05. The Old Book
The empty corridors of the huge castle echoed with the sound of running footsteps as the girl tried to escape the darkness that was slowly approaching her.
The lights of the corridor flickered as dark wisps of air started reaching out to her.
She screamed in fear as her chest heaved and her lungs slowly started running out of air.
Everything started becoming blurry as she started feeling dizzy because of the continuous running. Her steps started faltering while her speed lessened, energy levels slowly draining to zero.
She was about to give up, about to fall down, when a pair of arms caught her gently in the nick of time.
And just like that the darkness vanished into thin air, as if it never existed before. A calm and surreal feeling made its way in her heart as she felt protected and safe in the arms of this unknown person.
Holding this person's hands, she looked up to take a glimpse of her rescuer. Lifting her head, her dark brown orbs met with his bright blue ones as a gasp left her mouth. Stretching her hand forward, her fingertips were about to touch him when everything suddenly faded away and her eyes closed, an action which once again drowned her into an abyss of loneliness.
Aera's eyes shot open as she immediately jerked front, beads of sweat forming on her forehead while her body trembled.
That dream, she had it again.
The corridor, the dark wisps of air and above all those blue eyes...she saw them again.
A gentle breeze entered the dim lighted room through an open window. The birds chirped while the sun's rays fell on Aera who sat on a chair kept beside the window.
The pendulum of the old grandfather clock swayed to and fro in a repetitive manner, and each time it did so, a soft noise of the clock ticking could be heard.
A sigh left Aera's lips as she sat back comfortably on the chair. Infront of her were kept piles of papers containing so many complicated numbers and long words that caused her head to spin every time she went through them.
"Great." She mumbled with an annoyed tone in her voice.
It was just supposed to be a short nap of fifteen minutes and now what? She slept for four hours straight.
It was now seven of the evening as Aera sat straight and look a pen in her hand, trying to focus on the work she had to complete.
But once again, she found her mind wondering away. Recalling that dream or to be more specific those blue eyes she saw in her dream.
For the past few days, whenever Aera would fall asleep, the same dream would be seen by her every once in a while. The dream of her being chased by some dark spirit and in the end, she being rescued by some Blue Eyed Prince.
"But why? Why do I keep having that strange dream?" Aera would think to herself. "And who is that blue eyed person?"
Pursing her lips together, Aera kept the pen aside in frustration as she rested her back on the chair and looked outside the window, at the lush green meadow's that lay ahead.
Her eyebrows came close, as lines formed on her forehead. "Who is that man?" She thought to herself for the upteenth time as she tried to recall how he looked. But everytime she tried to do so, only his blue eyes would be recalled by her. His face, however, never clearly visible.
She turned her head around as she then fixed her gaze at the bookshelf on the top of which an old book was kept. A sad smile made its made on her face as memories of the past rushed by her mind.
"Keep this book safe with you and when you turn to the age of twenty years, head towards the old wisteria tree near the woods at midnight, when the moon is shining brightly down below. And once the time which joins the previous day and the next day comes, without a delay open the book."
Getting up, Aera walked towards the bookshelf that was situated at the left corner of the room. Picking up that old book which her late grandmother had once handed her five year ago, Aera wiped away the dust that had settled on it with a piece of cloth.
After that incident that had taken place five years ago, Aera usually wondered about the mysterious man who saved her life that day.
She gently touched the brown cover of the book.
Many a times in the past, because of curiosity, she had tried to open the book but strangely enough it never did. It was as if some magical spell was done on it which caused it to be tightly closed.
"Tomorrow midnight..." She thought. "Tomorrow I will be turning twenty and midnight is the time which joins the previous day and a new day."
Was she ready for tomorrow midnight? Ready to see if her grandmother's words were true?
"Grandma, Jimin, I miss you guys a lot. I wish I could have you both by my side." Aera whispered to herself as she stood alone in the cottage which was once a place where she would always find love and comfort. The place which was now just a reminder of the horrible events that took place in the past.
"I hope you both are in a better place now."
