Now fast forward about six years. By now, I'm assuming you've realized that I'm the baby. I'm a blind princess trying to make my way in the world. That wasn't important. Back to the story.

Six years (give or take a few months) after I was born, my mother got really sick. She started coughing up blood, and she got dizzy whenever she stood. The doctors couldn't do anything to help her, so they just gave herbs like capsaicin, ginger, and feverfew. I was playing in the nursery when father pulled me out of the room and dragged me to mother's chambers. He sat me down in a chair next to her bed and he left the room. Mother was sweating and pale. She was paler than I was, and I didn't think that was possible.

"Echo?" my mother whispered.

"Yes, mother?" I answered.

"Is it just you with me?" she said weakly.

"Yes, mother" I responded.

Mother pointed weakly to her bedside table, "In there... My crown....bring it to me" I did what I was told. I carefully went to the table and searched for the drawer handle. When I found it I opened the drawer. The crown was the only thing in there. It was made of silver and had many gemstones forged into the surface. I took it, closed the drawer, and slowly handed it to my mother. Something happened when I put it in her hands. The crown seemed to melt. The liquid-or what I assumed to be liquid- looked as if it had fallen through her fingers and landed on her red blanket. It started to form a different shape, I couldn't see it though (obviously), so it was just a blob of silver. Mother didn't seem concerned that a crown had melted in her hands, but I was freaking out.

"Mother! What just happened?" I exclaimed.

"It changed form...." She replied.

"What?"

"It changed form. This crown is a relic, my darling. The Shifting Silver, some call it. I was given it when I became Queen." She motioned for me to come closer. I leaned towards her.

"Bow, darling" she whispered, so I did. Mother put the relic on my head like a headband. I reached up to touch it and felt a cold metal.

"You're giving it to me?" I said, confused. I could see movement, so I assumed she nodded.

"Darling, my baby girl, I must leave this world now...I can't last much longer" my mother's voice sounded weak.

"Leave? What do you mean?" And since I was a six year old at this point in time, I didn't know that my mother was dying.

"Oh my baby girl....I'll miss you....I'll watch you from my place in heaven," Mother closed her eyes, I couldn't see their colors anymore.

"From heaven? Mother, what do you mean?" I cocked my head.

She didn't respond.

"Mother?"

She didn't respond.

"Mother?" my six-year-old mind had begun to understand, "Mother? Mother please I need you!" I felt tears fall down my cheek. There was nothing I could do. I shook her, trying to wake her up. It didn't work. I didn't want this... Why did this happen...I heard the door open.

"Echo...It's time to go," I heard Father say. I stayed where I was.

"Echo...Please," He whispered. I didn't move.

I heard movement and felt his hand on my shoulder, and he leaned down. I could feel his hair on my neck.

"I know you're upset...I am. I loved your mother...I will always love your mother...but we need to go. If we stay bad things could happen," I hesitated but nodded. Father lifted me out of the chair and pulled me out of the room.
