Epilogue
Cool air was caressing my exposed skin. I closed my eyes and just let the relaxation take over me. It was quiet considering the specialty of the day. If I was in India, my parents and I would have sat in front of the screen, waiting for the countdown to start.
Yes, it was New Year's Eve. The nightmare had ended three days ago. We four decided to celebrate the New Year's day on our building's terrace. It was thankfully empty and quiet. I didn't understand why anyone hadn't already booked this spot. It was the best place to watch the New Year fireworks. Maybe everyone had gone clubbing. We brought up recliner chairs onto the terrace and were now lounging lazily, waiting for the countdown to start. After the frenzy I had been in the last few days, this was all I could ask for. Silence and peace.
"Here's your drink, baby." Noah poured white wine in the tall wine glass. His lips reached mine before the glass reached mine. His kisses made me tipsier than the drinks, but he didn't need to know that. Kevin and Mitchell were holding hands between their chairs, staring contently at the sky. I thought Mitchell was going to stay with me and Noah was going to Kevin's after her rescue. Though I was happy to get Mitchell back, I couldn't say the same thing about the prospect of losing Noah.
But Kevin didn't have any of that. He need not fear for anything now. His parents couldn't frighten him any more. He had seen worse. He declared Mitchell was going to live with him. That meant I got to keep Noah, my adorable cook aka my boyfriend.
Mitchell and Kevin went straight to the police station after the incident in the cave. The department and the media were furious on Detective Graham for not checking the dental records at the orphanage before declaring it was Mitchell. No one questioned the elephant in the room that the dead girl's face was exactly like Mitchell's. They were busy searching for their missing police officer who was in hell now.
"My parents are going to visit this Sunday," Kevin said out of the blue. The only good thing that had come out of this whole ordeal was Kevin's parents finally understood him. They approved his relationship with Mitchell, not like they had much choice. Kevin's father was now the leader of the cult with Magnus's demise. The hellfire was closed once again. He vowed not to engage his cult in danger as Magnus did.
Things were great.
"Hey, only ten seconds left for the arrival of the New Year," Mitchell said looking down at her phone. We all were up on our feet. The countdown started.
10....9....8.....7....6......5......4......3.....2......1
"Happy New Year." Cries rose up from every corner of Boston. Fireworks erupted in the sky in rainbows of colors and myriad forms. My hands were draped around Noah's neck and his hands were holding my waist. Our lips met with the fireworks in the background matching the fireworks in me. I welcomed the New Year with the best kiss ever.
"Happy New Year," we said in unison. It was not just a phrase or a mere hope. It was the truth. I knew this in my bones. Things were going to be great ahead.
