26. Irreversible Mistake
Back in the castle, in the throne room, a deadly silence prevailed as tension grew by each passing second.
A fire of hatred and anger grew in Damien, burning his insides as he looked at the person whom he once in the past considered as a best friend.
"Damien..." The King spoke as he tried to communicate with the man in black robes. Who would have known that one small mistake could lead two friends to break apart in such a manner that the gap would never be mended again?
"...stop all this. Stop killing innocent people. Did we once not make a promise with each other that we would protect the innocent? Did we not promise each other that if, one day, a misunderstanding would form between us, we would sit and talk it out? So please, let's talk."
A scoff escaped the Dark Lord's lips as he looked at the King in a pitiful manner. "Sit and talk it out? Talk about what Edward? What do you even have left to explain after that night? No, I have not come here to listen to your fabricated lies, I have come here to make you suffer...just like how you made me suffer."
A loud bang exploded near the castle as Edward and Bella looked outside in worry. A huge fire had started to burn, destroying anything that was in its way.
"Listen to me Damien, please, calm down. It's not how it seems. Did you ever give me a chance to explain? How can you just make assumptions about my actions?"
Damien looked at Edward and for a fraction of a second, the King noticed his friends expression soften but it quickly went away as anger once again made itself visible.
"Edward, why didn't you explain me then? Why now? That even after almost twenty five years. Where were you when I was in pain? Where were you and your so called words of comfort when I was all alone? How could you be so heartless, Edward? How could you even think of letting me burn to death, that even at the place where we first met, the place where our friendship began."
Damien took a deep breath, his chest heaving, anger starting to drive him crazy.
"Damien, my friend, I was forced and was left with no choice. If I had not acted first, my father would have. I had to do it."
"You did, didn't you? You did have to leave me alone to almost succumb to death, didn't you?" Damien said, his voice dangerously low. "Have you ever wondered how it must feel like to be betrayed by the person you love and care the most? You probably have not. So, why don't I make you feel!"
And with that, Damien raised his hand, his eyes burning bright as before the King could react, he shouted in a voice clear as crystal... "Elenchos Myalou."
And then whispered, "It's your fault Edward, not mine. Now, you suffer while I enjoy."
