Part 12: The Vase of Roses

The next day, it was Ezra's turn to wonder where his friend was. They had fallen asleep the night before after watching the moon rise and then the ships flying over them in the sky. He got up from the ground and walked over to the SN-S3T where Maud was busy packing her and Ezra's bag with the few belongings that they had though to take with them.

"Are you going somewhere?" he asked. Maud shook her head and looked at him. "No. We are." she said. "We're going on a walk, to clear our heads. I need to show you something."

"Kanan? Kanan wake up!" shouted Hera. Kanan bolted upright and rubbed the sleep from his eyes. "What do you want, Woman?" he asked. Hera crossed her arms. "The kids are gone." she said. Kanan yawned.

"What do you mean, gone?" he asked. Hera slapped him in the face. "I mean, Ezra ran away and now Sabine and Zeb took the Phantom to go find him," Kanan tried to lay back down, but Hera pulled him back up. "We have to do something." she said.

Kanan shook his head. "My padawan is fully capable of going on a mission of self-discovery by himself. We don't need to get involved. If Sabine and Zeb want to check up on him, that's fine." he turned away from her and laid down again, his eyes squeezed shut. Hera put her hands on her hips. "That girl from Cloud City went with him." she said. Kanan opened his eyes.

"Are we almost there?" Whined Ezra after he and the girl from Cloud City had been hiking through the grasslands of Lothal for over thirty minutes. "I told you," started Maud. "We are going to the Capital, your guess is as good as mine." Ezra groaned and looked ahead. If he looked very closely in the fields in front of them, he could almost see an outline of the tall structures of Capital City. He knew that it was probably his imagination.

"Listen, Jedi." said Maud after a few more minutes. That caught Ezra's attention. "I already told you what was going on here, but it's time for you to see for yourself."

About ten minutes later, the two had made it to the city. Ezra still wasn't sure where they were going, but he kept on walking anyway. When Maud randomly stopped walking, he did the same. "Ezra, I doubt anyone in this area is in Shyer's gang, but we should still keep a low profile just in case," he nodded, but something still didn't seem right. "Why are we in my old neighborhood?" He asked. "Because I need you to know that this whole planet is being affected. Not just because of Shyer." Said Maud. Duh, the Empire was also here. Ezra already knew that. But then they came across Ezra's house, and he forgot about what they were doing there.

Ezra's house was gone. Well, not completely. There were a few pieces of wall and support bar in the back. But even those were covered in graffiti, and not the artistic kind. The space Ezra used to sit, waiting for his parents to return from their extremely long business trip was now covered in rubble. But that wasn't what Ezra was looking at.

In the middle of what used to be the entrance to his home sat a vase full of roses. They were dead which meant whatever empathetic lady had placed them there did it a while ago. Ezra walked up to the vase and kicked it with his foot as hard as he could. They were leaving flowers? They felt sorry for them? Really? Where were the flowers when his parents got taken away? When he was getting beaten up by Shyer and his friends? The vase shattered against a piece of house.

"Ezra-" started Maud. "Why did you take me here?" He asked. "I didn't!" Maud protested. "I forgot that we have to pass your house to get to old Joe's." Ezra turned and kept walking as Maud tried to keep up from behind. "I'm sorry." she said. Ezra nodded. He wasn't mad at her, just frustrated and stressed out.

Old Joe's bar was located in the center of the city because everyone liked going there and Joe thought it would be unfair for some people to have to walk more than others. But at that moment, Ezra would have rather walked to the other side of Capital City. He opened the door and was immediately greeted with the sent of cheap, watered-down alcohol. He was home.

"Ezra!" someone from a booth shouted. Ezra and Maud turned to him and saw none other than Old Joe himself (RIP Old Joe). "Hey, Kid! How you been?" they shook hands and Ezra smiled. "To be honest, we kind of have a big problem on our hands." Old Joe was one of the only people in the galaxy who Ezra was honest with his feeling to. The man's expression got serious. "I know what you're talking about. Come with me." The two looked at each other, then followed him behind the bar, the place where only employees were allowed to go.

If you guys are interested, I just started a new original story called a Walk for the Flightless (I know the name's cheesy) and you can find it on my page. I'm really proud of it so far, but tell me what you think.
