Chapter 5: Final Sorting & Halloween
The month of October was approaching unexpectedly in that year of Hogwarts. The students were quite excited by the party that should be held in that month: Halloween. But it was not yet the long awaited day, because they were still at the end of September. At meal time, the Gryffindor table seemed to be pretty busy with the arrival of the mail, and Harry noticed something strange.
-Guys, someone has entered Gringotts. -Harry commented while he observed Ron and Hermione-. Listen: <<Investigations continue into the break-in at on , widely believed to be the work of unknown. Gringotts today insisted that nothing had been taken. The vault that was searched had in fact been emptied the same day>>. -the child read with interest and a note of mystery-. That's strange... That's the camera I entered with Hagrid...
The three Gryffindors looked seriously at each other, since they didn't believe that it had been a mere coincidence. Hermione saw trough the corner of the eye, Cora going towards the Slytherin table and sighed.
-I don't know how Cora can endure being in Slytherin, and more being Malfoy with her almost at any time... -Hermione muttered between teeth.
-It's true. I can only hope that the next month she'll be in our house or in Ravenclaw... -Harry said.
-That reminds me... today we have our first class of flight... But we will be with Slytherin. -mentioned Ron slightly angry-. Why with Slytherin? I already had enough with having to share the potions class with them...
The other two nodded, since they had found out that morning that they were going to have another class with the pupils of the house of the snake.
-But at least Cora will be with us. -said Harry slightly satisfied.
-Harry, it seems to me that you are very interested in Cora... -mentioned Ron with intent.
-Wh-what!? Don't say nonesense! -exclaimed Harry-. I just want to be her friend... And with luck, to make her move away from Malfoy.
-Sure, sure... -said Hermione with a smile.
That same afternoon, at three o'clock, Harry and the other Gryffindor students went running down the stairs to get to the park, where their first class of flight would take place. The meadow to which they were heading was located in an opposite way to the forbidden forest, whose trees waved with a dark air. When Harry and the others arrived, the Slytherin students were already there, as well as twenty brooms lined up on the ground.
-Good afternoon students. -said the profesor of gray hair and yellow eyes, while she walked among them.
-Good afternoon Madam Hooch. -the students said.
-Welcome to flight class! -Professor Hooch exclaimed with a smile-. Well, what are you waiting for? -she said-. Everyone on the left side of your broom. Come on, quickly.
The students did what Professor Hooch had commanded them, and placed themselves to the left of their respective broom.
-Extend your hand on the broom -told them the professor- and say <up>.
-UP! -everyone exclaimed.
Almost in an immediate way, Harry's and Cora's brooms rose quickly towards their hands. The two children looked at each other and smiled with happiness (to envy of Malfoy, who watched them).
-Up. -said Malfoy with certain air of superiority, as if he already mastered completely his broom. This one rose as fast as that of Harry and Cora.
-Very well, Draco! -exclaimed the crimson eyed girl.
Once all students had managed to held their brooms, Professor Hooch proceeded to give further instructions.
-Now, once you've got a hold of your broom, I want you to mount it. -she instructed as she observed some students-. Grip it tight. You don't want to be sliding off the end. -she said as she saw how students mounted on the brooms-. When I blow my whistle, I want each of you to kick off from the ground hard. Keep your brooms steady, hover for a moment, then lean forward slightly and touch back down. -she said with a serene voice tone.
"It seems rather easy... I hope I won't fall from my broom on my first day", thought Cora slightly worried.
-On my whistle -said Professor Hooch-: three, two... -before she said "one" she already had blown her whistle.
As soon as she did so, Neville Longbottom began to rise immediately, as if he couldn't control his broom. The broom began to fly in an uncontrolled way, making Neville to turn in vertical and horizontal, and at the same time, hitting against the facade of the castle. After flying back a few times more (almost rolling to the other students and Professor Hooch), the broom raised on an uncontrolled way above a statue that was carrying two sharp swords, which hooked up Neville's sweater. The sweater began to yield, when it broke, Neville was dropped from a considerable height.
-Everyone out of the way! - the professor exclaimed while she approached poor Neville, now lying on the ground-. Oh dear, it's a broken wrist...
The professor (after helping Neville to raise from the ground) turned towards the rest of the class.
-Everyone's to keep their feet firmly on the ground while I take Mr. Longbottom to the hospital wing. -Professor Hooch threatened with a serious voice-. If I see a single broom in the air, the one riding it will find themselves out of Hogwarts before they can say quidditch. -she added, before leaving from there along with Neville.
As soon as he had lost sight of them, Malfoy was already laughing out laud.
-Have you seen the face of that big chump?
Other Slytherin students (except Cora) laughed with him.
-Stop it Draco! -exclaimed Cora with a cutting tone.
-Look. - said Draco, ignoring on a superficial way Cora's exclamation-. It's the stupid remembrall that his grandmother sent to Longbottom...
-Give it here, Malfoy. -said Harry calmly. Everyone stopped speaking to watch them.
Malfoy smiled with malice.
-No. I think I'll leave it somewhere for Longbottom to find. -he answered while he rised to his broom, moving away from the multitude-. How about on the roof? -he asked with a smile-. What's the matter, Potter? Bit beyond your reach?
Harry frowned and proceeded to mount his broom.
-Harry, be careful. Malfoy knows flying quite well. -told him Cora told with a bit of fear.
Harry jumped on his broom and flew up to Malfoy.
-Give it here Malfoy, or I'll knock you off your broom! -treathened Harry.
-Is that so? -he asked on an amused way. Harry tried to reach for the remembrall, but Malfoy, having far more experience at flying, could easily dodge him-. Have it your way then. -he exclaimed, trowing it far away.
Harry accelerated and managed to catch it before it collided with one of the windows of Hogwarts, where Professor McGonagall was reading some papers. This one saw how Harry caught the remembrall, and was surprised by his speed and ability. Harry fell to the ground among the cheers of his fellow companions. Cora ran up to him and embraced him with a smile.
-Don't worry, I'll give it to Neville. -the girl assured him while she took the remembrall.
Minutes later, Professor McGonagall appeared in the meadow and took Harry. Harry was thinking that they would expel him, but instead, Professor McGonagall turned him into the Gryffindor seeker for the quidditch matches.
Cora's POV
Poor Neville, he didn't deserve that it happenned this to him on his first day of flight. I wonder if he's fine... I'll give him back the remembrall. I'm sure he misses it.
When I saw Harry dissapear with Professor McGonagall I turned inmediately without paying attention to the cries of Draco, who called me. I left the broom and went to the hospital wing, where Neville was being attended by Madam Pomfrey.
-Hello, I've come to see Neville.-I told Madam Pomfrey, who dedicated a smile to me and let me approach to the bed in which laid the Gryffindor student.
-You... You're... -said Neville somewhat frightened. He seemed afraid from me by seeing me in the company of the Slytherin students, and that gave me pity, because I know some students who're not so threatening.
-Don't worry Neville. -I told him with a smile-. I've come to give you this. -I informed him, while I took out the remembrall from my pocket.
-Thank you... I thought I had lost it... -he said on a low voice.
-It's nothing. -I answered him-. Now I'll leave, I must go to class. Farewell Neville. -I said goodbye with a smile, leading myself to my following class. By the way I met Professor Dumbledore, who motioned me to follow him. I sighed but I followed the director without protesting, since I knew for sure that he would like discuss something important with me. When we arrived at his office, he made me sit down in a chair, and after a few seconds of waiting, Professor McGonagall (who was still accompanied by Harry) and Professor Snape entered the room.
-I will leave Potter waiting outside... -Professor McGonagall said.
-Don't worry Minerva. This also relates to Harry. He can stay. -interceded Dumbledore.
I looked at Harry and saw that he seemed happy, as if something had happened. I decided that I would later ask him about it, and I returned my gaze to Dumbledore.
-Whay I have been brought here, Professor Dumbledore?-asked on a confused way.
-Because you are going to be sorted for a house, Cora. -he answered me.
-B-but... I still haven't gone to any of the other houses!-I exclaimed rather nervous.
-Do no worry, dear. The Sorting Hat already knows where you belong.
After receiving that answer by him, I noticed how Professor McGonagall placed the hat on my head.
-Mm... Good, good... I see your mind more clearly... -said the powerful voice of the hat- . You'll be on... Gryffindor!-he exclaimed, leaving me in shock for a few moments.
-Am I... in Gryffindor?-I asked incredulous.
-Yes you are. -said Professor McGonagall-. Now dear, if you excuse me... -she added, as she launched a spell to make me forget the password to the Slytherin common room.
-Welcome Cora! -Harry exclaimed with a smile, giving me a hug.
-Thanks Harry! -I cried happy while I reciprocated the hug. At that time I noticed that my hood fell from my head. That let me clear one thing: Harry, Ron and Hermione were my real friends. Although that didn't avoid that I felt sorry for having failed to be a best friend to Draco...
When I stopped hugging Harry, I noticed that both Professor Dumbledore and Professor Snape looked at me stunned. I knew that my hair was long and red, but I didn't understand what caused them so much fascination...
-It will be better Harry, if you lead your new companion to her new house. -Dumbledore said with a smile.
Harry and I said our goodbyes to the professors and proceeded to walk towards the Gryffindor common room. By the way, Harry told me that he was the new seeker of Gryffindor, which made me happy. While we talked, we met Ron and Hermione, who came to us with two big smiles on their faces.
-Dumbledore has already announced it officially. -Ron said.
-Welcome! I'm glad that finally you are in our house! -said Hermione giving me a warm hug.
-Thank you! -I exclaimed happily.
3rd person POV
The four children walked through the corridors, meeting with Malfoy and his teammates after some minutes.
-I see that even without the hood you're still ugly... -said Pansy.
-Shut up Parkinson. -ordered Malfoy with a sharp tone.
-Draco, I... -began to tell the red-haired girl.
-I hope that you have a nice time with your new friends, Avery. -said Malfoy with a hurt and angry tone at the same time-. And just so you know it: our friendship is over.
-Leave her alone Malfoy. -said Harry with a serious voice.
-Shut up Potter, I wasn't speaking with you. -said Malfoy with hate and rancor.
-Come on, let's go. -said Ron leading his friends out there, with the purpose of evading any further fights.
When they reached the stairs, they began to climb them. While they were in one of them, it began to move.
-What's happening?-asked Ron somewhat scared.
-The stairs change to their own pleasure, remember Ron?-said Cora with a slight smile, although she still felt sad by the words of Draco.
-Let's go there. -said Harry once the stairs had stopped moving.
-Yes, before they change again... -Ron said.
The four children went to the floor to which the stairs had led them, going through a heavy door.
-Does anyone else feel that we shouldn't be here?-asked Ron.
-That's becauseIs we shouldn't be here. -sentenced Hermione.
-This is the third floor-added Cora-. It's forbidden.
At that time, one of the pedestals with torches lit, illuminating the place. Soon they could hear a cat's meow, which made them turn around and find of face to face with Mrs. Norris, the cat from Filch.
-Filch's cat!-exclaimed Hermione.
-Run!-exclaimed Harry.
The four Gryffindor students began to run as fast as their legs enabled them, because they wanted to get away as much as possible from Filch and his cat. They ran and ran down the long hallway until they came to a door. It was the end of the way.
-Closed! -exclaimed Harry somewhat frustrated.
-It's over, we've been caught... - said awestruck Ron.
-Let me... -commented Cora pulling out her wand. Then gently hit the lock, and whispered-: Alohomora!
The door opened without effort, and the Gryffindor students entered quickly, closing it behind them.
-Alohomora? -asked Ron.
-Regulatory book of spells. Chapter seven. -Hermione said with a smile, as she had also read that book.
After waiting a few minutes, in which listened to Filch wander from one side to another, finally stay fell silent.
-He has already gone.-said Hermione after listening quietly.
-He does sure believe that the door is closed... -commented Ron.
-It was closed. -added Hermione.
-And for a good reason! -exclaimed Cora looking behind her with fear.
The other three children looked behind their heads and saw a giant black dog which had three heads.
-Is a Cerberus -wishpered Cora rather amazed.
-What is a Cerberus?-asked Ron.
-According to Greek mythology, Cerberus was the dog of Hades, the God of the underworld. This dog was in charge that the dead could not exit underworld, and that at the same time, the living could not enter. -explained Cora between whispers.
The giant three-headed dog awoke after some seconds and scared the children, who cried and left the room in pure terror.
The child ran up to the Gryffindor common room, where they stopped to recover breath.
-What they intend having a beast locked up in school? -asked Ron.
-You don't use your eyes, right?-said Hermione angry-. Haven't you seen what he had under his feet?
-I wasn't looking to his feet! -exclaimed Ron-. I was more worried about his head! In case you haven't noticed... it had three!
-He was above a trap door, so it's not there by chance. -commented Cora with a calmer voice-. It's keeping something. -she added, as they climbed the stairs that leaded to the bedrooms.
-Keeping something? -asked Harry.
-That's right. -said Hermione-. Now, Cora and I are going to bed until another brilliant idea occurs to either the two of you and we end up dead. Or worse: expelled. -added the girl before taking Cora's hand and leaving with her, since they shared the same room.
-She needs to put in order her priorities... -said Ron, rather bored by Hermione's know-it-all attitude.
Some days passed, the expected 31th of October arriving: the day of Halloween. That day, in the early hours, the students had charms class with Professor Flitwick. The teacher placed them in pairs, being Cora's partner, to her dismay, Draco Malfoy. Malfoy and she had stopped talking from the day in which the redhead was sorted for Gryffindor, and despite the fact that Cora had tried to chat with him, Malfoy treated her just as bad as Harry. For his part, Hermione didn't speak with Harry and Ron, as she was still upset by what happened with the dog.
-One of the wizards most rudimentary skills is levitation, or the ability to make objects fly. -said Professor Flitwick, interrupting Cora's thoughts-. Do you have your feathers? Good. Now, don't forget the nice wrist movement we've been practising. -he said in a lively voice. Swish and flick. Everyone.
-Swich and flick. -every student said.
-Good! Oh, and enunciate: Wingardium Leviosa.
All students began to practice immediately, but none of the feathers rose a millimeter.
"Let's see... the movement of the wrist and the pronunciation of the spell have to be taken into account," thought Cora as she watched her companions.
-Wingardium Leviosá! -Ron exclaimed as he ruffled his wand.
-Stop, stop, stop. You're going to take someone's eye. -said Hermione, stopping Ron-. Besides, you're saying it wrong: it's Leviosa, not Leviosá.
-You do it then if you're so clever. C'mon. -answered Ron slightly annoyed by the girl.
-Wingardium Leviosa. -said Cora at the same time as Hermione did, both their feathers rising in the air about one meter above their heads.
-Oh, well done! -Professor Flitwick exclaimed-. See here everyone: Miss Avery and Miss Granger have done it!
At the end of the class, all the students went out of the classroom and made their way to the next one.
-Avery. -said Malfoy approaching her-. Well done... in charms class.
-Thank you. -said Cora, somewhat puzzled that he spoke to her-. If you excuse me Malfoy, I'll go with my friends. As you said, our friendship is over. -she stated before she approached Harry and Ron.
-It's a nightmare! -Ron said-. Hermione is a pest. No wonder why she doesn't have friends...
At that moment someone collided with Ron. It was Hermione. Harry and Cora observed that she was crying.
-Hermione! -exclaimed the redhead going in her search.
-I think that she has heard you... -said Harry.
The three friends did not see Hermione in any of the classes or in the afternoon. When they went to the Great Hall to celebrate the Halloween party, Cora told them that Hermione had locked herself in the girl's bathroom throughout the day, and that she refused to leave. After sitting at the table, the juicy delicacies of Halloween appeared in their dishes.
- Troll! In the dungeons! There's a troll in the dungeons! -Professor Quirrell cried while he ran trough the center of the Great Hall-. For you all to know... -he said before falling to the ground unconscious.
All students began to scream and panic.
-SILENCE! -exclaimed Dumbledore to rise from his seat-. Do not let the panic take control over you. Now, prefects will accompany you to your bedrooms. Teachers will accompany me to the dungeons.
Everyone began to evacuate the place in relative calm.
-How has been able a troll to enter? -asked Harry.
-Trolls do not come alone, they are idiots. -said Ron.
-Wait! Hermione! -exclaimed Cora-. She doesn't know it! -the red-haired girl added before running towards the girls bathroom, followed closely by Harry and Ron.
