is her problem? Then Sabine remembered that not everyone was used to having a teenage boy following them around. Flirting with them whenever they had the chance. She must not think it is appropriate for a Sargent to be acting this way on a mission.

"Come on. It's back here. I'm surprised that most of my stuff hasn't already been raided out." They walked to the back of the room. Sabine knelt down and blew some of the dust out of an old holoprojector.

"Think we can get it working?" she said.

"Maybe." Wile the two teens were working on contacting The Ghost, the rest of the crew was quietly looking threw Ezra's old things. They knew he would be mad if he found out, but could you blame them? The tower wasn't the most exciting place to be and the stuff was just laying there.

"Anyone want to tell me why Ezra would need a lifetime supply of broken hair pens?" asked Rex.

"For lock picking. Duh," replied Zeb, happy because he knew something the old war hero didn't. Then, he looked over at Maud. She was just sitting in the corner, not saying a word. Just like on the Phantom. He wondered if she maybe thought they were weird.

"What's wrong kid?" he asked. She didn't seem to notice. It was as if she was lost in her thoughts. He tried again, this time louder.

"Maud? Something wrong?" She blinked and looked at him. Zeb put on a concerned face, so she quickly came up with something so he wouldn't get suspicious. Especially since he seemed like a real nice guy.

"I'm just... afraid of storms. And we are in a tower surrounded by lightning, so I am currently fearing for my life." That was actually true. She had hated storms ever since that night, so long ago. She decided that adding a shaky leg would do the trick.
"Oh, yeah," said Rex with a guilty chuckle.

"I guess an abandoned com tower isn't the safest place to be during a storm. We'll be okay though. I guarantee it." Maud smiled awkwardly at him. She wanted to test how much they knew the real Ezra Bridger.

"So, Ezra really used to live in this shank?" Maud asked as if she could not imagine anyone living in such a place.

"Yeah. His folks were taken to prison by the empire when he was 8. I guess he needed somewhere to stay. Hard to imagine if you ask me." He was 7. Thought Maud. She was surprised that the street rat had told them that much. I guess he's gone soft.

"Hey guys. I think I've found something!" Everyone turned to face Rex who was holding a small brown book. He flipped through it.

"Boring." He announced as he through it over his shoulder. Zeb caught it and opened to a random page, squinting as he turned it in different directions trying to make sense of it.

"I think it's the kid's old journal!" He exclaimed with surprise.

"Hey guys, we've contacted Hera. She says we should just flop the mission." Came Ezra voice as he neared the room. Zeb quickly hid the book behind his back, forgetting that Ezra could sense when he was anxious. Ezra and Sabine entered the room.

"She said they'll be here as sooo-- Zeb what are you hiding behind your back?" Ezra gave Zeb a suspicious/worried look.

"Nuh, nothing. Just an old book." Ezra frowned and walked over to him, trying to looked behind him. He snatched his old diary out from behind Zeb and starred at it.

"Where did you find this?" he asked. His voice sounded in between panicked and confused.

"It was behind your couch. Is it yours?" Of course it was Ezra's, but that didn't mean he wanted anything to do with it. Nor did he want his only friends to have anything to do with it. He threw it back behind the couch.

"It's nothing. Just some old notes." Rex sighed, he hated it when people didn't trust him with secrets. Everyone shrugged it off and forgot about the 'notes'. Everyone except Maud who knew very well that those were not just notes written by Ezra.

"Kannan said that once the storm stops we need to get to the Phantom because that's were there going to try and meet us. The rain seems to be calming down so we should get ready to head out," said Sabine. Ezra butted in,

"Why don't we just get a head start?" Everyone looked at him. It was clear that he wanted to get out of there as soon a possible.

"It's stopped raining and they are going to be waiting for us if we don't leave soon. Right?" Everyone mumbled in agreement. They knew he was right, but they didn't want to sit next to a wet Zeb on the way back to the Ghost. Maud was the last one to leave the tower. Quietly she reached her hand behind the couch and grabbed the journal, then she slipped it into her camera bag. As she left, she took a picture of the abandoned tower. She felt like a stalker. This isn't about you. Maud reminded herself. Silently, she ran to join the others.
