Chapter 7: Erised's Mirror, Nicholas Flamel & Norbert
Harry began to open his Christmas presents in a happy way, for it was the first time he received gifts. He began by the sweater that Mrs. Weasley had sent him, thanking it with a wide smile. Then he noticed that there was another gift that had his name: it was a package. Cora observed the package that Harry had in his hands: it seemed light. The redhead approached her friend and was perfectly aware that there was a note attached to the package, in which there was something written in a stylized writing.
—That's strange... it says that it's for me... —said Harry slightly confused after examining the bundle on a suspicious way—. "Your father left this in my possession before he died. It is time it was returned you. Use it well." —Harry read with a serene voice. After a few seconds of doubt, the child finally decided to open the bundle, from which it extracted a big pledge.
—What is it? —asked Ron while he ate some jelly beans.
—It looks like.... a cape. —Harry answered him after getting up of the armchair where it had sat down, supporting the pledge with its hands.
—Try it on, let's see how it looks. —suggested Cora with a slight tone of curiosity while she observed it, at the same time that she sat down in other of the armchairs.
Harry did what Cora had suggested, and put the cloak on his shoulders. Surprisingly, the cloak made the body of Harry completely invisible, leaving only his head visible, which seemed to float in the air.
—Wow! —gasped Ron.
—I don't see my body! —cried Harry as he turned around himself, with a smile from ear to ear.
—I know what it is... —said the redhead getting up from the armchair—. It's an invisibility cloak, but there are very few.
—Who has given it to you? —asked Ron, approaching Harry.
—I don't know. It doesn't have any names. —replied Harry—. It just says "use it well"...
That same night, without waiting too long, Harry went to the library to search for information about Nicholas Flamel in the Forbidden Section. The boy was accompanied by the red-haired girl, who that night could not even sleep due to the excitement of this new tool, which would help them to sneak away at night. The library was dark and it seemed enchanted due to the great silence that reigned there. Harry decided to carry an oil lamp on, in order to see the shelves and the many books that were kept in there. While carrying it in his hand, being the only thing visible, the child was about to be frightened on several occasions, for it seemed that the lamp floated alone in the air. Calmly, the two children hidden by the invisibility cloak managed to delve deeper into the library, where the Forbidden Section was. The children entered the Forbidden Section after unlocking the lock. They began to look with their eyes among the various titles that there were, however, some were intelligible and others did not even possess one.
—Here! Nicholas Flamel! —cried Harry quietly, leaving the lamp on the table, while he was getting out of the robe that covered them both. Cora, on the other hand, stretched a little to reach the book they wished to read and left it on the table. Harry opened the book, from whose interior came a heartbreaking and very strident cry, making the two students to panic. In an attempt to silence the screaming book, Harry slammed it and returned it to his bookshelf, but it was too late, for the two children clearly heard a hoarse voice, which certainly belonged to the Hogwarts warden.
—Who Is there? —asked Filch as he walked through the halls of the library with a lamp of light.
Harry quickly grabbed the cloak from above the table, throwing the lantern he had brought to the ground in the process, shattering the glass into small pieces. The children were covered with the robe and began to move through the halls in silence.
—I know you're there. —said Filch as he appeared in his range of visión—. I can smell you.
The two children passed by Filch without even touching him, but with their hearts beating loudly and quickly in their chests, since they could almost swear that he could see them. They managed to sneak out of the library and sighed lightly, believing they were safe. Within a few seconds they found the cat of Filch, and for fear that she could see them, they began to walk quickly, moving away from the place. Which was not their surprise, when they folded a corner, to see Professor Snape and Professor Quirrell.
—Se-Severus, what...?
—Don't turn me into your enemy, Quirrell. —threatened the potions teacher, interrupting the stutterer professor.
—What do you mean? —asked Quirrell.
—You know very well what I mean... —said Snape, before turning his face to the right, for he thought he had clearly heard a breath.
Cora and Harry quickly covered their mouths, as they were passing by their side just a few centimetres away, and they did not want to be discovered. Snape extended his hand to the place where he had heard the breath, but did not catch anything, as Harry and Cora had moved away from him. After a few seconds, Snape turned his attention to Quirrell, grabbing him by the neck of his robe.
—Soon we will have a little talk... —said Snape in a dark voice—. When you finally decide who you are willing to seek out your loyalty...
At that time Filch came running, interrupting the conversation between the two professors.
—Professors, I found this. —the man informed as he showed them the broken lamp—. It was in the Forbidden Section —he added—: It's still hot, so there's some student awake.
As Filch said these words the two professors and he himself ran in the direction of the library, without even noticing that a side door opened and closed alone.
Harry and Cora, once safe inside that room where they had entered, stripped themselves of the invisibility cloak, letting it fall to the ground. The children began to observe this new environment, where they found several desks and chairs piled up against the walls. It seemed to be a classroom in disuse. However, there seemed to be something there that stood out for not belonging to that place: a magnificent mirror, of great proportions, almost reaching the ceiling, with a gilded frame. This one was supported on some supports and at the top a recorded inscription could be differentiated: "Erised stra ehru oyt ube cafru oyt on wohsi".
The two children approached the mirror, leaving Harry in front of him, not only finding his image reflected, but finding out that there were two other people behind him. Frightened, the boy turned two more times, proving that these two people were actually only in the mirror. They were a man and a woman. The woman had dark red hair, and her eyes were bright green, equal to those of Harry. The tall man, was thin, black-haired and wearing glasses, just like Harry. The boy approached the mirror with slow steps, until his nose almost touched the glass.
—Mom? —whispered—. Dad?
The two adults smiled and nodded. Harry smiled at them too, and realized that the redhead, her friend, was also reflected in the mirror, since she was right behind his back.
—Look, Cora! They're my parents! —cried the child as he held her hand and placed her beside him, in front of the mirror.
The redhead looked at the mirror and after a few seconds of doing so, her beautiful crimson eyes opened with astonishment and some strangeness.
—Can you see them? —asked Harry.
—N-No... I can't. —sentenced Cora in a trembling voice—. "I can see... two adults, they are... very similar to me. There is something else: a great crimson flame at their side...", thought the girl after observing the image of the mirror, but that made her dizzy and she had to walk away from the mirror, since in addition to those two adults, Cora saw herself in the flames. Within a few seconds, the flames gave a heartbreaking cry consuming everything in the reflection. That single vision caused the red-haired girl a great headache and a great fear.
—Cora... you've become pale. —said Harry—. Are you ok? What did you see?
—I've seen my parents. They were congratulating me on getting a good grade on the exams. —the girl lied while she looked away from the mirror—. "Who... are they?", thought the redhead as she leaned her back against the wall, while remembering in a distant and blurred way, a sweet melody.
—Um... I see. —said Harry, skeptical about her words, for he did not believe that good news was what had made her pale.
Harry didn't know how long he had been contemplating his family in the mirror's reflection, but after hearing a distant noise he returned to reality. Now they had to go back to their dorms.
It had been two more days since that night. Harry was now more and more attached to the mirror and had already gone in his search the night before. This night wouldn't be any different. Both Ron and Cora had advised him not to look for it, but Harry, obfuscated in seeing his family again, was not going to listen to them. Without even hesitating for a second, Harry went back to the room where the mirror was, (finding it more easily than on the previous occasions) and went back to sit in front of it, observing his parents. He was there for a few minutes until...
—You again, Harry?
The child jumped up and rose from the ground quickly after hearing that voice. As soon as he turned around, he could see the himself Albus Dumbledore.
—I... I hadn't seen you, sir. —the child said almost in a whisper.
—I see that like many before you, you have known the delights of the Erised Mirror. —the headmaster of Hogwarts sentenced—. I trust you to be aware of its usefulness.
—Well... it showed to me my family...
—And your friend Ron was reflected as captain, and your friend Cora with her parents. —said Dumbledore.
—How do you know...?
—I don't need a cloak to make me invisible. —replied the man with a smile—. Tell me, what do you think this mirror shows to every person who looks into it?
Harry shook his head, since he did not know.
—Let me give you a clue: The happiest man on Earth would look into the mirror and see only himself, exactly as he is. —Dumbledore explained.
—So it shows us what we want, whatever it is?
—Yes and no. —said calmly, Dumbledore—. It shows us, neither more nor less than the deepest and most desperate desires of our hearts. That's why you Harry, you've never met your father and your mother, you see them here, with you. —said the man—. But remember this: the Mirror will not grant us knowledge or truth. Men have wasted away before it, not knowing if what they have seen is real, or even possible.
Harry looked at the mirror calmly after those words.
—This mirror will be moved to a new house tomorrow. —said Dumbledore—. And I must ask Harry, don't look for him. It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live, remember that.
Christmas holidays were over, starting another school term. Cora had spent many days creating new spells with the stones her parents had given her, and from time to time, she had nightmares about what she had seen in the mirror. She also remembered again and again a song, which was becoming clearer every day, and in which she could already distinguish the voice of a Young woman. That day she was in the library with her friends, while she channeled hiser thoughts into one of the stones.
"Well, I've already created two spells... let's start with the next one.", thought Cora as she saved the gold and green stones in the bag, and then drawned the red stone.
—What a fool I've been! —cried Hermione as she entered the library with a giant book on her hands—. I've sent you in the wrong section! —she said after dropping the book to the table with a resounding blow.
Cora jumped slightly and saved her stones in the small bag to pay attention to what Hermione said.
—I took this a few months ago as light reading... —the witch said.
—This is "light"? —Ron ironically asked.
—Here it is: "Nicolas Flamel is the only discoverer of the Philosopher's Stone!" —cried Hermione as she read a line of the book.
—The what? —asked the boys.
—Honestly: don't you guys read? —mocked Cora slightly. Within a few seconds, she herself drew a letter from her inner pocket—. My mother sent me this letter today. It mentions the Philosopher's Stone. —said the redhead—. Listen: "The Philosopher's Stone is a legendary substance with astonishing powers. Transforms any metal into pure gold, and produces the Elixir of Life, which makes the one who ingests it inmortal"...
—Inmortal? —asked Ron.
—That means you never die. —Hermione said.
—I know what it means!
—"The only remaining stone that exists today, is in the possession of the renowned alchemist Nicholas Flamel, who celebrated last year his 665 birthday". —read Cora aloud, finishing the letter which her mother sent to her.
—That's what Fluffy keeps on the third floor! What's under the trapdoor! The Philosopher's Stone! —cried Hermione in a nervous manner.
That same night, the four friends decided to go to Hagrid's hut, hoping to get more information.
—Wait. —Cora said, stopping her friends before they passed the main gates.
—What's the matter, Cora? —asked Hermione.
—You told me to notify you as soon as I created a spell, right? —said the redhead—. We don't need to go through the halls, risking to be caught.
The other three children were almost stunned to see that Cora took out of her bag a green stone and transmitted her power to her own wand.
—Portale.
As Cora pronounced the enchantment, a portal with emerald green edges appeared in front of them, in the center of this distinguishing far away Hagrid's hut.
—You can pass trough it, it's safe.
—If you say so, Cora... —Ron said somehow scared and suspicious.
—Don't be a coward! —Harry scolded him—. Cora has created the spell and she says it's safe, so I trust her. She's our friend. —commented the child before crossing the portal. Hermione, Ron and Cora followed him within a few seconds.
Once they had gone through, they began to walk towards Hagrid's house. They did not have to walk too much through the muddy and rocky road that led to the cabin, but as it was a slightly cold night, the students of the Gryffindor house were sheltered with their robes and scarves. With some patience, Harry and Hermione knocked on the door.
—Hagrid...
—Hello... —said Hagrid, interrupting Harry—. I'm so sorry guys, but today I have no body for amusement... —he said before he started closing the door.
—We know about the Philosopher's Stone! —the four children cried out in unison, causing Hagrid to open the door again with a semblance of annoyance.
—Oh... come in. —replied Hagrid In an exasperated tone, letting them enter his house.
—We think Snape wants to steal it. —Cora commented as she and her friends stripped off the robes and scarves.
—Snape... —mused Hagrid something annoying—. Oh, jeez! You will not giving it a whirl, do you?
—We know that he wants to steal the stone, but we don't know why. —said Harry as he sat in one of the armchairs of the place.
—Snape is one of the professors who protects the stone, he has no intention of stealing it. —said Hagrid facing the Young magician.
—What?
—What you heard. —said Hagrid—. And now leave me alone, I'm a little busy.
—Wait a moment... —said Harry —. One of the professors?
—That's right, there are more things defending the stone, right Hagrid? —said Cora as she cracked her fingers—. Spells, enchantments,...
Exactly. —said Hagrid—. A waste of time in my opinion. No one who can mock Fluffy: there is no soul who knows how, except me and Dumbledore. —he commented with a slight tone of pride—. I shouldn't have said that, I shouldn't have said that... —he yelled himself.
At that very moment, inside the cauldron that Hagrid had in the warm fire of the fireplace, a few slight blows were heard, to which the burly man took something from that place. After taking in his hands the object that was in the cauldron, which was boiling, Hagrid placed it on his table. While Hagrid did that, the four children placed themselves around the table to be able to see better what was there: a big black egg.
—Um, Hagrid... can you tell me what that is? —asked Harry.
—W-well, that's... um... that's...
—I know what it is! —cried Ron with a smile on his face—. But Hagrid... how did you got it?
—I won it. A stranger I met at the Pub. —said Hagrid—. And he was overjoyed to get rid of him, in fact... —he added somehow suspicious.
At that moment, strange noises and slight blows began to be heard from the black egg. Within a few seconds, the shell opened, and from its inside emerged a little dragon.
—Is that... a dragon? —asked Hermione, astonished.
—But not any dragon: He is a Norwegian ridgeback. —said Ron—. My brother Charlie works with them in Romania.
—Isn't it a beauty? —asked Hagrid in a soft voice—. Look, he recognizes his mommy. —he added with a smile—. Hi Norbert! —he remarked as he cherished it.
—Norbert? —Cora asked somehow astonished about the choice of name.
—Sure, it's got to have a name, right?
After Hagrid's answer, Gryffindor's children smiled, since the man was a softie-hearted person. While Hagrid caressed Norbert, the little dragon that had just been born sneezed, causing that from his mouth to come out flames that burned part of Hagrid's beard.
—Well... there's still some practice missing. —Hagrid said in laughter before he looked out of his window—. Who's that?
—Malfoy... —replied Cora with an icy tone, as she watched him run in the direction of the castle.
—Oh, God... —mumbled Hagrid.
Something in Malfoy's mocking smile during the next week made Harry, Cora, Ron, and Hermione nervous. They spent most of their free time in Hagrid's dark hut, trying to get him to reason.
—Let him go —urged him Cora—. Release him.
—I can't... —said Hagrid—. It's too small. He'll die.
The children looked at the dragon. It had trebled its size in just a week. Smoke was coming out of his face. Hagrid did not fulfill his forest ranger duties because the dragon occupied all his time.
—He has lost his mind. —Hermione muttered to Cora.
—Hagrid —said Harry in a very loud voice—, wait two weeks and Norbert will be as big as your home. Malfoy will tell Dumbledore at any moment.
Hagrid bit his lip.
—I know I can't stay with him forever, but I can't throw him out, I can't.
Harry turned to Ron suddenly.
—Charlie. —he said.
—You have also lost your mind. —Ron said—. I'm Ron, remember?
—No... Charlie, your brother. In Romania. Studying dragons. We can sent him Norbert. Charlie will take care of him and then let him live in freedom!
—That's great! —said Ron—. What do you think of that, Hagrid?
And in the end, Hagrid agreed to send Norbert to Charlie.
That same night, the four friends returned from Hagrid's hut, when a few steps made them stop in the dry: down the main dark halley, they saw Professor McGonagall, with a scottish cloth robe and a snood in her hair. She had Malfoy grabbed by the ear.
—Twenty points less for Slytherin! Wandering in the middle of the night... How dare you...?
—You don't understand, professor, Harry Potter will come. And Hagrid has a dragon!
—How absurd nonsense! How dare you say those lies? Come on, I'll talk about you with Professor Snape... come on, Malfoy!
Harry cursed quietly, since they had not taken the invisibility cloak, and Cora's Portale spell could only be used on a few occasions, until she managed to perfect it. The four Gryffindor children hid the best they could between the shadows, but unfortunately for them, they were soon discovered.
—Good night... —said the teacher with a severe tone of voice while she observed the four friends. She released Malfoy, who watched them with a triumphant smile on his face.
—I told you so, Professor McGonagall. —he murmured.
—Everyone, come with me. —she said, as she made the five children enter into one of the empty classrooms.
They spent a few minutes in silence, until the teacher decided to speak.
—Nothing, I repeat, nothing, authorizes a pupil to wander through the school during the night. —she lectured the Gryffindor students—. Therefore, as punishment, you will be deducted fifty points.
—Fifty! —cried Harry.
—To each one. —stressed the teacher, making the Gryffindor children look at her disappointed—. And to make sure it doesn't happen again, the five of you will be held.
At that moment, the triumphant smile that Malfoy had on his face was suddenly obliterated.
—Sorry professor, I may be mistaken, but I think I heard "the five"...
—No, you've heard right, Mr. Malfoy. As honorable as your intentions were, you were all up at mistime. Therefore you will join your already-detained companions.
I hope you liked this chapter! I tried my best to make it as better as I could! By the way, above you can see Cora's Green stone, which contains the Portale spell! If you want more information about the spell or simply want to leave your thoughts, don't hesitate and comment!
